I had my first laser hair removal treatment on Wednesday. I had my bikini and underarms done.
I keep looking for changes to the hair or something -- anything!! Are there any noticeable changes after a laser treatment? |

Tam,
It depends on what type of laser was used on your skin. When I get my laser treatements done, the hair turns a blonde/whitish color and the falls out after about 10 days.
I have tried the cool glide laser as well. With this laser the hair remained its original color but did fall out after about 10 days as well. The hair stays away for about 2 months but then come back finer and greatly reduced.
Did your laser tech say anything as to what to expect? |

The hair will fall out Tam...hopefully, a lot will fall out.
I was told that you can shave...just don't pluck or wax. You can take tape (a lint roller?) and go over the areas to lift any that are not attached to the follicle anymore...I've never done this but was told it was an option.
What kind of laser was it, do you know?
If you're a good candidate...LHR rocks! Freedom! |

Another good way to "lift" the unattached hairs is to use a cleansing cloth- like one of those olay daily facial cloths, or the silk exfoliating brush from Shisedo (although I can't find these anymore since they have been discontinued).

I think that it was a cool glide laser. The laser tech told me that the treated hair would kind of kink up, get darker, and then fall out. So far, none of my hair has gotten kinky or turned darker. Did you see either of those changes? Maybe I just need to be patient and see where I am after 10 days. |

I was told that I was a good candidate. My skin is very light and my hair is dark brown. I hope that it works for me... it's just a little disconcerting to not have anything happen right away.
Did you notice in changes in the hair before it fell out? |

Hey Tam~ the Cool Glide (Yag laser) results are usually in two weeks...when the hairs will fall out. Cool Glide will certainly work with your skin tone...but if you're very light, you might look into finding an Alexandrite type laser - this type of laser is only for light skin. A Yag laser (Cool Glide) works on light and dark skin but it is a lower "power" (not the right term, but the idea) so that dark skins can tolerate it...so effective, yes...but may not be the fastest results a light skin w/ dark hair can get; you are the ideal candidate.
You're gonna love it. |

CyndiK,
I have dark skin and dark hair, I have been getting laser treatments with a laser called "soft touch" (I think). It turns the hair blonde, and then it falls out.
Do you know of a better type of laser for my skin type and hair?
Thanks

I don't know about the Soft Touch machine...but sounds like you'd need a Yag laser - ask your provider, pin them down.
I'm not an expert, but I've had optimal results...when you get the right laser and machine you'll have better results and need less sessions....this significantly lowers the cost. xx, Cyndi
More info here...but I don't necessarily recommend the laser centers listed on their "find a laser center near you" page....

I started with my bikini, then legs, then armpits. I does take multiple treatments to really see a result, but it really was the best money I've spent. No more razors! I get yearly touch ups, but its quick....less than 1 hour for all 3 areas then I'm hair-free for another year!!! |

Definitely a great investment!
I think the key to effective laser hair removal is to make sure the technician uses a high enough setting, and to stick to the recommended treatment schedule...skipping a treatment or two can mess up the effectiveness. |

Ha! I remember when I had my first (and second and third) laser hair removal treatment. I was just like this. Watching desperately for something to happen, and yet nothing ever seemed to. I was convinced I was one of the people it just didn't work for. But of course, it worked just fine.
I never really experienced the hair falling out on schedule, like promised. I got red bumps all over the next day, and eventually those would leave, and these dark, stubby little hairs would remain. And eventually, instead of growing, most disappeared. They obviously must have fallen out. But it wasn't like described - I pictured myself a week later with no hair. It was far more gradual. And by the time they were all done falling out, more had started to grow back again. There was never really a hairless period after those first few appointments. It wasn't until appointment 4 that things really started thinning out and a noticeable difference appeared.
Basically, my point is don't stress over the timelines and descriptions and everything. I see that as a slightly exaggerated version of events. The reality is a lot less exciting, but just as effective. |

You know exactly how I am feeling!!
As long as it works, I don't need to see any spectacular "in-progress" events. But I was beginning to think that the laser wasn't turned high enough for me.
How far apart did you schedule your treatments? |

Make sure you stay out of the tanning beds. On your first treatment, its probably okay to set the laser at a lower setting, they don't know how your skin will react and its better to be safe. In my case, the laser settings went up with each treatment, and the time between treatments got longer...4 weeks, then 5 weeks, etc. |

I had my consultation patch test yesterday and it seemed to go well. I'd been worried about the pain, but it actuall felt better than epilating. Mind you, this was on my leg. I'm sure I'll be screaming like a girl if I get my underarms and bikini line done, as intended.
The area was a little red afterwards, and did feel slightly sunburnt, but there have been no adverse reactions so far. In fact, I've made the appointment for my first treatment in a couple of weeks' time.
Keeping my fingers crossed that this will work for those of us undergoing treatment at the moment. I'll be over the moon if it's successful. |

I never really scheduled mine. The technician said to come back once it looked like most of the hairs had begin to grow back. So when I started looking genuinely "hairy" again, I just called and made an appointment that week. I never really kept track of it. It still worked just fine. |

Tam,
If you don't feel like this treatment worked, go back to the tech. If any hairs haven't fallen out for me, I go back with in 2 weeks and get it done again- for free.
Your tech should be able to do the touch up and not charge you if the hair has not fallen out.

I actually spoke to her today. She told me that there are 6 setting on the machine and she used level 5 (on the high end) on me. It's been a week now, so I'll give it another week and if I still don't see any changes, then I'll go in to see her. |

I had bikini and underarms done, and I actually shaved before my appts (it was summer), but this doesn't affect the outcome, and the laser zeroes in on the hair follicle, and of course, the darker the hair, the easier it is for the laser to target it.
So i didn't notice any hair kinking up, and/or falling out. Mine just didn't grow back after the 3rd-4th time.
I had to have 4 treatments to have it completely gone. It's been a few years now, and i'm still happy! Hourrah for LHR!!
(LHR is also the airport code for London heathrow, how funny.) |

It's been a month since I had my first laser hair removal treatment, so I just wanted to post an update.
I didn't notice any changes in the actual hair. But just around the two week mark, I started to notice that I was losing hair. By the third week, I was absolutely thrilled by the hairless patches that I saw.
I had such remarkable results, I think that I may be hair-free after my fourth or even third (I hope! ) treatment. Maybe that's just wishful thinking, but I am very pleased up to this point.
Today, I had my second treatment. If I get the same kind of results that I saw with my first one, I just may be hairless in only 3 treatments! |

tam - You're one treatment ahead of me, as I had my first on Monday. I already had great results with the patch test - there are very few hairs growing there now.
Please keep updating this thread with your progress and I will too. Perhaps we can cheer each other on! |

Absolutely, Majorb! You are going to love it! I'm already thrilled with the patchiness that I have.
I've set my appointments a month apart; how often are you planning on having it done? And what areas are you doing? |
