The time has come for me to register the names of my two korat kittens (both girls).

Although we actually have selected their names already, we have to give a second choice in case the first is unavailable (highly unlikely)

So, I need to know the Thai equivalent of the following so I can see what sounds nice.. Laughing

dewdrop

storm cloud

jade

hot water bottle (stop laughing)

belly band (maybe there is no Thai word for this...there is a Japanese one)

Thanks!!

What is a Korat kitten?

dewdrop = yod (drop) nam kang (dew)

storm cloud = make (cloud) payu (storm)

jade = yok

hot water bottle = katik (bottle) nam (water) ron (hot)

belly band = yang (band as in rubberband) tong (belly) ==> Just have to add that you can say the words but most people will just give you a blank look as that makes no sense to me and I'm sure to them, too.

thank you bkkgirl!

Korats (pronunced Ko-raht) are a breed from Thailand (northern Thailand to be exact). I believe in Thailand they are usually called SI SAWAT.

In ancient Thailand it was considered to be a good luck cat. Poets once wrote that their "eyes shine like dewdrops on a lotus leaf" and that their coat has "roots like clouds and tips like silver" As these kittens get older their eyes will change to a beautifully haunting jade green.

I think I will make my back-up names "makepayu" (bkkgirl how would I pronunce this correctly in Thai) and "dewdrop"

Here is a pic of the litter my babies are in, sorry it is a bit big (I love the cheeky one!)

Oh yes, of course, I know what Maew Si Sawad is. Very Happy

Makepayu is pronounced like make (just like you would say to make something but the tone is only slightly up not all the way up like the word 'make' in English). Remember that Thai is a tonal language and it got 5 tones. This will be in the 3rd tone, so right in the middle. The word 'make' in English is the 4th tone.

Pa is the 1st tone which is completely flat. This is pronounced with the long a sound as in ah.

Yu is the 4th tone, so it got the same tone as the word 'make' in English. You would pronounce it like the short U sound like instead of pronouncing it like the word 'you' which is the long U sound, you shorten it to just Yu.

If you need to call me to hear how it is pronounced exactly, you can PM me and I'll give you my phone number.

These kitties are adorable! I always like the looks of the Si Sawad cats. I actually thought they're the same as the Siamese cats, no?

OOOH! They are SOOO cute! I just adopted a new kitten (cat, I call him kitten because he's SO small but he's a year and a half old already) from the animal welfare two days go. I named him Bingo!
Which two of these kittens are yours?

AH! They are so beautiful! Tiger _ Tim, keep us posted as to how they turn out, character - wise. I'm interested in Korats. They have one layer of fur only, so are less allergy - creating. I hear they are tremendously characterful! Congratulations! Very Happy

I'm more of a dog lover, but I must say these kitties are really cute, and they have such an alert expression on their faces. They do have beautiful eyes.
