I was born blonde but started going brown when I was about 14, and I've been bleaching it ever since. But today, for some reason, 2 days before my 31st birthday, I decided to go back to my "natural" shade - light brown with some caramel highlights. I don't look like me. I literally don't recognize myself when I look in the mirror. My SO hasn't seen it yet and I'm really nervous. I don't like it right now but I'm assuming like a radically new haircut it will take time to get used to. I mean, it looks good, my hairdresser did a great job. I'm thinking I will need new make-up. I feel kind of relieved - I won't have to worry about roots now!

Has anyone else totally changed your hair color? How did you like it? Did you keep it?

I bore eaily so I change my colour quite often. Or at least I used to. I've been every shade but black. Like you I was born with blonde to dark blonde hair but it became darker as I got older. The past decade I've been dying it different shades of blonde and back to brown then back to blonde and even some red an auburn in between. I got tired of all the maintenance last year and really wanted to grow my hair long so went back to my natural golden brown. I have to say I am really embracing my natural colour now and I really quite like it. Plus it's easier to maitain, no highlights every month or so, no roots, no bleach damage. I'm sure it's a shock to you know but it'll grow on you.

I went from blonde to my light brownish colour about a year ago. I love it, no more worrying about roots growing in, no more money be wasted at the hairdressers (I was paying 150+ for my streaks). I will probably go this spring and get a few red highlights but they will be only 2 shades off from my natural colour to keep the maintenance low.

My boyfriend liked it when i made the change...hope yours does too!

Bunny--- would you mind posting a pic? I'd love to see! I'm sure you look beautiful! Actually, my natural color is dark brown, but right now it's lightened to a medium golden brown. However, I'm sick of dealing with roots etc and I want to go back to my normal color, so I'm very interested in how you went about doing it. How did you and your colorist go about doing it? How did you make sure that it would dye the blond part the right color but not darken the roots too much? TIA!

Your natural hair color sounds really pretty. I'm sure that it will grow on you. Smile And going with your natural color makes maintenance so easy.

You may find that you need to experiment with new shades of makeup to complement your new color -- have fun! Very Happy

I'm sure you look great with your natural hair color. I've found that my natural hair color is the one that actually looks the best on me. Surprising I know. It is hard to embrace it when you are a teenager but when your older you recognize the beauty that your natural hair color actually shows in your skin and eyes unlike most dye jobs. So I am sure your SO will love it.

I've had a ton of different hair colours too. It started about Grade 9 in school when I dyed it blonde (my natural is a medium brown ... BLAH mousey brown I should say) from a drug store colour. Well, let's just say it was more orange blonde. Laughing Then I went into the highlighting with the cap, but I would end up pulling so much hair through it basically looked like it was all bleached light light blonde. Surprisingly enough I liked it and kept it that way for quite some time. I kept it blonde for many years (moving to salon colours which REALLY helped it look naturally blonde and not orange or bleached white). Then I went into my red stage for many, many years and had everything from light red/strawberry blonde to medium to darker reds. And now, these past 6 months or so I have dyed it dark brown with burgundy so it's alittle reddish, but only in the sun and LOVE IT! I never though I'd be happy with just brown hair, but it's awesome. And it's closer to my natural colour so my roots don't look as obvious AND I can let it go slightly longer between colours.

It IS always weird to all of a sudden have something totally different. You DO have to look twice at yourself in the mirror because it just doesn't feel like yourself. BUT ... I think going back to your natural will grow on you in time and you'll love it! And if not, well ... that's what's fun about colouring your hair ... you can always try something else. And sometimes it does need new makeup ... maybe something a little darker than what you would have used as a blonde. Have fun and play around!

I did the same thing. The 1st few days difficult. But - I think you may find that you're really going to like the look. I got more compliments on my hair after I brought it back to my light brown color. It just takes some time to get used to. Hang in there!

my natural hair color is dark dark brown. I've been dying my hair with streaks of blonde for quite some time now. I have a hair appt. next week and am seriously thinking about dying my hair back to it's natural color (but am very scared since i havent seen my natural hair color in a long time)

Bunny I'm sure your brown color looks good on you. If you have fair skin and have a dark hair color, your fair skin will look more fair as opposed to having blonde hair.

I'm naturally a dark golden blonde too, and I've always wanted to be a brunette. I've dyed mine a few times, but I always end up blonde again because my hair won't hold the color. I really love the way it looks dark, but I never can seem to get used to it. Let us know how it goes! I bet it looks gorgeous!

Your hair sounds lovely, I hope you do get used to it. My hair is naturally a medium-dark goldeny brown, but I've had it just about every colour of the rainbow in the past. Sometimes it worked well, others not so much - I am definitely not meant to be a blonde though. Now that I am colouring it to cover greys rather than for fun, I tend to go for semi-permanent rinses close to my natural colour to make it easier Laughing .

I'm sure you look really lovely - it'll take a while to get used to but then you won't want to change.

Bunny I am sure it looks great! I did the same myself this year and found it very freeing although it did take my SO some time to get used to it. For the longest while he kept saying he felt like he was with another woman... Laughing There were a few days of tears on my part adjusting and I had to change my makeup etc. but now I can't imagine going back.

Bunny7475 have your got use to your hair now?

I did exactly the same thing as you in October, was born blonde started going darker and then started colouring my hair blonde from about the age of 15. I was tired of continually touching up my roots and seeing as brunette is the new black (if you see what I mean) I coloured my hair to brunette a few months ago. At first I hated it, thought it was too dark and no-one recognised me BUT now it's lightened a bit and my roots which are now about 2" in length don't look obvious. I do like my natural colour better than the dyed brunette colour so I will be staying with this colour and hoping that it will lighten a bit in the Summer. Smile

Thank you all so much for your replies. I had forgotten about it when I woke up this morning and got a surprise all over again when I looked in the mirror!

SO said he really liked it. He sounded sincere, not like he was just saying that so I didn't burst into tears. Laughing

manslayerliz, my roots had grown out a lot and my color was really faded, so my hairdresser was able to see exactly what my natural color was and match it almost perfectly. She put that color all over, washed it out, then did full-head highlights in caramel, so they won't really be noticeable when they grown out.

Well, I'm off to look at make-up. No more pale, light shades for me! Thanks everybody!

Nice replies everyone.

Same story as Bunny, except that my natural color, which is (charitably) called Dark Blonde, is really Dirty-dishwater Mousy/Ashy kinda-light Brown. Ugh! Absolutely no color, yet it's not grey or white or black.

I was doing the highlighting thing for the best part of 20 years, with occassional forays to near-platinum or warm blonde. About two years ago I was sick of being noticed for the color of my hair rather than the content of my head so I went for a Devil's Food Cake brunette. Love it, love it, love it! (Now, about those pesky blonde eyebrows ... Very Happy)

What I really like about my newfound shade is that I can wear certain colors of green and brown and red that I couldn't get away with before. The dark hair makes my face seem even paler than I already am so I can wear bright red lipstick now without looking like a hooker. (I'm serious!) What's really nice is that I can also now wear some bright colors, such as yellow-orange, fire-engine red and aqua. Fun!
