i dont go to sleep till about 2/3am but im still getting 8+ hours of sleep. i want to sleep earlier but im just not tired.
i keep hearing everyone saying that you should have a good night's sleep and that sleeping early is good for your skin.
is this really true??? |

Some people say the prime time for skin to recover at night is between 11pm and 4am. I don't know if there is any scientific reasons behind it. But as long as you get enough sleep, not necessarily at certain hours, I think you'll be OK. |

It is true that if u sleep early say from 11pm till next morning, it'll do your skin good. 11pm-4am is the prime time for your skin to repair and regenerate. It not only does your skin good but also your body and overall health too. Don't u notice that if u sleep late, you eye circles are more worse? Or your skin lack that glow if u stay up late? U seem to look more worn out if u sleep late even though u have 8hrs of sleep. Well, at least that's for myself...don't know about others. |

It seems to help for my skin to clear up and recover better if I get to bed early. |

My grand mother always said that the beauty sleep is from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. These hours are the most important for skin regeneration. All other hours are also good for a health, but beauty hours 9-12. I have never tried it, because I usually go to bed very late (I am nihgt owl)and even if I want to try, it will never work, because I just don't want to sleep at that early time. |

staying up late, a couple months ago, even if i got enough sleep (yet aggravated by nights i didn't), really had a negative effect on my face. this was especially noticeable in the undereye area.
it seems when i go to bed earlier i just look better. i think the effects may not have been noticeable had i not done it so many nights during a time of heavy stress. |

I believe it all depends on your "biological time", for example, if you are a night owl (like myself) there is no way you can go to bed at 11 p.m., even though you didn't sleep for two days, you will go to sleep at your usual timing (2-3 a.m.). Trust me, I tried it. I haven't slept for one or two days and I wanted to sleep during a day, but as soon as evening came I was not sleepy anymore and very awake, I did go to bed around 3 a.m., as usual.
Same thing for early birds (like my mother), it doesn't matter if they go to bed late, they will be up at 5-6 a.m., even if they sleep only for a few hours.
You just have to figure out what is works for you and definitely get enough sleep, no matter when your go to bed, late at night, or early. In my case it is very difficult, because I go to bed very late and unfortunately have to get up early (I should change my schedule at work).
I hate when people say:"You should break your habit and go to bed early." I tried it many times, and it didn't work. You can't break your nature. My mother told me that I was night owl when I was born, I stayed up all night and fall asleep after 3 a.m. |

if i stay up too late, i can see my pores magnified and my skin looking all even, splotchy. really unattractive. i think sleeping early and getting enough sleep does do good for the skin. i think it's probably the number 1 beauty secret. |

I would have thought that the most restful, regenerating beauty sleep would come when sleeping when it's dark out (so about 11pm-4am in the summer, as some of you mentioned) and earlier in the winter.
I've read that sleeping when it's light out doesn't allow the body to fully rest (simply because of the light).
But that being said, I wonder how people's skin is in areas where there is 24-hr light/darkness! |

well... 24 light = hide under blankets or something....or build a cacoon! :P 24 darkness= i guess your kinda screwed, because im out of creativity for now :P
Oh and what time would you recommend for winter?
summer= 11pm -> 4am (minimum )
winter= ???? -> ???? |

I'm no expert but I think getting enough sleep would be the most important.
I couldn't make myself go to sleep before 11-12 even if I tried |

I think sleeping early is more to help improve your health, then your skin, because our body needs to rest and do something during deep sleeping at certain hours, which are from 11pm to 4am, so it's better if you can fall asleep during that period.
But for me, more sleeping, more beautiful skin. |

Well, I'm a natural night owl as well. And, I was told years ago by a shiatsu practitioner that I need to get to bed earlier because I was not sleeping during liver meridian peak time - 1-3am (when it's working hardest) - and it was affecting my health. I believe it.
You can probably find a Meridian Wheel Flow Chart online (ah, I found one at http://www.tuberose.com/meridians.html)and if you know anything about the meridians of Chinese medicine you can see what meridian is at it's peak and which is at its lowest energetic point on the wheel. You can learn more about working about this energetic flow in Donna Eden's workwww.innersource.net and Touch for Healthwww.tfhka.orgw andwww.touch4health.com.
I have a Adobe PDF file of the Meridian Flow Wheel that incorporates a quick diagram of the meridian alongside it's peak time. If you would like me to send it to you, pm me asking for it along with your email address. It's a great thing to have. |

Oh, that's so interesting.
I don't personally know about the times of best sleep, but i know for sure that sleep is super important. I went through 2 weeks with very little, and off hours of sleep during exams one year. By the end of this stressful period, i got cystic acne in 3 spots on my cheeks(and I don't get acne) and i looked a tinge of green and all sallow.
The cystic acne never went away after months!! I ended up going to the dermatologist who injected them with cortisone or something, and poof, they dried up and went away (amazing actually).
Anyways, moral of the story. SLEEP IS SUPER IMPORTANT FOR THE SKIN FOR SURE!! |

That is really interesting. My parents always tell me to sleep at an earlier time, something about the "fire" raising in the body thus getting pimples. I do believe it, but when i go to bed early, i just toss and turn til its my "bedtime"!
Thanks for the info and everyones recs! |

i'm just remembering something a friend told me a while back...the higher the levels of light pollution (ie. night lights, street lights through the window), the less likely we are to get a really good deep sleep because the light interferes. don't know how true this is.
don't think it has anything to do with the time you go to sleep & skin, unless the deepness of your sleep could have an effect on your skin...but thought i'd mention it as something vaugly interesting. |

Heh, my gran and mum always said that every hour you sleep before midnight counts double those you sleep after midnight. Fuzzy math, if you ask me, but I get where they're coming from. However, I've recently learned to adjust my schedule so I'm less of an early bird, and I find it refreshing to be able to stay up late to enjoy a good movie or concert without totally dozing off, and also to be able to sleep in despite the sun and city waking up. And I don't feel less well-rested than before when I went to bed early and got up early. |
