Well, I'm off on a work trip for the next three days. Heading off down south. Brrrr!

I've been trying to pack this afternoon and I'm quite proud of my effort. I've pretty much packed samples as far as my skincare is concerned Laughing I don't think I have ever traveled this light before! Mind you I've packed plenty of clothes to deal with the (relative) cold temperatures. But all I have in terms of skincare is this tiny little makeup bag Very Happy I even have a tiny 5mL toothpaste tube and a collapsable toothbrush Laughing Embarassed

Just curious as to what you guys pack when you travel? Particularily when you go on short trips. I know my mum has pretty much a separate bag that houses her skincare, makeup, hair products and tools. She just packs whatever she normally uses - full sizes and all!

Well, it's past 1am here and I need to get up bright and early. Nite all, "see" you in a few days.

I'm the queen of packers! Laughing I pack everything! My other half goes mad, few weeks ago we went to Spain and they put this huge orange sticker on my case which said HEAVY....he was not impressed!

We've just bought a house in Spain and I was having furniture shipped over from England and in one box I secretly packed loads of gatineau and decleor stuff, hairproducts etc. I thought if I could unpack it without him knowing I'd get away with it.

Guess which box was the first one he opened...mmmm you guessed it Brick wall he was furious that he'd paid shipping for a box full my anti ageing products when I could of put them in a case, we spent the next day not talking!!!! haha....good job he didnt open the one with the hairdryer in!!!!

What's that???? Think

This girlie always over-packs, no matter where she goes! Always! I assume that I will wear or need more, and end-up relying on half of what I actually bring.

Case in point: I was just away for 16 days in southern Ontario. My main suitcase felt like I'd packed ... a bowling ball collection. Your's truly ended preferring to wear her cut-off denim shorts, and a few t-shirts.

Did I buy anything while away? Nope. Came home with a new dress and a couple of little things.

When going away for a few days, I'm normally quite good at travelling light. I have a set of small plastic bottles from Redken which I fill with shampoo, conditioner and cleanser, and that already helps! I also try to pack clothes that can be worn together in different combinations, and most of the time I only bring one pair of shoes.

But I still bring e.g. my flat iron for my hair Embarassed

Hey Mabsy
I know that feeling - feeling accomplished that we are all prepared for the WORK trip and yet the bags are not bulging with bulging cosmetic and skincare pouches. These days, whenever I receive some samples from EDS, I stash them up for these trips - especially cleansers and moisturizers - can you imagine bringing a big bottle of Murad Pom Energizing Cleanser just for 2 days...? Also, I found makeup wipes really handy - flat and light.

I only over pack when I travel with my other half - he can do all the carrying...he he he.

Have a good trip

I just take nearly everything that I own and then end up wearing not even half of it.I always say I'm going to make a list of what I always end up wearing and just take that. But I never do. Being English as well, we never trust the weather so we have to take coats, jumpers etc even if it is to spain in the height of the summer. Luckily or not I do not have that many clothes. My daughter is a nightmare and packs about 20 t-shirts 10 pairs of jeans, 10 pairs of shoes etc. Infact she's going away for a week tomorrow with a friend and her family and can only take 1 smallish case. I can't wait to see how she copes. Lordy will the air be blue tonight. Rolling Eyes

oh yeah traveling, always reminds the night before when the packing weeps. Seems like i just want to take everything except the kitchen sink.
As Nemi says, I do coordinate my cloths that i can reuse them with others.
Ziplock bags comes in handy for our skin care stuff.

Well, I'm back! And I must say that I'm pretty proud of my packing effort. EDS samples kept my skin happy and I finally got to try some of the products I've been meaning to try. Two birds with one stone! Razz I even packed well with the clothes situation as well. Wore exactly everything I had packed and did not run out of things to wear. Absolute perfection! Where's the gloating emoticon when you need one?! Smile Mind you, it took *ages* for me to plan my wardrobe and pack. So perhaps it would have just been smarter to pack as usual and save a few hours on the packing Embarassed

I must say that I forgot to pack one thing.... An umbrella!!!! Mad Of course it hasn't rained there for ages but true to form it started the day after I arrived Rolling Eyes

Loopys right, we can't rely on the weather so have to pack for every possible climate. That's my excuse anyway. I have found that those little travel bottles are great for decanting shampoos and cleanser which then means more room for makeup and skincare - kind of defeats the object Confused

But I have a friend who is going away for 7 days and she has packed 14 towels and 24 cans of coke. Don't know how dirty she is expecting to get or she is visiting somewhere on earth where you can't buy coke! but even I thought that was going too far.

totally agree! i'm not sure if any of you have been to new zealand, but think of a couple of finger shaped islands in the middle of some of the worst weather in the world (more commonly known as the roaring 40s) and that's us! the weather here is VERY (and i mean VERY) changeable so you never know what it'll be like! not like those of you that live on massive land masses (USA, Canada) or in nice protected places (Brisbane esp) *where is the jealousy icon when you need it* so we have to pack well!
needless to say, with all my shorts, trousers, wet-weather gear, arctic gear, seal-skin boots, tank tops, bikinis, sunscreen, ear-muffs and so on, there's not a lot of room for anything else! i try to pack lite but it just never works *wail!* i keep thinking, do i need 10 t-shirts for one weekend? you just never know, what if i run into someone i know, i have to be looking good - that automatically doubles your packing! kiwiboy thinks i am nuts, but hey, he definitely appreciates it when i look good!!!

oh and i was only joking about the seal-skin boots, i am an animal lover!

OMG!!!!!!!! Shock Shock Shock

I'm in Peru at the moment and until about 10 minutes ago I was pretty damn proud of how lightly I have packed. I have brought down my skincare to the bare minimum (and in sample sizes) and have no makeup other than MMU, blush, eyeliner and mascara. One would think that this is a good thing...

I just looked in the mirror ten minutes ago and I had a red rash on my chin and up to the nose. A few minutes later it has spread to my cheeks as well and over my nose and is VERY visible. Of course, the first consideration is "OMG, what is it and is it an indication of something more serious", followed by "%*&%!!! I have to speak in front of about 1000 people on Thursday and chances are I'll look rather 'interesting'". I am taking malaria meds which make you sensitive to the sun, but I made sure I wore 50++ sunblock today. So, it's 1:30am and I'm sitting here and wishing that I had packed all sorts of things that I could potentially put on my skin to calm this down (some Decleor would be nice about now...). So, I definitely will not be packing light in the future.

Depends on where I'm going, for what, and the weather.
I usually over-pack, especially on vacation, where I like to be prepared for any interesting opportunity that comes up. That goes double if golf's on the agenda.
On the other hand, I once made a 1-week business trip to France with just a carryon bag and a briefcase, but it was summer (smaller, lighter clothes), and I'd been to the hotel. I knew the "bathroom amenities" were excellent (hairdryer, and fine shampoo, facial and body soaps, and lotions), and a fairly inexpensive Chinese laundry and super beauty salon were in walking distance. Biggest challenge was limiting my shoes.

Haha let's see - according to my family, nope I don't at all Rolling Eyes

The skincare part isn't that much of an issue as I do take only samples of my skincare stuff... But it's the clothes, shoes and entertainment materials that always gets to me.

So there I am thinking along the lines of packing more sets of clothes in case of any situations and like 4 pairs of shoes (heels, mules, sneakers, sandals)... Not to mention I never go traveling without at least 2 books & my ipod loaded with music...

And before I know it the suitcase is full and I have to clear stuff out so that I have spare space for "shopping goodies" sigh... But sad to say most times I just end up bringing another spare bag along Bad Grin

Oh Mabsy, so sorry about your rash! Hope that it was just a temporary reaction and has cleared up!

DOn't let that put you off packing light, though. I am a one bagger and have traveled all over the world for as much as a month at a time with carryon luggage only.

As far as the "liquids and gels" challenge, I too often use my EDS samples when I travel, but I never use anything for the first time when traveling. Who wants to have an untoward reaction while on the road? I do decant my favorites into tiny jars and clamshell containers. And I always bring a soothing item (I like Cellularskin-rx's calming cream) and a good concealer (Cle de Peau is my fave) just in case.

By the way, I just got back from China, and I had 19 different items in my little baggie--the largest items were my Anthelios sunscreen and my travel sized toothpaste.

Some day I'm gonna write a makeup and skincare friendly how-to on light travel for women. Most of the "travel light" gurus just say--skip makeup and skin care. Hah--no way!!! And you don't have to, if you plan ahead a little.

Thank you, it seems to have cleared up though it was quite scary for a few hours. The next day it was lighter (and easily covered by MMU) and now it's gone. The only problem is that my skin is flaking like crazy. I never expected this place to be so dry (in comparison to back home). I'm drinking so much water here that my bladder can barely keep up Laughing Laughing

So, perhaps, this was not a case of packing light being the wrong thing to do, but rather a case of uninformed packing Rolling Eyes I should have checked out the humidity and also the effects of the malaria tablets before I packed my skincare.

Mabsy, I hope everything ends well with your travel mishaps!
Flitcraft, that sounds like something i would be interested in - the Traveling-light-with-cosmetics theme.

I pare everything way down for travel, and aspire to be a one-bagger myself. I wear DeVita Sunblock, which doubles as moisturizer; use Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, a solid cream foundation which comes in a tiny jar and doubles as concealer (when traveling only); use Bobbi Brown pot rouge that can be applied with a finger and used also as lipstick so I don't need makeup brushes; carry only one quad of Chanel eyeshadow that I can apply with my fingers; and use Clinique Lash Power mascara which doesn't smudge or flake and comes off with warm water so no separate remover needed. My cleanser, BioNova, removes everything. Just Green Cream and a vial of C+E ferulic as treatments. A tiny extra pot filled with CosMedix Rescue Cream doubles as mask, extra moisture on a plane, and as lip moisturizer. Toothpowder, brush and floss.

Comfortable shoes and a pair of kitten heel boots, jeans, black pants, a cashmere sweater/cami's and a black velvet jacket and black pashmina and a bright silk scarf, along with a nightie and shorts/T for yoga, lounging in the room or the beach. I don't mind wearing the same thing every day as long as I have clean undies!

Hairdryer/small flatiron/converters and shampoo and a leave-in conditioner, brush and widetooth comb. Prescription meds in their original bottles and written Rx for additional refills if detained somewhere. Contact solutions + extra pair. Water filtration bottle so i don't have to buy bottled. Silk undies that can be washed/dried overnite. Oh, and my silk travel pillow. You never know what the hotel pillow will be like - I don't always get to stay at the Hilton - heh, more like SpaceAvailable in BFE!!!

Have I missed anything? What would you add/subtract?
