I bought this 99% Pure Aloe Vera Gel from Trader Joe's to use it as a base for my DMAE active I got from SAS. I'll probably add distilled water and sea kelp bioferment and a few other actives to the mix, too.
I'm a bit concerned about using this Aloe Vera Gel because it got some parabens, EDTA, TEA-Carbomer, and Urea in it, so I'd like your opinion on whether it's safe to use this as a DMAE base. I plan to use the DMAE serum all over my body, especially my tummy and the girls.
Ingredients: Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Butylene Glycol, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Tocophersolan, TEA-Carbomer, Methylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Trisodium, EDTA.
I highlighted the questionable ingredients, and would appreciate anyone's input regarding the safety of them. Thank you! |

TEA-Carbomer is an acrylic gelling agent that thickens your aloe vera and keeps it clear-looking. It is probably at about a 1% concentration in the total product.
The others are preservatives and chelators - grouped concentration in total would also be about 1% of the total product.
Unless you know for sure you are allergic to any of these substances, then I would venture to say there would be no issues.
All these chemicals have been approved for use within limited concentrations by the US Government. They would have been subjected to extensive testing. This however does not preclude the possibility of individual allergies to these substances. |

I worry about the carbomer, parabens, EDTA, and Urea being cancer causing substances. This is why I'm hesitating to use it as my base, especially if I'm going to rub it all over the girls. |

Buy an aloe vera barbadensis plant, and feed it with your own organic compost.
You can easily harvest your own aloe vera juice from it by filleting the leaves and processing the gel in a mixer.
And if you want to thicken it, there are natural thickeners such as xanthan gum or guar gum.
But you still have to add a perservative if you want it to keep for a week and more. |

You can also buy aloe leaves from almost every grocery store. |

Just two quick comments:
1. how can something be "99%" when the first ingredient is water?!
2. Don't confuse Urea (in your Trader Joe's) with Diazolidinyl Urea (in the CVS one mentioned). Urea is a super moisturizing ingredient, whilst Diazolidinyl Urea is a preservative that is a formaldehyde donor.
Urea: moisturizing ingredient.
Imidazolidinyl & Diazolidinyl Urea: preservatives. formalehyde donors. can also cause contact dermatitis.

Diazolidinyl Urea is used as a preservative in both the Trader Joe and CVS aloe vera products. |

just wondering... if you want to go "pure" why dont you just get a plant, then peel the stems and puree?! No purer than that! |

I never thought of that. I am a beginner DIY'er. I think I already have the aloe plant in my front yard. The smell is strong though. It's like someone hasn't taken a shower for a week. Also I thought it would spoil fast. |

I got it at a local health food/vitamin/cosmetic store. Label says it's made in Texas. Not that that helps...
And yes I meant Carbomer 940.
Just googled: the brand has a website, and is sold by vitaminshoppe, vitacost, etc..
