Hi, this is the first time I've posted anything but have been enjoying reading all the posts! Anyway the following is something that's been bothering me...

Does anyone know if using an oxidised c serum can actually damage your skin?
Little bit concerned as I read something recently that said it can be harmful and cause more damage to your skin! Not good, especially considering the price.
Been using Skinceuticals serum 20 which has been going ok but am getting worried about using it now it's turned a very dark orange/brown colour!

Not to worry: this is the nature of vit. C products. Unless you've been storing your product without tightly closing it, in extreme heat or cold, or in direct sunlight, your product should be a-okay!

One of my vitamin C serums did turn to a very dark orange color but I figured out that there was a crack in the little squeezy thingy so air was getting into it.

As Caspers Mum said, no problems there but it probably won't be as effective as it is supposed to be.

Thank you both for your replies! Good to hear it's ok, must admit I was a little worried that the product i was applying to improve and prevent ageing may actually be causing more damage!
I have read about the clear c serums (think Obagi might be one of them) that don't oxidise, wondering if may be better?
Anyway will carry on with the Skinceuticals for now....

This is not what I thought....I had read that C when it turns orangey/brown is oxidized and totally loses its efficacy. Also that once it becomes oxidized can actually be a pro-oxidant and foster creation of free radicals instead of "soaking them up". I thought that the color change is the sign that the product has gone "bad".

Abejita, calling Abejita. Where are you? Liz will know. Meanwhile, I'll try to look up the info and post on it.

Embarassed Did I hear my name???

I emailed SkinC awhile back to ask what the shelf life was on their C products. They said it was about a year from opening. She said that the serum would turn a dark amber, kind of like strong tea after about a year. She said that it can still be used, but they can no longer guarantee the pontency, but the loss should be fairly miniscule.

My advice is that if you bought it from someone and it wasn't very very light colored to begin with, I wouldn't buy from them again because they sold you old product. The reason that I mention this is because I am on my second or third bottle of SkinC serum and I have never gotten to that dark amber stage because the bottles that I start off with are always very fresh. It usually takes me about six or seven months to finish off one bottle.

Liz
