Surprisingly in my search for non-detergent facial cleansers, there are very few that are completely detergent-free. I've got the Mir cleanser on it's way to me, but I'm wondering which detergents are less stripping/harsh than the SLS/SLES?

i use osea's cleansers, which are detergent free. they rely on red algae gel and essential oils, and a couple of other ingredients as well... you can check out their ingredients on www.oseaskin.com.

also, sanoflore/la fleur organique (same thing) makes wonderful sls-free cleansers.

also, living nature has some excellent enzymatic cleansers www.livingnature.nz

and finally, psf, epicuren, and dianne yvonne have very highly rated nondetergent cleansers as well.

desert essence uses tea tree oil--it is very refreshing but can leave skin a little tight. nice humid summer cleanser.

they all use different formulations, but the most important thing is that is it not necessary to have a detergent as an ingredient for a cleanser to do a good job...

avalange, I double checked decyl glucoside and it is considered a surfactant and detergent, and Osea does contain it as an ingredient.

Faith--However, decyl glucoside is extremely mild as a surfactant and i prefer it to the also mild coco betaine.

Kristen

Thanks it seems like the coco betaine one is not agreeable with my skin, for some reason it feels more harsh than SLS

wow, i had no idea!

well, i am not sure that they claim that their cleansers are detergent free. they do a good job of cleansing and removing makeup, and they seem to respect the ph of my skin so nicely (never leave it tight, dry, or irritated), that I just assumed. I actually think they used to NOT have that ingredient in them... I might email them to make sure! In any case, osea cleansers are my HG, but I am pretty sure all the others I recommended are detergent FREE!

but osea doesn't have coco betaine, does it?

thanks again!

Hi avalange,

I didn't see coco betaine in the osea cleanser ingredients.

I personally can't use a cleanser that doesn't have some sort of detergent, my face is just too oily for that. I have heard of other members cleaning their faces with just seakelp bioferment mixed with a carrier oil, but i think i would be abound with pimples if i tried that!

Faith--my cousin bought the 100% purity lavendar seaweed cleanser which contains only coco betaine said that her skin felt so tight after using it. she gave the cleanser to me as a result. so i guess it isn't so mild.

avalange recommends some cleanser which i am sure are excellent. if you pick a cleanser, maybe choose one that is decyl glucoside based or maybe a cleanser with a castille soap base? I haven't tried any castille cleansers before, but Markey over at Garden of Wisdom seems to formulate some awesome cleansers that i will want to try in the future (if i can ever finish all the ones i have that is Laughing ).

I use the Ice Elements Creme Cleanser, which is detergent free:

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Dimethicone, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Squalane, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Stearic Acid, Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract (Antarcticine), Glycerin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinol, Camellia Sinesis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Oil, Polyquaternium-7, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Carbomer, Tetrasodium EDTA, Triethanolamine, Diazolidnyl Urea.

My son uses the gel cleanser for normal to oily skin, which is also detergent free:

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis, Peg-7, Glyceryl Cocoate, TEA-Lauroyl Collagen, Amino Acid, PEG-150, Pentaaerythityl Testrastearate, Acetamide MEA and Lactamide MEA, Polyquaternium-7, Psuedoalteramonis Extract Ferment (Antarcticine), Squalene, Retinol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cucumis Sativis (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurontium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Cymbopogan Schoenathus (Lemongrass) Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Oil, Diazilidnyl Urea, Methylparaben

We also both mix it up with the detergent free Radiance Cleanser:

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis, Coco-Glucoside, Cocobetaine, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Arginine, Lastic Acid, Arginine, Acetamide MEA, Lactamide MEA, Rice Protein, Hyaluronic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinol, Citrus grandis (grapefruit) peel oil, Methylparaben, Diazolidnyl Urea, Polyquaternium-7, Sodium Hydroxide

I know that there are others out there but these are the ones that I am most familiar with.

I have also used Kiss My Face in the past, which I also believe has a detergent free cleanser.

Take care.
Bosoxy.

It's the same consistency as Spectro Jel, but much more effective. Smile I hope that you like it.
