FYI,
I wore bioderma max fluide spf 50 sunscreen today, applied liberally one hour before having lunch outside in the balmy parisian sun (read: NOT strong) and totally got a tan on my face today, as if I wasn't wearing ss at all... So disappointing, I love the texture and how it feels on my skin.
Anyone else experience the same thing?
I think it is back to Skinceuticals sport spf 45 (mostly physical ss, even in mexico in 90 degree sunny weather, i stayed ghostly after one week) for me!

How long were you in the sun? An hour or so? I used a sample of this once and used a very heavy application with reapplication after 2 or 3 hours when I was in the sun all day-maybe 8 hours or so. I did not tan or burn but my skin had a glow which I take to mean that the product was not totally effective. I don't mind a glow but IMO a glow after being in the sun is a bad thing. BTW I don't really tan but maybe if I did then I would have gotten a light tan that day. I will be interesting to hear if others have found this sunscreen to be less than fully protective. Oddly enough I too have applied mostly physical sunscreens and had no burn, tan or even a glow, which I think is a good thing! |

I have yet to find a SS I like, tho you're right about the Skinseuticals. It does work, but it's a heavy texture for everyday. MMU helps me a lot, and I think this year I'm going to try to develop a relationship with hats! |

I'm using Bioderma Photoderm Tinted with SPF50+. Is this the same thing as yours, Ava?
I don't like mine because of the tint factor. It also balls up sometimes.
However, I don't get tan or burn easily since my skin is pigmented already. I can never tell if any sunscreen is effective on me. I guess it is because if I don't wear it, I can and will get a burn. |

hey guys,
guess i should explain more... most of you have seen my face--i'm paler than i ever have been in my life (yay!). That said, i tan VERY easily (i've never had a sunburn in my life), i go from light green to nut brown in a couple of hours. Basically, because I tan so easily, the fact that i was in the sun for about 45 minutes about 1 hour after application (the window during which chemical sunscreens are supposed to be their most effective) freaked the heck out of me. It was as if I wasn't wearing anything at all. I slathered it on pretty good, in fact, because I knew it would be that first spring day above 55 degrees!
re: sc sport ss for daily use, if you do a light dusting of powder over it, it's usually fine...
cherisse: i use the regular, not tinted, version. Guess my new bottle i was getting ready to break into is going back!
I hate this whole sunscreen issue. Can't they just come out with a technology that WORKS and that we can actually wear? I tried Avene's creme minerale, and it's a nightmare on the skin... any other recs for euro ss welcomed--i'm in paris and don't exactly want to pay double for SC...

pic of me tan, so scary for two reasons: 1. it is a strangely disturbing photo, i know, of my leg on top of my bf's leg, and 2. even more disturbing because my boyfriend and i had the very same beach time together, of course he wore lots of ss, the pale thing:
FYI, i wear 15 on my body at the beach, and this is after maybe three days in nantucket in the summer! |

I know it's bad, but your gorgeously tan leg in the photo makes me want too run out into the sun! Maybe I need a trip to Mystic Tan..... |

Hi Avalange,
Out of curiosity, did you wear make-up like foundation or powder on your face after you put the sunscreen on? I find when I do it rubs off the sunscreen. Now, I use a mineral bases sunscreen and put mineral poweder on top of that. I've used the Bioderma ss, I just didn't feel comfortable because it seemed to rub off very easily. |

i wear a bit of mineral powder very delicately applied on my tzone, that's it! if anything, it should enhance the sunscreen action, no?

Strange but your tan is lovely. Some people pay a lot of money to have such a gorgeous tan.
Is your sunscreen still in date? |

AWWW, you guys are so sweet! scary thing is, since i never ever burned, i always got super tan like this, and my oblivious mom never thought to put sunscreen on me.... we'll see how that goes when i'm older !
re: sunscreen expiration, i bought this fresh two months ago, so i don't think it expired. I honestly think that chemical sunscreens degrade a LOT faster on the skin than the companies are willing to admit...

Ava, I'm confused. So Bioderma is a chemical SS? But the one I bought is supposed to have an SPF factor of 100. I appreciate your post that it's not effective because I know I can't test it on myself to see any difference. I won't buy this one full size for sure. I only bought a sample. Thank god. |

I've been told that if the sunscreen doesn't contain zinc oxide then it's a chemical sunscreen.
Ava, your tan looks really nice! Many girls here would kill to get that kind of tan!! |

sorry, i feel like i'm misleading people here. that picture of my tan is from 2005!
i am ghostly white right now, especially my face, which is why i am surprised that bioderma max fluide 50 actually made my face a bit tan today... i believe it is mostly a chemical sunscreen... can someone elaborate?

i just typed a long answer and the forum lost it. too tired to retype.... please look at this thread for the sunscreen i'm using and the ingredients, Avene Emulsion SPF50+ http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=22334. i was out in the exact same sun as avalange, give or take a few arrondissements, and did not get any colour on my face. unlike Bioderma (which will destabilise even with mineral powder -- which is why you got colour), you can wear makeup over the Avene. |

I've mentioned before in Reviews that I got burnt using the Bioderma Fluide last summer. I put it down to the fact that my skin seemed overly sensitive at that time to the sun and this was southern China, but I was only walking home in the late afternoon so I wonder about this SS too. I'm thinking they're replacing this because it's no longer for sale on skincarecentral and its 'while stocks last' on Tubotica. Does anyone know? |

I wonder where you bought that from because SS haven't been allowed to state that they have 100 SPF for years (here in Europe certainly). Though I saw on the Bioderma site that they still had products claiming that - I was assuming that it was an old website. |

OK this is what I was afraid of I've been using this this winter (Chicago) and was concerned w/ how it would do in the summer as it's pretty liquid. How can they say its spf 50 and ppd 35 if so many have gotten color w/ it
I agree (with Avalange?) - why can't they just get it right? We can put things in space but not make a good s/s to protect us
So the search continues. I've been wondering about Sofina since it has nothing but raves, but I thought I was doing a good thing for my skin by getting a s/s with a high ppd.
Go******it, I want a s/s that truly protects from both uva and uvb rays, is at least water resistant if not waterproof, and looks good on my skin but doesn't cause problems. Does it exist |

The short answer is no. No sunblock will block out all tanning/damaging rays. BTW, any spf over 30 or 35 is meaningless. That's why you have to wear a hat etc. I won't tan with high spfs (much-but I need a hat) but my melasma spots will certainly stand out & get darker..that's with a high SPF. Even with a hat, if I'm in the water, the sun's rays reflect onto my face and....well, you can guess the rest. It all depends on your sensitivity as well. As my derm. told me years ago, you need a thick slab of zinc oxide & make sure you're nice & white (coated). Short of that, we're just minimizing the damage. I just use the best non-chemical I feel comfortable using for daily use & stay out of the sun. When I'm in Greece (melasma heaven) I use the euros or sofina with pure zinc oxide paste on my melasma spots...yes, I look like a Greek goddess
Once I'm in the water, let's face it, the hat just protects my hair & that's it. My body (no matter what I wear) turns pure golden bronze in a day & stays that way through the winter. |

Hi ladies - Any SS like Bioderma which contains avobenzone will be less effective when worn under makeup. Avobenzone is an effective chemical filter, but it's very unstable. Bioderma Photoderm MAX Fluide also contains Tinosorb which can stabilize it, but then the addition of makeup (especially MMU) will turn around and destabilize avobenzone. So avalange, if you applied some makeup on top (or anything else over or under that contains any metallic substances), this could've made the SPF and PPD value much less than optimal. That's why I switched back to Avene Emulsion SPF50+ -- it doesn't contain avobenzone. |

That is true...I didn't think of that! I didn't use mineral make-up when I used the Bioderma for that reason. |

Well, you learn something new everyday - My m/u has been Alima MMU for the past few mos (really like it ). I guess I'll keep searching thru the threads for the "best" s/s. If anyone has a particular s/s or thread or site that is helpful I'd really appreciate it. |

I am wondering if the person who got tan after using the sunscreen got a batch that was just bad? A lot of times a tube can sit in a warehouse for a long time or go from hot to cool and back to hot storage which can effect the chemical composition. At any rate, this sunscreen I have been using is worth a look at. It works very well and is the only one that doesn't have any garbage chemicals in it, although so many others claims they don't! I get it online from bionutz com. Let me know if anyone else has used it yet. It was developed in Australia by a woman for her baby, pretty cool |
