My daughter's nanny feels quite free to tell me things and the other day she told me I need to start taking care of my nails. I never get manicures and admit that my nails don't look great -- the nanny thinks this is unprofessional and I guess I can't disagree.

My problem is that I think some of my nails grow funny -- if you look at them straight on at eye level, some of them tend to bend down in the center. It's almost like the nail bed is warped.

Do you think there is anyway this can be changed or should I just keep them very short and only used nude polish?

They have a cup like shape? Unless your nails have been damaged by acrylic or something the shape your nails are now is probably inherant to the nail bed and there isnt much you can do about them. Just keep the cuticles tidy, the ends filed and they will look just as groomed as long nails.

You can wear any color polish on short nails if you choose, dark polish actually usually looks better on short nails.

VMP, I had this problem for years and thought it came with my territory. Yet lo and behold I started getting professional manicures and now all my nails are perfect, so I have to assume that it had something to do with the way I cut my nails myself. Since I love talking to my manicurist, I dont' really watch what she does differently, but she surely does something. HTH

If I'm reading your description correctly, I think I have/had a similar problem. A few years ago I concluded that the oddities in my nail shape were caused or exacerbated by lots of typing. (For instance, the nail on my right thumb bent inward on the left side, I'm thinking from my hitting the space bar.)

Anyway, I've had good luck with keeping my nails properly trimmed and wearing nail polish to strengthen them and keep them from warping further. Also, buffing them to smooth out the shallower ridges has made them look better overall and de-emphasize any flaws.

I never thought that it could be from something like typing, which I do all day long.

I am going to try getting regular manicures as ExistentialLady said that helped her.

My mom and sister have a similar type of problem. But their nail beds don't curve inwards, rather, they are perfectly flat, and therefore, fragile and prone to tearing, etc. The best thing they've found is to nourish the nailbeds (cuticle oil of some kind) and using nail polish on a regular basis sorta helps "bend" the nail down into a normal curved shape. HTH.

My nails are a bit misshapen/warped from my biting days. I file them straight across (this has done miracles, to reduce splits and breaks on my nails) and they look a little square-ish. I started out using light colors and as my nails shaped up, I've moved on to darker colors.
