Can someone enlighten me as to what this whole thing is about? I guess it was Oprah's topic on Thursday's show. But since I was at work, I have no clue -but I had gotten an email from a distant friend who said to make sure to tune in to Oprah b/c it was all about "The Secret". Supposedly it is the key to happiness, wealth, longetivity, etc....
Do I need to get the movie "The Secret?" You can buy the DVD and watch it from your computer. I HATE secrets. I need to know what it is!

"The Secret" is no secret. Basically, set a goal, believe in yourself, and work towards it.
There is a semi-new language "the law of positive attraction," "Ask, believe, receive." Not much more than "the power of positive thinking" and "think happy thoughts and you can fly." The message, with different leaders, appears again and again. It's not new at all.
I sound like a cynic, but I'm truly only a cynic about people making money on others' deep desire for emotional and spiritual happiness. It IS good to know what you want. It IS vital to believe you deserve it. And, especially, it IS crucial that you take active steps to make it happen.
Pray for luck, sure. But don't stop working on mastering your life.
Please note: Our "inalienable rights" never promised happiness. Only the pursuit of happiness, which is, indeed, available to everyone. The journey is all. |

If you do a search on the secret or the Law of positive attraction then loads of stuff comes up!
I have the book and the DVD (got them as a gift) it is inspiring stuff but not really a secret!
Basically its about how we tend to focus on the negative but we should focus on the positive and where we want to be as what you focus on is where you will most likely end up! (I think if you think positively you will make different decisions to the ones you perhaps might make if you were being negative)?
Its just about how you view life.

Sidda,
I don't think that you sound like a cynic at all, in fact I think that you sound like a realist; a person with a solid head on their shoulders and not one with their head stuck in the clouds. I fully agree with what you wrote.
You seem to be the type of person that doesn't look to Dr. Phil et al for the answers, instead you'd rather find them yourself. Good for you! I applaud you. Self-help junkies are looking for short terms answers to complex lifelong problems. How long does the advice in the latest self-help book usually last? Probably as long as it takes for it to get bumped down a notch or two on the bestsellers list, that is of course until the next book du jour comes along. |

Thank you for the synopsis, Sidda. I missed the show too and was wondering what all the hype was about. |

I liked the book. Even that it has more "theoretical" info and in real life "to know what you want and (sometimes) to believe you deserve it" are the hardest part to follow.
But many other books have a lot of practical information and techniques like manifestation, visualization, meditation, relaxation and so on and so on.. It's all supposed to help you to achieve what you want but doesn't explain WHY those techniques work. I think that this book is a good try in answering this question. |

Oh this "secret" is driving me nuts!
I have a friend who believes in this and thinks that all of her problems are going to disappear. She read the book, made a list of goals and one of them was to make $100,000 a year. She looked at the list everyday and then at the end of the year she was so excited she said that she actually made $100,000 that year. Well originally in her goal, she wanted to make $100,000 salary a year. What happened was this: 1) she got her base salary of $50K or $60K, then she got back paid like $20K for overtime for last few years, then she made like $20K in wedding gifts.
So really she is bending the rules to fit her goals. Her goal was originally make $100K in salary- well only for last year she made the extra $ b/c of back pay of OT over the year, next year it will be back to standard. Then adding in the wedding gifts made her reach her $100K goal. But what did she spend that year!!! At least $50K on the wedding!
Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but all the "secret" is trying to do is make you list your goals and then try to achieve them- not much of a secret. My friend is driving me nuts right now preaching about it all the time. She is making me hate the secret! |

I have the DVD, loaned it to my son who hasn't watched it (he's waiting for the cliffnotes). I've believed in the power of "The Secret" all of my life and my hubby and I live that basic set of beliefs. Of course when we started out 25 years ago it wasn't called the secret. It was just the theory that successful, positive people attract positive actions and setting goals is the key to success. That's it in a nutshell and we learned it from people like Tony Robbins, Lewis Timberlake and Life Training. It isn't foolproof or "A Secret" and it wasn't overly hyped in DVD's or Oprah. Do I believe in it, yes I do, but I also believe in doing the hard work it takes to make it happen.
As a therapist, teaching people the power of positive thinking and to believe in themselves isn't always that easy. It can take a lot of time and work to erase the years of low self-esteem and negative feedback that some people have, and achieving that victory might not ever happen for some. So in that vein, "The Secret" could be a powerful tool. Anything that gets people to be the little engine that could!
Sidda- I love your qoute on the pursuit of happiness. Now if only we could teach people that in this pursuit of happiness we shouldn't forget that it is an equal opportunity for all and one's rights doesn't supersede another's. |

The Secret for me is "All things are possible to him that believes." Being human sometimes I forget to enforce this attitude in my life but do find my way back to this scripture. |

It's mega cheesy. So you'd want to have some crackers with it. |

It is sort of cheesy, isn't it?
Hubby just had to order the DVD. I think the secret's in how much money they make from the sales of it!

I think the "secret" is not about making you list your goals (there is another and more detailed book about it by Brian Tracy, for example ) and, of course, it is not about making $50 or $100K a year.
It's about your attitude and how and WHY your attitude can effect all aspects of your life. Yes, the book is written too simple for sophisticated readers And yes, it is not really a secret, I agree. (If you read a lot and just think a lot, of course.)
But the fact is that still many people don't realize how important is to have a right attitude to make right decisions and attract right things |

OK, I have not read this "secret", but I dont need to given what I have seen here.
For more than a decade I have known of and believed in "the power of postive thinking". Will I win lotto if I go buy a weekly ticket with a positive mind and telling myself I will win? well, I doubt it (but it is nice to dream ) But I sure know that you are never going to be happy without a positive attitude. And I can guarantee that anytime I am feeling down or unhappy I am in a dark place with my thoughts and giving off a lot of negative vibes, so rather than go off on a tangent about idot drivers or rude people on the train, I try to block them out and remind myself that I can count myself lucky to recognize the behaviour and not act like that myself.
Bah. I need sleep.. that was a caffeine induced paragraphed... |

I completely agree with you that positive thinking and having the right attitude are very important in each decision you make. I did start to read the book by someone named rhonda (can't remember the last name) and couldn't get past the first 5 pages, because it seemed too cheesy for me, when its just common sense about postive thinking (in my opinion).
My only beef with it is that my friend it taking it to another level and thinking that a miracle is taking place in her life because she is making a list of what she wants, and then manipulates the outcomes of her life to match her goals. |

I do believe in positive attitude and trying to reinforce positive thinking.
My mother had the DVD that her principle lent to her. I had a bad few weeks dealing with shocking and very sad legal cases and my mother asked me to watch it. I noticed quickly how poor my attitude was and tried to change it. I don't think it is worth spending your money on the DVD or the book, unless you find it to be personally motivating for you. |

All very good insights!
One thing I got from it was that I have to center myself each day and make my attitude one of Lovingkindness - to first of all, myself, and then it will spill over into all I do.
Yeah I thought the idea of attracting $$$, and this big house, and this beautiful lady was kinda cheesy and off-putting too. Kind of crass for what really is a very spiritual topic.
But whatever it takes to get someone's attention and get them thinking about how to get out of a bad place....many ways to say the same thing. |

Sidda's summary is spot-on. And yes, there are portions that are cheesy, but I like to say that some of the people who appear in the DVD are "characters". But here's why I often return to it, and enjoy Oprah's segments as well:

I know the "Secret"!!!
Don't watch television, read gossip or fashion mags, or believe anyone who is a popular figure or is a topic in Hollywood.
The clue is if you see their face on the trash newspapers in the checkout section of the grocery store, well that's them.
I can't stand Oprah, Donald Trump, Tom Cruise or any other of these folks who blah blah blah via any media form. They make my stomach churn.
I'd like to add politicians to my liar's list also.
They are the same as everyone else. They just got lucky. You can too.
Sorry to be the big skeptic here, but my mind tends to lean toward scientific proof and logic.
The most wonderful, successful, happy people in the world are so boring that you don't know who they are!
Why are they boring and unheard of? Because they are listening and observing. They have no need to explain their happiness or dig into people's business. They are just happy that they are who they are. |

the one thing that I've gotten from the Secret is the power of positive thinking. I used to think of what I didn't want and say the things I didn't want which came off as complaining. Now, I think in the terms of things I do want. It keeps me thinking positively which helps my mental outlook. |
