I’m heading out to the aesthetic plastic surgery conference in New York. Medical device and cosmeceutical companies like Skinceuticals will be there.

Anyone have any suggestions to sample or questions? I'm hoping I have enough time to really scope out the cool and new products.

BTW, one thing I won’t do is pester Jan Marini Skin Research.

I contacted FDA a few weeks ago. There are no records of any warning letter or request for recall to Jan Marini. I keep repeating this ...Everything you hear about JMAIE recalls, FDA and formulation problems are absolutely not true.

Note that FDA did request "Jen-On Herbal" to recall their products which contain
Quote:
"an analog of an FDA-approved drug".
The ingredient
Quote:
"is close in structure to the FDA-approved drug and is expected to possess a similar pharmacological and adverse event profile".

Therefore, if JMAIE contained a prescription drug, or something similar ... uh, FDA would've requested a recall. Nuff said.

Thanks for the JM information. I had long suspected that the FDA would not allow a prescription drug (or apparently from what you say even an analoge of a prescription drug) to be put in a cosmetic and from what you said about the Jen-On it is apparent that this is not allowed!!

Can you post a link that has a list of exhibitors at the trade show? It would be nice to see who will be there to see if I have questions for any of them.

Yes, thank you for the JM info! I've happily used JM products off and on for years now (as well as the original eyelash product...haven't tried the new one yet).

I know anything is possible, but I just can't believe that a person as business savvy as Jan Marini would do something stupid like put an Rx drug in a cosmetic product without going through the proper channels -- JMHO.

I'm a big fan of retinaldihyde (sp) (Avene) products -- they agree with my skin much more than any Rx retinoid or OTC retinol products. I'm curious if there are any OTC type of Vit A products comparable to Avene's in the making -- something more of a serum suitable to oily skin.

Thanks again for checking in with us - look forward to hearing all about the conference -- take notes! Wink

Hmm. Maybe you'll have some wonderful discoveries for us all to try. Have fun.

I thought someone here did call the FDA and was told they couldn't comment on an ongoing investigation.

Either way, for me, it doesn't matter. I found the way they talked out of both sides of their mouth offputting and not a company I wish to do business with.

Oh, with FDA investigation. They can't comment but any warning letters, or recall requests are noted in a weekly newsletter. It's like a lawsuit. Company may not be able to comment on the case, but filing of the lawsuit is public record. FDA is typical government - freakishly detailed about reports and any communication. (uh, if anyone works for FDA ... I love you guys! Smile

Thank you for sharing the list. I think Galderma Laboratories make Cetaphil? I don't like their moisturizer formulation and are they considering to improve their moisturizers?

Vivier Pharma: I would love to know if they will be still in business? I have to ask because I find it more difficult to find their products in Ontario and I love their Vivier Vitamin C 20% Are they willing to create a stable Vitamin C with 20% for the body?

Those are my questions. If you can remember to ask on my behalf, I would really appreciate it. Smile

Thanks everyone! I'll print out this list tomorrow morning.

I really do appreciate this because it gives me a reason to go check out the booths and talk to reps. (vs. my usual ...uh, what you got?) So keep it coming!

Rjex,
Thank you for the information about Jan Marini. I'm really confused now more than ever.
If the FDA wasn't looking into something at JM, then why did they change their formula (JM's reps do admit that they changed the formula) And, since everyone who used the old formula sang it's praises, I can't imagine JM would tamper with perfection unless they had to...like by the FDA).
BluesHeart, I also recall reading that about someone calling the FDA and being told they couldn't comment on an "ongoing investigation" which is obviously not the same thing as "there's no investigation going on". So, unless that person made the whole thing up(which I doubt) then it does sound like something was going on. Too bad we'll probably never find out one way or the other.
I was so confused about this new formula that I finally decided to try Revitalash which just arrived today. I have been using the old JM formula and thought it was fantastic. Believe me, I would have preferred to stay with JM, but since all we were able to get from that company was conflicting stories from their reps, I decided to go with Revitalash.

Aimee, thank you. I was wondering if my mind had made that one up. I 'think' it was ParisTroika but wouldn't bet on it. I didn't try JMAIE as her products tend to irritate the heck out of my eyes and I was nervous about using an eye product of JM's. I've been very happy with RL and I hope you find it works as well for you.

I'll tell you for the past 2 months I was reading everything on EDS forum about JM's and Revitalash, and whereas there were mixed reviews on Revitalash (some glowing, some so-so, and only a couple that said it did nothing) the couple of reviews on the NEW JM were all disappointing (except for the last one which someone posted this week).
Maybe whoever called the FDA will post after reading this?

I'm back .... but uber busy so this is a quick post and run....

I scored some really great samples and there were great discounts for show members at Jane Iredale and GloMinerals.

I even think a few aestheticians will be posting here next week.

Marla – Unfortunately, Avene wasn't there and everyone I asked about vitamin A products sort of bashed everyone else and said their's was the best for oily skin. Everyone kept telling me that they're launching something in 2 months or the end of the year. I took notes and will write something up.

Skincare - Vivier was shocked that you're having problems finding their C serum. They suggest using their physician search atwww.vivierpharma.com. No plans for a body C product and they suggest using a few drops of the C, then applying moisturizer. I also have the reps card. Normally they prefer you call Customer Service, but if you had specific questions, to PM me, then I could contact her.
Galderma had a ton of samples and docs were there every day for stuff. The rep said that they have no plans to reformulate the moisturizers as they are top sellers. She did mention new products and I'll have to go through my suitcase for notes.

Yes, ask Skinmedica about their C serum - i.e.- how can a silicone based solution allow for penetration? Silicone is for barrier protection, it's supposed to keep ingredients from penetrating - so how does the C penetrate to the lower skin layers?

Doesn't make sense unless they can explain that LOL

It sounds like Rjez already went to the trade show so I don't think she will be able to ask the question about the SkinMedica.

I used this C serum before and have studied the formula some. Silicones are used for barrier protection but there are many varities of silicones. The majority of the silicones in the SkinMedica C serum are what they call volatile silicones. This means that they mostly evaporate and leave the other ingredients behind. I am very impressed with this C and feel that the formula is well done. A study has been done using a product like the SkinMedica one (silicone base and two forms of vitamin C) and it did show that the product produced results which would lead me to beleive that the formula is capable of penetrating the skin.

Here is an interesting forum discussion that addresses the silicone issue.

http://www.smartskincare.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1482&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

And here is a link to the study that I mentioned.

http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/links/doi/10.1046/j.1524-4725.2002.01129.x/abs/

I will try to find some more links for you when I have the time.

Okay - this is a really, really, sad, belated update ...

Came back from the show to a very busy month: routine FDA audit, company move, phone company crashed, board meeting ....

If anyone's interested - I jotted down the companies I visited and any brief info. If anyone is interested further - I can see if I've got details in literature.

Most of the companies were skin care, fillers, derm needles, cellulite & skin lasers. I got a ton of samples from almost everyone except Obagi.

Michele Lee (Knott's Landing) was cruising the show stopping to check out every booth.

Seems like the "hot" items are HA and C serums. Everyone has one and claims their's is best.

VitaMedica – Arnica Montana: sublingual tablets
Boiron - Arnica gel, cream and sublingual

Auriderm clarifying gel with vitamin K

SkinCeuticals –patented delivery system for retinol. 1.0 stronger than Green Cream.

Nia24 – niacinamide is fat soluble. Have technology to make their niacin water soluble to penetrate the skin. Good clinical studies showing effectiveness of myrstyl nicotinate.

Vivier Pharmaceuticals-

IS Clinical - "Youth" launched 2 months ago. Clinical paper on Pro-Heal Serum in a couple of months. Strongest C, anti-inflammatory, C&E, retinol.

Beneve – Pure titanium dioxide in water. Limited combining for stability. Launching TCA soon. Instant Lifting serum.

Jane Iredale – 50% off

GloMinerals – 10% off.

Cellex C – 10 % off. Hydra 5 B complex (HA)

Allergan – Juvederm promo.

SkinMedica – 2 step TNS: lip renewal and lip plumper. Fine lines & plump with Niacin
Free sampler kit. http://www.skinmedica.com/freesampler
TNS giveaway. http://www.skinmedicaaesthetics.com/tns-giveaway

DermHA – primarily moisturizing products with fruit acid, AHA, 12% C

Galderma – launching new Cetaphil cream in a couple of months

Obagi

Young – customizable products.
