I know you all are suckers for cute pet stories, so I just had to post this. The other night a small cat, about 8-9 mos. old, walked into SO's back yard and right up to his 90 lb. German Shepard. (We live in a neighborhood that seems to have a greater than average drop-off rate of pets that are no longer wanted.) Subsequently the pair has fallen in love and have become inseperable. The GSD thinks it has a "pet" and the cat has the ultimate protector. Unfortunately this little cat is going to have kittens soon, so I suspect this will end the love affair. My SO who supposedly doesn't like cats insisted she went to the vet for a check-up and made her a little bed. It's the sweetest thing, I'm about to OD on cuteness. I'll try to post some pics later. |

Thank you so much for posting. This gives me so much hope. I would love to have a dog (german shepherd/english sheepdog/ husky) but I am so worried how it would go with my cat, who rules the house. I've heard some anectodal evidence that german shepherds are good with cats. Why do you think that they'll stop being friends once the cat has the kittens?
All the best,
Cat |

My cats & dogs have always been friends. I used to have a big cat (18 lbs!) that would sleep on top of my Irish Setter. One of my cats chased one of the dogs down the hall one day - I was laughing so hard I couldn't even yell at the cat.
When first introducing them, it helps if at least one of them is fairly young. But it's not a requirement - I just usually make sure the cats have a dog-safe place to escape to. |

That is a really sweet story! I'd love to see pictures. It's funny because you do always think that dogs and cats don't get along and you always hear stories about them becoming friends. One of the guys I work with got a kitten a while back and she and their dog have become best buddies. |

I have a friend with a Mastiff and her cats sleep on top of him all the time. He just loves kittens too - he lets them sleep on top of him also. |

My cats and dogs have always gotten along. Whether introducing same species or opposite species, it is best to keep them separate (behind closed doors) until the hissing and/or whining has stopped. Let them stiff under the door. Eventually they will get used to each other (although be careful to watch after they are allowed direct contact and provide safe areas for escape). It looks like this pair found companionship without human assistance--it must be a match made in heaven. Hope they are allowed to stay together as buddies. I look forward to seeing some pics. |

That is adorable! Thanks so much for sharing! Maybe the dog will think he's the "father"....and protect the kitty and her babies! (Not unheard of...) Your SO sounds like a sweetie too! Please post pics! |

Ah, too cute! Definitely post some pics! This sounds like the kitten we adopted when I was younger. Our Irish Setter started mothering him and would let him suck on her neck and nipples. They would play so well together and became best buddies. In fact he imprinted after her. (For example she would paw at her water dish whenever she was hungry so the cat has always "air" pawed at his dish whenever he gets a drink of water.) |

That is sooo sweet!
I have 2 cats/2 dogs and for the most part they related UNTIL the young dog (under 2yrs) gets too excited over the cats then the trouble starts. |
