As a few of you know I was looking into moving in with the b/f, some advised just living together first before buying a place, but I guess it went out one ear and out the next and we took the plunge yesterday , put down the earnst money and moving foward. We've been shopping around and went with new construction. Beautiful brick 3 level story townhome. I can't wait! Only the foundation has been laid and now we build to our specifications. I almost threw up while signing all the paper yesterday thinking to myself...good lord what did I get myself into .
I know it's a big step and perhaps not the safest route, but I'm pretty sure he's the one and we've discussed future endeavors of getting married and such. Now it's the waiting period since it won't be ready til about June/July. I'm pretty sure picking out the wood floors, cabinets, where to place the recess lighting, color of granite etc is going to be a headache, but I'll endure it with grace since I know it'll be a beautiful home when finished.
A little scared though, and anxious along with a whole bunch of emotions rushing at once. This may be a good year, new job, new house..perhaps new side venture..(clears throat ). Any advice ladies? We pretty much need to start from scratch. All new furniture and we can't even paint until the house settles *bummer* I guess this means more blockbuster nights in instead spluring $200/week to eat out? |

Julie, congratulations This is terrific even though a little scarey. I think you will enjoy having everything in your new home be ya'll's (pardon my Texan). It may be a bit of a pain getting it all picked out, but once you are in I bet you just love it. I think it's a terrific way to start.
Salli
P.S. My DH bought us a house before we were married |

Oh do I remember that feeling! Though I did actually did get sick, lol. I was a wreck the morning of the closing, went there signed my life away walked out and promptly found the 1st garbage can outside! Quite a visual - sorry...
It's a very exciting time! Take your time - don't try to get everything at once. You'll feel too over-whelmed and wind up not being happy with it in 6 months time. You've signed your life away for the next 30 yrs or so, there's no rush. |

Candy,
That's what I thought to myself ...I just sold my soul to the devil for the next 30 years . I'll probably be shaking at the closing, sweaty palms, that little knot in my throat, possibly crying .
Oh we won't do everything at once..I'll be poor! Basically will be furnishing one room at a time so no guests unless they want to sleep on a blow up mattress . June seems so FARRRR away though |

I can So remember that feeling!!
The day we moved into our first new house, we had our entire possessions in the back of a car!! The only furniture we had was two plastic garden chairs my mum had given us so at least we could sit down!
Fortunately we were lucky enough to have saved up a bit so that we could have everything new, the first week was just a constant stream of delivery vans. I wonder what the neighbours thought! The downside of having everything new at the same time is that they all more or less have the same shelf life, so everything broke at about the same time too!
Good luck and remember it's only 25-30 years of your life that you'll be without money! |

Julie, don't let them scare you. I've bought and sold so many houses. Not hard. |

Julie, I think that's fabulous, too. Congratulations. Everything will work out well. Take a deep breath and say, "Mine, mine, mine."
"I'm pretty sure picking out the wood floors, cabinets, where to place the recess lighting, color of granite etc is going to be a headache, but I'll endure it with grace since I know it'll be a beautiful home when finished."
Now, THAT'S the fun part; not at all a "headache". It's SHOPPIN'! Gawd, I decorating.

I'm actually taking a semester off. Finances are a little strained now because of the new purchase. I'm not in a hurry. Finished up my MBA last year and may as well take a break now. I do plan on going back soon and really want to pursue my Doctorate also. |

Hey congratulations! How exciting!!!!
BTW, picking out all the components won't be a pain at all. It's actually alot of fun. The pain comes later when you start cataloging all the builders' mistakes...... |

Congratulations ! It will be so much fun. Just remember, when you two disagree on some decor don't take it too seriously, in 3 years time you won't even remember about the color of the wall you were fighting about... or the furniture or the color of the carpet.. |

Yeah they do a walk through at closing, then a 3 month and then a year walk through. They say to keep a list and pretty much write anything down when we see it so that we don't miss anything. I'm so petty watch the list be 25 pages long . I'm pretty excited about picking everything out, this is way cooler than dressing my Barbie . I'm afraid the b/f and I will bump heads (as if he wears the pants pfft ) |

Home ownership is a wonderful, liberating thing (once you stop shaking!)....And when you have love AND a home nest to boot, then "Blockbuster Nights" aren't so bad
Enjoy it all!

Congratulations Julie and don't forget to have an inspection before you move in and when they complete construction. (Just added peace of mind.) |

Yay for you and BF, Julie! SOOOO exciting! You should have a lot of fun with this. Don't worry, June will be here before you know it!
You've gotten a lot of great advice from the girls here, so I don't have any to add, really, other than to document the entire process as much as possible (whom you talk to, when and about what) should any snafus arise. Other than that, enjoy!
P.S. I didn't know you were in law school, too! Ambitious girl - good for you. You're going to have alphabet soup after your name, aren't you?! |

Julie congratulations and best wishes. There is nothing like your very own home. You will feel so proud putting your personal touches into it one by one. My only advice is take your time decorating. Make sure you LOVE what you purchase and can live with it for years.
I am very happy for you. |

Congratulations How very exciting! We bought our first house 4 years ago and I felt a little over-whelmed at all the available finishing choices. I found it most helpful to clip pix from decor magazines and make choices based on what I could see.I felt more confident picking out cabinets, counters, floors, etc. that I could see together in the picture.Enjoy every minute of it.It will be June before you know it. |

Congratulations!! I can understand the anxious feelings you're having as I've had them myself. It is a stressful process but a satisfying one in the end. Anything worth having takes some effort so don't worry too much about all the work that new home-onwership requires. Just think how happy you'll be the first day you walk into your new house and know that it's yours, ALL YOURS!!! |
