Do you use the same strips that use to test urine?

Also, what ranges do you want your products to be at - around 5-5.5? How important is this?

Hi Mommydearest, one of the all-time great threads on this forum [at least, IMHO] that contains all you need to know about PH balance, wait times and how to test...This is one of the threads I printed and saved for future reference.

It is very difficult to test the pH of a cleanser using regular pH test strips, as the surfactant properties of the cleanser can give you a false pH reading. The only way to accurately test the pH of a cleanser or soap is to make a 1% solution in distilled water & test that with a pH meter.

Well that is more work than I am willing to do. Does it matter that much then if you test the toner and that is balanced?

WOW, Tangal deserves some sort of award for that thread!

I don't really think it's necessary to test your cleanser. Unless it is really high in harshe detergents (high on the list) and not buffered with some sort of acid. You figure you will be using one little drop of cleanser with a bunch of water. I would be more concerned if it was a leave-on product.

So how do you test the leave on products and cleansers with acids?

Apply it to the skin, squeeze a drop onto the litmus paper or dip the paper into the product?

TIA Smile

Would calling the 1-800 numbers usually listed on the products be easier than doing the test yourself? I often call the numbers to ask for the translation of expiry date codings and I find its pretty easy to get through.

Are they free phone?

I've never called the numbers cos Im not sure how much they charge for international calls, but I just bought some litmus paper from ebay (they're quite expensive!) so I wont have to email the CS or be really annoying and asking all you EDS girls here Wink

Interesting, I never tested it. But someday I may take my stuff to the lab and measure the PH by a PH meter.

I believe all 1-800 numbers are free. On your product pacakge usually say where the product is made or who is distributing it. They often give you the number that is regional or local to where you purchase the product. I just thought calling them up would save you the trouble of testing it yourself. I am too lazy anyway.

Thanks so much for the link! VERY informative! It looks like I may need to change my cleanser to better suit my acne-prone skin.
