My Mom called me today to tell me some really shocking news (no pun intended...)! We've been having some really severe storms here in the midwest recently, and apparently today my parents' house was hit by lightning! Not to worry--- no one in the house was so much as injured, and they have already secured a tarp over the roof, and repairs will begin soon. My Mom said when it happened she was making dinner, but of course thanks to all that dust and dirt that came in everything that she was making had to be thrown away... I'm just so relieved that everyone was ok!

Liz, I'm so very relieved to hear that your parents weren't hurt. I never realized that lightning could cause such explosive damage--a fire, yes, but this just boggles the mind.

Talk about a scare! So happy they are ok!
My grandparent's house got hit last summer. It's such a scary thing to think about...it happens with little warning and it has got to be SO loud and earth shaking. |

I'm glad everyone is okay. It looks like that one wooden beam kept all those bricks from falling. What a great beam! |

Whoa! I totally feel for you and your family. (My parents' home was lost to a fire in '05). Just tell your parents to document EVERYTHING (the pictures are a great start) which will help when it comes to dealing with their insurance company. I also suggest telling them to keep a notebook/log of every sort of correspondence that takes place. If you have any questions in dealing with insurance companies and/or contractors (both can be a pain, trust me), you know how to reach me.
Best to your parents! (I'm glad nobody was hurt!) |

Thank you everyone for your well-wishes--- they are greatly appreciated!!!
RMB-- Yes, it looks to me too like that one beam kept most of the bricks from falling into the house. I'm extremely thankful for that very strong beam!!!
Amnis-- Thank you very much for your advice and insight. I will pass along that info to my parents ASAP and will be in touch with you.^-^ |

I am glad your family is ok and wow those photos are scary. I can't believe lightening can create all of those problems...I mean I can but you don't think of lightening as causing structural damage. |

That's scary! It makes you wonder .. you always assume you're safe inside with a lightning/thunderstorm, but I guess there is that slight chance that something could happen anywhere.
I'm really glad everyone was ok. |
