Hi
My son has lovely skin but is starting to get spots around nose and on chin.
I have been getting him to exfoliate with a very gentle product and have bought him Dr H cleanser - the milky one.
This has helped but not sure about what toner to use plus has anyone any suggestions?
It has been hard to get him into a routine but he is pretty good now and want to help him as much as possible.
Thanks |

His skin is bound to be up and down as he aproaches his teens.
Keep his routine simple, Cleanser you have already started him with.
A good toner is just plain old witch hazel, treat any acne or spots with Tea Tree Essential Oil and a basic oil free moisturiser, I think Nivea do a good one.
Twice a week exfoliate.
Diet, plenty of water are the main things to concentrate on, encourage him to eat lots of protien rich, zinc rinc foods (a high zinc diet is especially good for teenage boys and is excellent for acne skin).
Oh and try not to get hime hooked on EDS too early |

Wow, this thread brings me back to my junior high school days when all we knew about skincare was Stridex, Oxy10...
I agree that it's best to keep it simple. You don't want him to think that you have to buy lots of expensive products to achieve good skin. You might even consider taking him shopping to a drugstore or health foods store and see what he would pick out for himself.
One line that I really liked when I was younger was Neutrogena. I still use some of their body products.
You're such a great mom. I remember when I started developed blackheads, my mom would always point them out and say that I had to use a scrub. But I was probably around your son's age, with no idea what a scrub was, or how to get one. |

Agree with rosebud re plenty of water and a look at his diet. Although i think at this age you can expect it due to hormones |

Does he use sunscreen. Boys at his age could be playing under the sun a lot and excess unprotected sun exposure could only worsen the acne condition. |

That's so important and it'll also get him used to the idea that applying sunscreen is a necessary everyday thing. My husband refuses to wear sunscreen unless we're going to an all day outdoor activity. He still thinks of it as something special, not something that's needed daily. |

I really don't like or promote proactive (esp. the cream) but that being said, I have my daughter use the toner only from it and when she uses it,her skin is clear and when she forgets for a few days, it gets worse. I know her skin will get worse later but this has been really helpful. It contains no alcohol, it's witchhazel with salyilic (sp?) acid in it. When she used other toners they were too strong plus this is more effective. Don't use their lotion!!! |

I was trying natural and/or drugstore stuff with 13 y-o DS. It wasn't working and I didn't want things to get worse. Took him to our pediatrician. Prescribed Benzaclin and OTC benzoyl peroxide pads. Also, I take him for teen facials to get extractions done. His skin is in excellent condition now. I wish we could have treated DS's mild acne without a bunch of chemicals, but the acne was starting to hit his self-esteem and he was frustrated. Within 6 weeks on Benzaclin/BP combo we saw huge improvement. By taking him for extractions when needed, he isn't jacking with his skin himself so no scarring. |

I didn't even know there was such a thing as teen facials. That's excellent that he's going for professional extractions. I have a small keloid on my chest as a result of my teenage mistakes. I hate it A LOT, but whenever I want to really fuss with my skin, it helps me reconsider my actions. |

Truly, it's one of the best decisions he's made this year, agreeing to listen to me on this! From what I've seen, they cost $30-40 (depending on esthetician/salon you go to) and last about 30 minutes -- they tend to be called teen facials or "mini-facials". |

Milky cleansers aren't the best for combatting acne. As he enters puberty, his oil production will increase, and using a milky cleanser may only acerbate the mild acne he's experiencing.
I advise using a gentle gel-based cleanser. Some to consider:
Anthony Logistics Acne Cleanser
B Kamins Hydrating Acne Wash
PSF Papaya Cleansing Gel
Decleor Clean Up Daily Purifying Face Gel
Dermalogica Anti-Bac Skin Wash
Also handy: Dermalogica Skin Purifying Wipes (for his gm/sports bag) |
