hello all you lovely aussie ladies (or anyone else who has lived in sydney)
I'm considering spending a semester in sydney for school, and wondering if it's financially feasible on top of my outrageous tuition (have to continue paying my home school). Can anyone fill me in on ease of finding affordable housing/ or just general advice? Thanks so much!

Do you have any idea where you will be going to school in Sydney?

Housing market in Sydney is pretty tight at the moment so rent is quite high in the sought after areas. It really depends on the area where you want to live and whether you want to share a flat.
There are stories in the press that desperate tenants are offering landlords more than the advertised rent to secure a property.

One bedroom flats cost anywhere from A$150 to A$400 per week and there is of the luxurious end of the spectrum. Housing near universities are generally sought after too. You can get an idea of the housing cost by going to the following sites:www.domain.com.au orwww.realestate.com.au.

Transportation is not cheap. I don't know what the transport costs is where you live. I costs me about A$23 a week by train going to where I work and it is only a 17 minute ride. But if you are a student and you have a student card, you get subsidised travel, I think it is half price.

Food - A loaf of bread starts from about A$2 (the supermarket generic brand) and 1 carton of full cream milk (1 litre) about A$1.90.

HTH

Im in South Australia but ive heard Sydney's cost of housing is heaps high. And people are having trouble getting places, like ninetynine said, people are offering more than the asking price...not fair on those of us who cant afford to offer more Confused Its getting as bad in SA too,not just Sydney.

Also you dont get much for your money either in sydney.e.g the town i live in you can get a new house for $250 a week!, in sydney you'd probably get a dump!

yes, I'm coming from new york so this isn't all that bad for me. I would be going to the university of sydney law school -- I've got someone to share a flat with (if we can both get into the program) and I'm not all that picky so it sounds like it at least won't be any worse than I have it here! thanks!!

Sydney has the highest cost of living in Australia - though compared to New York its probably cheap! One thing i would stock up on is skincare/make up before you come. Prices are expensive here and alot of the companies dont stock the full range and colours of the products, and alot of the brands you read about on here aren't even in Australia. You will be lucky though you can get family/friends to post items to you as alot of places dont send international.

Waffle, you should check out craigslist.org. You might get an idea of what's available and the ads that post pics are always helpful. Just a suggestion.

Is it common for rent to be paid weekly rather than monthly in Sydney? I took a quick look at craigslist and noticed that most ads post rent weekly. At first I was like "$450 per month? That's cheap! Especially for a place right on the beach!" but then I realized it was advertised by the week.

You can choose to pay fortnightly or monthly as most companies pay their staff fortnightly or monthly. Some casuals are paid weekly so I think this is just to help them pay their essentials eg you don't have to pay a whole month's rent in advance if you're on weekly pay.

You just need to work it out with the agent.

I had no idea there was craigslist in australia! I'm from the bay area where craiglist started, so that's really bizarre to me!
sounds like sydney really is expensive, but I don't think it's going to stop me from going. My friend and I will probably rent something tiny and overpriced near the beach -- I hope!

I live in Sydney & generally speaking it is a very expensive place to live! Sad But there is a fair bit of accommodation available near & around The University of Sydney (i.e. near the suburb Redfern), for international/interstate students that is reasonably priced...maybe check this out?

I think you will have to be careful about which area of Redfern though. Some areas are pretty rough. How about Camperdown and Broadway (rent might be a bit high here).
