Hi, all. I just wanted to pass along a tip about using GSE (Grape Seed Extract) topically to combat breakouts or acne. I heard about this on another skin care board and since I already have been using it, though not for skincare (purifying fresh veggies & fruits and sometimes internally), I thought I'd give it a whirl.
Well, I had the Nutribiotics brand and initially tried that but did not get the "oh my god, my face is burning off" sensation that others had noted so I thought perhaps it wasn't fresh or something. So, I bought Source Naturals and had the exact same experience. I suppose my skin is not sensitive to this at all and was surprised but hey, my skin says/does what it wants. Anyway, it's recommended to apply to damp skin and I leave it on for about 30 seconds - 1 minute while I massage it around. Some people also recommend diluting it 50/50 so do a patch test first. This stuff is great! I've been using it 2x/day after my main wash and just to fight breakouts because I've been testing products lately and am always having some sort of reaction. The GSE normally clears me up overnight. I do not get cystic acne very often so can't vouch for that but hear it will help there, too. What I generally get is clogged pores and whiteheads.
So, if you want a cheap tool for your anti-acne arsenal, I definitely recommend this. It's also a strong antioxidant so there's another plus! |

Is the extract you are using pure GSE? It's not normally sold in alcohol tinctures is it? |

No, it's not pure, as in 100% GSE, and not a tincture made with alcohol. The two I've used:
NutriBiotic
Vegetable glycerin 67%
Citricidal 33%
Source Naturals (no % given)
Citricidex
Glycerin
Basically, the active ingredient is a compound made from the extract (or is the extract, depending on how you look at it, I suppose). BTW, the taste is very, very strong so if you want to take internally, it's probably best to mix with in something like orange juice. |

Isn't this Grapefruit seed extract that you're talking about? Unfortunately, the GSE abbreviation has been used for both grapeseed extract and grapefruit seed extract, two very different products.
Grapefruit seed extract is a citric extract with many uses, from killing yeast, antibacterial, anti fungal, etc.
Just google it and you'll be surprised how many different things it can be used for |

Yes, it's Grapefruit Seed Extract! Thanks for pointing that out; unfortunately, I can't edit the thread title. |

Sounds great! Quick question - can be bought as a chemist or the health store? Is it a liquid or a pill? |

You'll more likely find it at a health food store. I bought mine online at the Vitamin Shoppe (the Source Naturals) and it's in a gloopy liquid state with a vegetable glycerin base. |

Scally made this recommendation to me about a week ago as I was breaking out, and I really like it. I used it diluted, and had no stinging at all. My skin feels really clean after I use it. I don't ordinarily break out, but when I do I don't heal quickly. I do think my spots healed quicker then usual. I'd like to try putting it in a body cleanser. Yum! |

It's actually Grapefruit Seed Extract; I made a typo in the title and can't edit. |

I want to say again what a great method this is. If I am breaking out at all, I use about 10 drops on my wet face, leave it on for about a minite, and rinse off. My face feels so clean afterward! And I really think it heals blemishes. I forget how good it is, and then go back. Thanks, Scally! |

I did not have acne problems but I used to take grape seed extract as a supplement.
I think it's good for skin. |

Very interesting, I like natural stuff, so I am going to give it a shot. It might just suit my daily skin care regimen. |
