I am almost 30 and although I have never had sweat problems before I am finding now that my regular deoderant/anti perspirant is not working. I use Soft & Dry for women, and I have also tried arm & hammer. Does anyone have any suggestions?

mmmm ... I don't really use the stuff unless I'm going to be in a really hot and crowded place and then I use a crystal stone that I just wet and rub under my pits.

Maybe that would work?

PS welcome Smile

I too have one of those natural deoderant stones, I also like using Toms of Maine natural deoderant. Here's a past thread about deoderants:

I think Secret Platinum works pretty well; better than most. You could also try a OTC product called dri-sol. It is *super* strong. Basically, you put it on at night, once or twice a week and you won't sweat at all. HTH Smile

i've never heard of those deoderant stones. is it just for preventing odours, or for anti perspirant effects too? is it like a crystal, or one of those salt rock type of things?

i had some good success for preventing sweat for Rexona women's deoderant stick, but when I bought the full size one I found it didn't really do anything for me, except left a dry scratchy feeling for days after.

I don't know if this is available outside the U.S., but the only thing that has saved my son who has overactive sweat glands under his arms and therefore stinks like the devil because all the other deodorants/antiperspirants haven't worked for him other than super pricey prescription products, is Secret Platinum Soft Solid. According to Michael's dermatologist, it's the absolute strongest d/a-p you can buy without a prescription. Of course, "Secret is strong enough for a man, but it's made for a woman," which means I have to buy the unscented formula for Mike and he's sworn me to secrecy not to tell any of his friends that he uses a "ladies" deodorant!!! But seriously, if you can get your hands on this, give it a try. They also have it in invisible solid, and they just came out with a semi-solid version with Olay moisturizers in it. My son doesn't appreciate that one, but I sure do!!

The crystal rocks are for preventing odour but will not stop you from sweating. I am happy to use one in winter when I don't sweat too much but in summer over here I use a normal one unless I'll be spending most of the day in air-con.

Carrie - I've tried Secret before (although not that particular one) and I really liked it. I've seen it available in Europe as well but not in Australia.

Btw, another brand that I find quite effective is Mitchum.

We used to be able to get Secret deodorant in the UK, but they stopped selling it here years ago. Loads of us loved it and were very disappointed.

Just lately, I've been trying a deodorant called Pit Rok - the spray one, although you can also get it in a rock "stick" version". Seems to have been good so far.

There's also a very, very effective one that you use at night only, cutting down to maybe only 3 times a week after a while. It's called Linden Voss Triple Dry. Apparently, there's also a similar one on the market called Driclor that's supposed to be good.

This is the best stuff I have ever used. I was going through a real "stinky phase" and it really worked.

FYI - the Secret Platinum is relatively new (been on the market only 2-3 years) so it’s probably not the same stuff that you guys were able to get in the past. If you thought *that* was good, the Secret Platinum will really knock your socks off!! The excessive sweating (and consequent under-arm rings) doesn’t bother my son much, but before the Secret Platinum, if he ever raised his arms in public, people would keel over and pass out from the smell. Okay, I’m exagerrating, but only slightly! The SP has been a miracle because I used to have to buy new shirts for Michael every month or so because it was all but impossible to remove the ground-in odor after a couple washings, although adding a cup of plain white vinegar to the wash load did help some with that and allowed me to only need to replace his shirts every couple months instead, but the Secret Platinum means that we don’t have to buy him new clothes as often anymore because they had gotten so rank.

So I don’t have to buy two different types/brands, I’ve also been using the Secret Platinum and I love the new version with the moisturizers in it because it really helps keep my armpits softer than they were before as a result of shaving my pits every day....

I definitely recommend Secret Platinum which works very well for me for normal day-to-day use.

However, if I'm going to be in an extremely hot and humid environment I revert to a product called Certain Dri. The product is a bit watery and you roll it on and then let it dry overnight. I'm usually sweat-free for 2-3 days before I need to reapply.

If you decide to try Certain Dri, my only recommendation is that the area to be treated has to be absolutely bone dry or else the ingredients in Certain Dri and water combined causes some slight stinging. hmm

It's available at Walgreens orwww.drugstore.com

HTH

I swear by Mitchum it's the most effective anti perspirant I ever tried...unfortunately its only available in Australia as far as I know.

Then again I havent tried SP so I dont know how the two compare.

It's also available in the US (and they have a bigger range), not sure about anywhere else.

Carekate - I was lucky enough to get hold of some of the Secret Platinum on holiday last year in Newfoundland. Brought home 4 sticks with me in my suitcase! Very Happy

I just can't understand why they stopped selling it over here. We have the same thing with John Frieda's Beach Blonde Ocean Waves - very popular over here, so, naturally, JF decided not to let us have it any more. Mad

After loving and using Mitchem for years I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago and it no longer worked. Tried Certain and Dri-sol but they burned and so switched to Secret Platinum unscented and taking soy supplements. The black cohosh worked but my dr would not let me take it more than 6 months and didn't recommend hrts. The soy and Secret works better than anything I've found.

Glad you found something else that work as well if not better than Mitchum AnnieR...

majorb...that sounds familiar...only thing is I 'd have hoard probably a dozen in my suitcase!

Strange how some brands work not as effectively as others, as most seem to contain the same ingredient ACH...

So many of you are saying that Secret Platinum works well? Anyway, I don't really like their smell...I don't like the smell of baby powder. :-& So have any of you try Lady Speed Stick deodourant? I like their scent but I don't find it quite effective in stopping the sweat. Btw, is there any proper way to apply antiperspirant? I guess you have to shave your armpits first before applying? A thin layer or thick layer? Anyway, thank you for any replies!! Smile

Have you tried the Secret Platinum with the Glacier scent? I love that! To me, it doesn't have the baby powder smell.

FYI - the dermatologist told my son that it’s best to apply anti-persperant/deodorant when your armpits are slightly damp (i.e.: when you get out of the shower, don’t towel your armpits completely dry). The doctor explained the science behind it, which I didn’t really understand, but basically it boils down to the fact that the water helps “trigger” the ingredients in the a-p/d so that it works better. Sort of the opposite principle of where they tell you to apply body oil or moisturizer when your skin is still damp because it helps lock in your skin’s own natural moisture. Anyway, I don’t know if the doctor was right or if he was full of bull, but that’s the way I’ve been applying my Secret Platinum ever since, and I believe that’s what my son does, too....

Oh, and yes, it’s helpful to shave your pits first! Something else the derm told Michael was that hairy armpits help *retain* sweat and odor (I guess because the bacteria that causes the odor has something to actually cling to?), so bare pits would be less of a problem, although my son drew the line at shaving his armpits like a woman!! Wink

Also, Secret Platinum comes in about 10 different scents (at least here in the U.S.), so you're bound to find one of them that you'd be able to tolerate....

I have probably tried ever OTC anti-perspirant that is available (in Canada anyway) Laughing

I have a pretty severe sweating problem even had BOTOX last summer, but this summer I resorted to DriSol and it works well but really itches and causes a rash if you use too much Sad

Next on my list to try is new "Ban Intensly Fresh Formula". Claims to prevent wetness and odour caused by both temperature AND stress....apparently the sweat smells different Confused

Good luck!

There's another American brand that has similar claims about "kicking in in the clutch" (stress and temperature changes) called Degree. My son used that one for quite a few months and it worked well for him, but then suddenly it just stopped working at all. It was like he'd built up a "tolerance" for it so it was no longer effective. I was using the Degree at that time, as well, but I never had any problems with the effectiveness wearing off after a certain period of time, so Degree is another deodorant/anti-persperant that I'd recommend -- although I have to say that I love the Secret Platinum ten times more!!

Actually, Secret Platinum comes in four separate formulas: soft solid (mushy and white -- this is the one my son uses), solid (hard and white), clear soft solid (mushy and clear -- leaves no white residue on clothes!) and a soft solid with Olay moisturizers (mushy and white, but leaves your armpits feeling more like underarms -- i.e.: soft and smooth, this and the clear version are the ones I prefer).

I'd recommend you go with either the plain, hard solid -- even though it's white, it really doesn't leave a residue on your clothes. Or else you should go with the Secret Platinum "Clear Protection" for absolutely no visible residue whatsoever. Fortunately, all of the different formulas are available in all those different scents, so you shouldn't have to choose between using a clear version that smells like baby powder, or using a messy white version that smells like Glacier Mist or whatever other scent that catches your fancy!
