First of all, please allow me to thank you. After wearing only eyeliner and chapstick for my entire adult life, I noticed signs of aging 6 months ago and panicked. I have been voraciously reading these forums since, and have enjoyed the many ideas, tips, humor, and comraderie offered. Smile

I have also been overwhelmed by all the suggested products! About a month ago, I purchased "The Skin Type Solution," a book written by dermatologist and professor of cosmetic dermatology, Leslie Baumann MD. Using a questionnaire, she allows the reader to categorize their skin type into 1 of 16 types -- not just oily, dry, normal, or combo (and not just sensitive or non). She then offers recommended skin care routines for each type: a regimen with suggested products in many price ranges, etc. I have started to incorporate some of her suggestions (with a few substitutions such as Candessence C+E+Ferulic in place of Skinceuticals -- thanks to this site Wink ), and I'm pleased to say have started to notice improvements in my skin tone.

While I'm sure her program will not be the perfect solution for 100% who try it, it seemed to me to be a very scientific approach to try and match many different products to the people most likely to benefit from them. I bought mine from Barnes & Noble, but Amazon-dot-com also sells it and has over 50 reviews (4.5 of 5 stars overall). I hope it helps some of you, so that I am giving a little bit back for some of the benefit you've given me. Thanks again!

LilLoco congratulations on your first post! Smile

I have this book and would also recommend it. While I don't follow her product recommendations exactly I have found the advice on what to use and what to avoid helpful. I have also made a little list of comedogenic ingredients and irritating ingredients and used her book as one of my sources for this.

Here is an example of how her advice for my skin type was spot on:
Even after I read her book I was convinced that someone with my skintype could use exfoliants like AHAs and continued to experiment with them. After much trial and error I finally concluded that Dr. Baumann was right all along and have decided to not use AHAs on a regular basis (I am still undecided about very infrequent peels). I suppose if I had listened to her advice I would have been better off but unfortunatly sometimes I insist on learning the hard way! Shock

Hmmm...sounds like an interesting and useful book. I was always skeptical about Paula B.'s recommendations.

LilLoco, can you describe ur skin type and the recommendation it made for u?
thanks.

TheresaL -- Thank you so much for your welcome to me. Ridiculous how nervous I was to post.

Wild Cat -- I'd be glad to comment more. My whole life, I've considered my skin extremely dry. After taking the questionnaire, nothing earth-shattering there, it confirmed dry (but only "slightly" so I guess I'm also a whiner Neutral ), but then further categorized as sensitive vs resistant, pigmented (ie likely to pigment with sun or scarring) vs non-pigmented, and wrinkled vs tight.

Although borderline on some, my final category: dry, resistant, pigmented, wrinkled. The chapter on my exact type recommended: cleanser, eye cream, anti-aging serum, and sunscreen moisturizer in the AM, and cleanser, exfoliater, eye cream, retinol, and moisturizer in the PM. She also lists several recommended products in a range of prices for each step. I found the regimen coupled with specific recommendations most helpful. And after peeking at recommendations for some of the other skin types, I confirmed that both the regimen and the recommended products differed (in a logical way IMO) for each skin type. HTH!

Thanks LilLoco,
I feel like I am approaching my HG routine for my particular skin type. After years on the forum Shock . Did you read anything that the book recommends that you never heard about on the forum?
Thanks,
Wild Cat

Hi Wild Cat -- No, I'm pretty sure that if I did a search on EDS, someone would have commented somewhere on almost every product listed. Depending on the skin type, her recommendations run the gamut from drugstore brands like Aveeno, Dove, and Nivea to Avon and MaryKay to Elizabeth Arden, Philosophy, Dr. Brandt, LaRoche-Posay, Jan Marini, Creme de la Mer, and on.

The book doesn't rave or rant on a line, it chooses the "best" products of many lines (a cleanser from one or a moisturizer from another) -- "best" being defined as successful for the specific skin type discussed.

Since you've pretty much found what's best for you (I'm a bit envious), I don't think the book would help much. I think it's more for people like me who are overwhelmed by the huge number of products out there (each with supporters and critics), and would like intelligently to narrow the choices down somewhat to have the highest probability of success with the least trial and error time/money spent. So far, I've been pretty pleased by my purchases.

LilLoco, welcome and thank you for your contribution. I have also had the same book recommended to me.

Whatever you decide to buy, please remember that your skin can change from season to season. I would start with the very basics first.

You mentioned that you have been reading a lot of threads. It is up to you which product you want to try out first. Just don't forget Vit. C and sunblock.

Dear shenpei -- I'm probably not able to help much on your question of exfoliation. I read the first three general chapters of the book and then the chapter about my specific skin type. I did glance at a few of the chapters on skintypes similar to mine; for some, she recommended exfoliation and for others not. For me, a schedule of exfoliating up to 4 times a week is appropriate.

I remember Dr. Baumann addressing changes with the seasons in the book, but I don't really remember what she said because my skin (and my Southern California weather) is relatively consistent. Sorry I'm not able to help more! Sad

If her approach appeals to you, may I recommend you skim through the book at your favorite comfortable bookstore before deciding on whether or not to purchase -- that's what I did!
