I'm going to be in South Beach, Florida at the end of May with my husband who is attending a conference. Once he's done, we want to stay an extra 2 days, but want to see another part of Florida. Neither of us has been to Florida before, so we're having a hard time deciding where to go.
We're flying out of the Miami airport, so we don't want to have to drive too far.
Any recommendations for cities and hotels would really be appreciated. Or, if you know of a hotel/inn with a great spa, well, that would be perfect.
Thank you! |

Hi Tam!
If you like to party, or like to people watch, or just want to see one of the few historic cities in Florida, I say head down to Key West. It is really laid back compared to Miami. It's a little touristy, but still fun. There are lots of characters out and about. At dusk, everyone goes to the town square to watch the sunset. It's hilarious because everyone applauds when the sun goes down! (not too many places to see an ocean sunset on the East Coast). If you like funky, go to Blue Heaven Restaurant. My favorite!
It takes about 3 1/2 hours to get there on a weekday. I don't know about spas, but there are some great B&Bs there. I saw one online where you can rent a cute little apartment with its own private deck w/ hot tub. It would be cheap in May.
Also, while in Southbeach: If you like very flirtatious young Italian waiters, you must go to this italian restaurant on Espanola Way. I don't know the name, but it is between Drexel & Washington Aves., on the North Side of the street. You'll feel like you are in Italy, and the food is to die for!
Another good restaurant is Costas Opa. I have only been to their other location up in Hollywood, but it's great Greek food, cute Greek waiters, and really lively atmosphere! |

Thank you Bee! That sounds like a lot of fun! I'm not too keen on the 3.5 hour drive, but Key West sounds too good to miss. |

I agree with Bee. Driving down to Keywest is nice. I loved driving over Seven Mile bridge. |

Hey tam! I posted a thread a week or so back that I'm going to Key West the first week in June. I don't suppose you'll still be there around that time? We're staying June 2nd in Islamorada which is supposed to be awesome. It's about half way down the keys so not nearly as far as Key West. We'll then be in KW from the 3rd through the 9th. It'll just be my bf and me so you're welcome to come meet up with us! I can't wait to make the drive down the keys. It looks amazing. I have been to KW twice before but only for a day each time (cruise stop) and ever since we've been dying to go back! |

You are so sweet Tamgirl!! Thank you for the invitation... it would have been fabulous to meet up with another couple. Unfortunately, my husband's conference ends on the evening of the 2nd, so we aren't free until the 3rd.
We were kind of looking at Naples, but Islamorada looks wonderful! It seems like a good compromise since the Keys are so much further. Thank you for that suggestion.
In any case, have a FANTASTIC trip! |

You too tam! By the way, I'm not sure if you've ever watch the HGTV dream home special they do every year, but the 2008 home is being built in Islamorada! My bf and I plan to try and find it while we're there. We'd like to get a good look at the progress, you know, since we'll be moving into it soon. |
