Using Obagi exfoderm was my first exfoliant product. I actually do not think it is strong at all. There's an exfoderm forte that I haven't tried, I think that's stronger.

I'm not sure the aha % of JMs bioglycolic, but I did try Alpha Hydrox last night & it didn't sting as much as JMs. But I don't know if that may be a result of JMs other ingredients - salycilic & azelaic.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I though glycolic was considered an AHA??

I paste from JM between aha and Glycolic Acid

Quote:
Glycolic acid is what is known as an "alpha hydroxy acid," or "AHA." Alpha hydroxy acids are a family of acids that occur naturally in various fruits and foods, and are often collectively referred to as fruit acids. Glycolic acid found in sugar cane has received the most attention medically because it has the smallest molecule of all the AHAs. This small molecular weight enables glycolic acid to penetrate more effectively and to ultimately bring about the most dramatic and beneficial changes of all the AHAs.

Among other things, glycolic acid loosens the "glue-like" attachments or cellular cement that is characteristic of many skin conditions such as acne, photodamage (environmental aging), and hyperpigmentation. This non-invasive lifting of the cells in the stratum corneum enables glycolic acid to act as a phenomenal resurfacing agent that can immensely improve the appearance of the skin and has even proven to be a valuable tool in reducing the depth of acne scarring.

As physicians and researchers gain a greater interest in glycolic acid, medical studies have revealed that glycolic acid may stimulate collagen, increase epidermal volume, and even act as a powerful antioxidant and free radical inhibitor. Tests also illustrate how glycolic acid acts as a delivery agent when combined with other beneficial ingredients or medications, thus potentiating the desired results.

sometimes it is not about the % concentration of the AHA, but the pH of the product, which varies. sometimes you can have a high concentration AHA, with a higher pH and the product won't be as potent and something with a lower concentration.

I have very resistant skin and only products that are very potent have any effect on me. the product that i'm currently in love with is MaMa Lotion, which is an AHA but is made up of Mandelic and Malic Acids in concentrations of 10% each for a total of 20% acid. the acids themselves are considered to be more "gentle" than glycolic acid but, it also has a very low pH making the product very acidic and thus very potent. I personally push MaMa Lotion, lol, but if you are looking for a strong acid, i suggest not just looking at the % but also at the pH if u can find out what it is. HTH!

You can get any percentage of glycolic acid, etc. from DIY providers and / or on Ebay. You just have to know what's gonna work on your skin. Do you have experience with AHAs, BHAs, etc. to know what strength would work best with your skin? Stronger is not always better.

Thanks ben_253, just the info I was looking for. So it has the same % as alpha hydrox souffle. I think the bioclear works best on my acneic/hyperpigmented skin b/c along w/the aha, it also has the bha for the acne & azelaic for the hyperpigmentation. But, the alpha hydrox is a fraction of the cost of JM. I think that as soon as get my acne completely under control & the hyperpigmentation issues eradicated I will maintain the results w/the alpha hydrox. I have incorporated Obagi's clear into my regime & am hoping this will expedite the clearing of my hyperpigmentation issues.

lunarmm: I know, you're so right that stronger isn't always better. My skin seems to tolerate the 10-12% aha well. I don't have excessive peeling, but there is definite turnover/sloughing of the skin.

No worries leidon. Smile

You can get the JM through eBay cheaper than here and other online retailers. The AlphaHydrox souffle is a cream whereas the JM lotion is more like a serum which is absorbed immediately (it has no hydration effect on the skin). I've also tried the JM Bioclear cream and it has also been quite successful, it's much more hydrating than the lotion.

Good luck! Smile
