Loved the blue dragon - it was the only thing that saved the show. |

Well, I saw it with my two sons, both of whom are dragon fans and one of whom is a fan of the book.. so I guess I saw it through their eyes, and we loved it, found it very magical.
I really do have to suspend my adult consciousness when I share stuff with them. I hear from an adult angle it was considered over influenced by LOTR.. but apart from some aerial p*rn of rural NZ, I'm not so sure about that.
What did you think Tam? |

I've only read the books, and really found them...erhm... bad. I know they are not really for adults, but the languange is poor. The plot could have been good, but is totally ruined by pompous descriptions, too many details and before mentioned language. And yes, the books are clearly too influenced by LOTR! |

I can symapthise with LOTR fans. So disapointing that there are only 3 books.
Same for us Jane Austen fans, we have only 6.
In both cases there are zillions of 'would be' / copycats, meeting the need of hungry readers. |

I still haven't seen the movie! I did read the books because they are some of my son's favorites.
We discussed the LOTR influence but I really liked the story. When I first saw the ads on TV I was sure that I was going to go and see it but never did. Now it's on the top of my "must rent" list. |

The author was a home schooled 17 year year old when he wrote Eragon, so it might explain some of the inadequacies.
catski : There are more than 3 LOTR, The Histories of Middle earth, The Silmarillrion, and The Hobbit of course... Tolkien fans have quite a bit to read, lol.
eta : I love dragons, but the movie was a little cheesy for me, when Eragon wore some lame thing in the last battle, instead of chain mail. |

That's great to know about the author of Eragon! Wow, I must tell my son that.
My son is 12, so the Hobbit was 'old' for him by the time he ws 9, and the others you mention are so dry that they leave him cold, as they do most but the True Tolkien Geeks. lol. |
