I keep seeing people saying that a certain product has done nothing for them and it got me thinking. Is there a limit to how much skin improvement or visible change (for the better) one can achieve?
I assume that many here have good or even very good skin whether it is genes or good skincare habits. But, when someone already is "there" (lucky devils), what additional change can they see? In such a case, aren't all these products just maintenance and aging prevention? |

I believe that's true. And I think that's why some people will see drastic results & some see none at all.
For instance, I have been using a lot of anti-aging products for 3-4 years now. If I use something new, I'm less likely to see results than someone who hasn't been using anti-aging products.
Of course, there are individual differences, too - but I really believe that there is a 'limit' to how much improvement you can make. Does that mean I'll stop trying? No. |

Exactly kim. I don't mean that people should stop trying promising products, after all we also try to delay aging but I'm trying to imagine someone with perfect skin and basically nothing to "fix". In my mind, someone like that will not see any change except for the worse (allergy, breakouts and such) or just maintain the status quo. In the latter case it seems to me it would be very hard to judge if a product does anything much because one has maximized their skin potential. |

If I had perfect skin, I think I would just use a mild cleanser, a mild chemical exfoliant, an antioxidant, something to prevent collagen loss, and a good moisturizer.
As I typed that, I had to chuckle - because that's what I use now. LOL! I stopped using all of the 'major' stuff - mostly because I had seen results - and it gets tiresome after awhile trying to make time for all of that skincare, LOL! |

I know for a fact we can't change our pore size, only improve the texture and the look. That is only one example I can think of on what products can't do. |

If I had perfect skin (which will never happen - makes me sad ) I'd probably be afraid of trying new, radical things. In my fantasies when I try to imagine it, I think I'd probably be afraid of causing any damage. |

I think the reason there may be a limit is that the topical improvement limit gets reached.
Then there is the internal, hormonal, emotional, nutritional components which often get forgotten and that's where the rest of it needs to come from. Oh, and add exercising and sweating.
But for anyone who is busy, attending to all the areas can be overwhelming.

by the sounds of it...most of the members change their products weekly trying new things!!
I would still be on the search for prevention reasons if i had perfect skin. |

yeahyeah you asking me? If I use the same set of products for a year or years, definitely.
In the past year I simply don't let that happen because I use different products on different days so I haven't noticed skin "resistance" |

I am currently using up my supplies but my staples are CP'S & Apeel correct & the BQ. I am not investing in any more stuff (unless it miraculously restores my skin to its teen condition). |

lol, different products on differnt days...how do u remember which products to use then!? u write them down in ur diary!
well, i was reading somewhere that ur skin can get used to the products and its not as effective...shame cos then we all have to spend more and more on skin care products. but saying that, i have noticed that sometimes, my murad spot treatment doesnt seem to work then sometimes it does...strange |

Good question. I think there is a limit and then we have to maintain our results. |

Interesting subject. It reminds me of years ago after the birth of my children, I started to work out with weights and saw some drastic changes in my body. Years later, I had reached a plateau as to how much better things could get as far as firming, etc.
It think its the same as our skin. Now in my 50s, I think I have reached the limit as to how good my skin can get, short of cosmetic surgery. Skin care can only do so much after all. I have found what works for me at the moment is CPs, Janson Beckett, Microdermabrasion cloth, oils. Maybe in a few years I will have to try something new. Who knows what they will come up with by then. Until then, I'll stick with what works and be satisfied with the results.
With that said, I still get a little weak in the knees when a read a really good review and for a moment, want to cave in and try it. |

LOL, I don't write it in a diary. I just remember what I use one day and use something else the day after and so on. I'm not that anal.
I don't think I'm that different about skin getting used to products. I think most people notice after a long time that the product seems to have lesser impact. It's true for shampoos and even drugs.
And you're right, it means we have to continue to spend $ on new products but lets admit something here - it's FUN, lol. There's a certain promise and rush in a new product |

yeah! it is fun to get a parcel and ripping it open to try the new products!
...but i was reading the papers, i think, and this psycologist or someone said that these materialistic things are kinda bad for ur self esteem and self worth. cos they promise u "clear skin" "wrinkle free" etc etc, but in fact they dont. so the higher the hopes, the lower u fall when they dont work
this the reason why i want LOTS and LOTS of money |

I rarely change my products - but I sometimes change the way in which I use them. Meaning that I apply them more or less often, etc. |

ROFL.
Interesting point about the promises companies make. I agree that most products are trash and not worth the money but there actually are good products out there that do deliver. I've found quite a few products this year that have made a great difference in my skin. Unfortunately, you have to kiss a thousand frogs until you find that one prince |

I am as guilty as anyone of changing products very often but I think that we have to give time for products to work but as well let our skin breathe and not layer it |

I am at a crossroads right now! I have tried every high end product and more. I am 52 I take my Greens Multi vitamins and minerals, flax seed oil daily, plus eating very healthy and exercising every day and my skin looks no different. Maybe this is as good as it's going to get? I really don't know but I am like many others, the minute I hear of something that could be the Holy Grail I am all over it!! |

I don't believe that your skin gets used to a product. Seasons changes and we get older and our skin changes and we have to adopt and always searching for that perfect product.
Also, I think advertising can influence our choices. |

That used to be true for me too - beforeI found this and other skinboards. I don't buy anything anymore without research and user's reviews. I read as many experiences as possible until I get a "sense" of "this products sounds good/or not" and it has proved to be a very good predictor most of the time. |

I have many impections on my skin but all I wish is there is something can keep me from aging one more day. If I can look like today in 20 years I would be rather happy. |

Has any of you seen the Oprah show with the Dove women?
One woman was asian and 40 years old looking about 25.
There was a 50+ woman who also looked a lot less but the most amazing woman there was a black woman - 70 years old. I've never in my entire life, seen something like that.
The woman looked between 45-50!!! And, she didn't look like she had any surgery. She looked completely natural - not one line on her entire face and that includes her eyes even while smiling. No sag, no eyebags - nothing! And not only that, her whole body didn't look like an old woman's and her skin on her body too looked young and firm. Her neck was also young. Everybody seemed stunned. I think Oprah felt bad next to her because she looked younger than her, lol. The woman said she always moisturises her face.
Seriously, that woman is a miracle of nature! |
