I have spent a fair amount of time researching AHA products available outside a physicians office. Given that Ph plays as important a role as the % of AHA in collagen production, is there any value in daily use. Most OTC products, despite the % have a Ph of 4. I understand that to be moisturizing only.
Please advise me... I await the experts. I have also been toying with the idea of THA Latte. |

You are right that for AHA to function optimally as exfoliants, the products have a final pH value between 3 and 4. A lower pH will also work, but dipping below a pH of 3 tends to be too irritating for skin. And if pH value rises over 4 then the exfoliant becomes ineffective.
This is what AHA can do for your skin:
AHAs exfoliate, increase the thickness of skin & encourage new collagen formation. While it is true that AHAs exfoliate, contributing to softer more even-toned skin, the clinical effects of AHAs in lessening the appearance of wrinkles and sun damage are in part due to increased skin thickness and new collagen formation.
AHAs treat a number of skin conditions. AHAs are well known for the treatment of various dermatological conditions including acne, dry skin, clogged pores, hyperpigmentation (brown/dark spot or blotches) and irregular pigmentation (uneven skin tone) associated with pregnancy, hormonal changes and the use of birth control pills, among other things.
AHAs give visible results against the appearance of lines, creases, wrinkles & sun damage. Used in a daily skin care regime, AHAs will reduce and improve the visual signs of aging and sun damage. The appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pore size will be reduced; skin’s texture will be smoothed; clarity, firmness, and even skin tone will emerge. An all-over healthy glow, radiance, suppleness and smoothness will appear. |

iaimei,
Thank you for that informative reply. To be certain I understand:
An AHA product with a ph of 3-4 IS EFFECTIVE as an exfoliant and collagen builder.
If so- what percentage of acid(glycolic?) supports those results? 10-15-20%? Used daily?
Product recommendations are welcome.Thanks |

IMO, for home use you should stick with between 8% - 15%, any higher better be used under supervision of a licensed aesthetician or physician.
Product wise, I used and liked Reversa. You can check it out at:

Once again, thank you. I had not heard of this product line. Originally I was looking at the AlPHA HYDROX line, which has a product of 12% AHA and a Ph of 3.7 |

The higher the pH, the less 'free acid' available to the skin. For instance, at a pH of 3.7, an AHA advertised as 12%, might only have a true acid value of 8% - but one with a pH of 2.0 might have a true acid value much closer to the advertised % of 12.
I've used AHA's with a pH of around 2.0 for 2-3 years now - I don't get any irritation as long as I don't use too high of a percentage. I've also done peels at home with AHA's of 30-40%. It can be done, but you MUST be very careful & always follow the directions. Some people try to leave it on too long at first, thinking "Oh, it won't hurt" - only to find out that it does indeed hurt. Right now, I use a 4% product every other day & that works well as a 'maintenance' for me.
Diana Yvonne has some good info about acids on her website:

Kim, May I ask what products you are using with a Ph of 2-2.5? I have sensative skin, though I have used glycolic pads 10-20% with a Ph of 4 daily with NO reaction. I don't want to do an "at home peel" because I'm afraid. |

I use my own products presently, but Diana Yvonne carries the Profession Solutions brand & I've also used those. The pH of the PS brand is about 1.9 - I know they have a 10% lactic acid product with that pH. |
