Hi Gals and Guys. I need some advice, please
I'm considering whether or not to start using retinol. (SkinCeauticals 0.5) I've been reading this forum, aswell as MUA, and people seem to have great results with it. Problem is I'm only 20, and I read a remark on here that if you start using it in your 20's, you won't have much skin left when your 50!! lol.
BUT, then I heard that its great to start using it this early because it stops the rise of collagenese (sp?) after UV exposure?
So my question is, as I am 20 (but looking for some serious anti-aging prevention) do you think I should hold off on retinol and go for peptides? My aim is to boost collagen, thicken the epidemris etc.
I use sunscreen everyday (Clarins UV plus spf 40- is that a good one?), and I'm going to start using Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair, but I am looking for something like retinol that will have an impact.
Please Help!
P.S. I have uneven skin tone, clogged pores on nose, and the beginning of fine lines starting to creep. Other than that I have pretty firm skin. I'm young but I can see the onset of aging and I DO NOT like it
Also, I don't smoke, rarely drink, and follow Low GI diet. |

At your age, it is most important to use a sunscreen with good protection from UVA rays. The Clarins sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and doesn't provide good enough UVA protection. And it also contains alcohol which tends to aggravate fine lines. Please read the sunscreensfaq notepad on makeupalley to get info on sunscreens and help with sunscreen selection. You also need to use sufficient amount of the sunscreen (1/4 teaspoon or 1.25 for the face).
Skinceuticals retinol 0.5% would be a good starting point or else the PSF (Pure Skin Formulations) retinol which is sold on EDS. PSF gives a suggested regime for using retinol (on their website). You probably don't need to use it every day. It has some comedolytic activity so it may even help with comedones (clogged pores). But you may need another exfoliation product for the clogged pores. Retinol exfoliates the upper layers of the skin but helps to build collagen in the deeper layers. There is a good notepad on retinoids on makeupalley under the member name tetrakis.
Good luck. |

Thanks so much. Those re-directions were great, especially tetrakis' notepad! Answered all my questions, especially about starting retinol during the 20's. Thanks for that.
Quite disappointed @ Clarins product.I've been looking through the sunscreen notepad but cannot find one that has a high UVA/UVB protection, is physical, and is for dry skin! Any suggestions?
I really want to get an effective sunscreen before I start retinol.
P.S. I think I will use a vitamin c serum in the mornings, instead of EL Advanced Night Repair. |

I think I found a sunscreen:
LA ROCHE-POSAY ANTHELIOS Melt-In Cream SPF 50.
In your opinion, do you think that will provide adequate protection? TIA. |

Jammie you are taking good preventive measures now. I gavne't tried your sunscreen, but looked it up. It does claim to give both uba and ubv (very important) protection, and has good reviews. I would still start good sun protective habits, such as wearing a sunhat and sunglasses, and not sunbathing, however. |

La Roche-Posay sunscreen is really good, but are you wearing SPF50 cream for daily use? Unless you have extreme light sensitivities or too much daily sun exposure, SPF30 sunblock is generally recommended. |
