Hi everyone,
I have just mixed up my first several small batches of my DIY product.
I purchased from SAS and mixed up:
Matrixyl
natural peptides
Sea kelp Bioferment
Alpha Lipoic Acid
CoQ10
First batch I mixed up the Matrixyl, peptides & SKB into canvas cream...the smell was fine just not emmoiliant enough for me. Made the mistake of adding Shea Butter and then it began balling up on me. Onto the next experiment
My next batch I added the Matrixyl, natural peptides PLUS the Q10 and ALA into some Nivea Visage (SKB too drying). Well, I'm not so happy that the nivea has petrolatem (sp)but was anxious to see how the mix would fare. It mixed up and applied fine but after I had closed and reopened the jar there was this brief, RANK smell that escaped. I mean like bad eggs. But when I smelled the actual cream there was no smell. I thought maybe the nivea scent didn't mix well w/ the actives. So once again I started a new batch.
This time I used CeraVe. Love this lotion. I mixed the same 4 ingredients (ala, q10, mtrixyl & peptides) and the same RANK smell appears when the jar has been closed then re-opened.
Anyone have a CLUE what is going on? What combo of these four ingredients would be the culprit?
I figure since the cream itself isn't smelly I'll continue to use it till its gonne, but would like to avoid the BAD EGG gassy smell that escapes from the jar.
ALSO I purchased some Rosehip Seed oil, ceramides and HA from GOW that I intend to mix in as well. |

Hi, I'm not sure what your smell is from but if you find out please let us know. I'm getting ready to mix up some of the some actives into GOW's veggie base cream. |

From your ingredient list, I have tried Matrixyl, natural peptides and Sea kelp Bioferment from SAS and they didn't stink so I could guess its something else that's causing the smell. |

It sounds like an ingredient common to the CeraVe and Nivea Visage (but not in the Canvas or SKB) would be the culprit, doesn't it? Either an interaction among ingredients or an interaction of ingredients with the jar.
Why don't you ask Hanna or Markey how to improve the emolient factor of their base creams instead of adding to other brands?
javascript:emoticon('')Are you sure the cream you're wearing doesn't smell? |

For me the SAS SKB stinks big time! It has the aroma of the old waxy toilet paper with disinfectant from a public lavatory circa 1970s. Luckily it eases off quickly once on your skin. |

The canvas cream mixture didn't contain the ALA & CoQ10-so not necessarily. It was only when I added those two ingredients that the smell occured. A lot of people use the CeraVe as a base cream for many actives-and so far haven't read about any 'smell' interactions.

Good idea. Though I think I found that CeraVe is a good base cream for me so I'll stick with it for now. I did just email Hannaha to find out what her thoughts were on this smelly dilema...so I'll let everyone know

I had to leave out the SKB as it was too drying for me |

sorry, I misread that soccermom - thought you were mixing it in the CeraVe. I don't like it used neat or as a base, but just a little bit in something else has a nice soothing feel to it.
Why do you like the CeraVe so much? |

I would guess that it is the ALA. I use this in a serum concoction I make and it gives it a rotten egg kind of smell. I add a few drops of Helichrysum EO to it and it tones down the smell a lot.

Hi Molly,
It feels absorbed into my skin & doesn't just sit on top of it. It leaves my dry skin feeling moist but not waxy. |

Hi Michelle,
YUP - You are absolutely correct...ALA is the 'rotten egg' instigator. Hannah responded (very promptly) and said that the ALA was the culprit reacting with the cream and "releasing SH(?)", but it does not affect the stability of the active if the smell is not too bad. I have some Rose Hip Seed oil on order so that will definately be added.
Glad 'we' solved the mystery. Thanks everyone for your replies

ALA [Alpha-lipoic Acid] is bright yellow and the 'stench' comes from the sulfur base.
You are all such awesome sleuths!
Good job!

Soccermom, my impression was not to mix acids & peptides, because a certain pH level will inactivate the action of the peptides. Since I can't remember what pH level, and don't own any pH strips, I simply never mix the two or apply the two within 4-6 hours of each other. Some people say acids (like, say, l-ascorbic) can leave an acidic residue on/in the skin for up to 24 hours.
Markey? Is this generally the rule...no acids w/ peptides, or am I just confused? |

I have also found that CoQ10 doesn't smell all that great either. And definitly adding ALA and CoQ10 together is rather aromatic. |
