I know nothing about tea (sweet tea is as technical as I get lol) but have a friend that drinks it quite regularly so I was thinking about buying some "luxury" tea as a birthday gift. Is there such things as fancy tea brands and where can you buy them? Also, can you tell the difference between fine tea and good old Celestial Seasonings? |

I love tea! Not to be snooty, but the difference between quality tea and Celestial Seasonings is like the difference between PSF's Papaya Cleansing Gel and dial soap.
A unique, exotic, luxury tea gift would be a flowering tea. You can read about it at Mountain Rose Herb's website:
http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/tea_bev/tea_flower.html
To appreciate seeing the beautiful flower effect, she will also need a glass teapot or pitcher (Mountain Rose also sells these). Be sure to give the instructions with the gift. It's an incredible experience, especially for a tea lover.

I agree with the flowering tea--- it is seriously nice stuff and is sure to be well-received. Actually, a guy gave me some once back in college, and I was tickled pink! |

A single step up from CS is Twinings, Bigelow, or Pompadour. Stash is about like CS.
Something authentic like from a Chinatown shop -- Oolong, gunpowder. A TenRen package might be nice. The most perfumy teas are Earl Grey and Jasmine.
I have gotten green teas from a mail order in Japan. Gyokuro is grown in the shade!!! |

I'm pretty sure this is the one.
Read up on the different teas. Gyokuro can be funky and/or grassy! Some of these are pricy compared to regular teas.
If you are really a fan, I recommend the Ito En bottled tuff. I can get it in stores around me, you might start in your local health food store. They have a number of varieties, and even oolong, which is not green, but delicious to me. |

What kind of tea does she like, black, green, floral, white tea? If you don't know, find out as there's so many and she might not like the one you get. |

Where are you and (your friend) located?
For bagged teas, I like:
Numi www.numitea.com (they carry flowering teas as well)
Republic of Tea www.republicoftea.com (they carry flowering teas as well)
Zhena Gypsy Tea www.gypsytea.com
There is a local place to me that also does mail order/online. They do gift packages as well: www.wayneteasalon.com
They just moved closer to me and I'm gotten some lovely rooibos (red tea) from them -- rooibos is becoming my favorite! |

Teavana is also a nice place to pick up nice tea and tea accessories. Try teavana dot com (They have a nice peppermint, but I highly recommend one of the oolongs, I'm slurping down the monkey picked one as we speak, and hoping no monkeys were actually involved with it ) |

I love green tea and flower tea. I love putting a couple rose buds in with green tea leaves. it's not a usual mix but I love it. it looks great in my tea cup, and tastes wonderful. |

What does everyone think of the "Republic of Tea" brand. I tasted some of the varieties at a friends house and liked them. he normal teas were very nice but also the flavored ones that I usually do not like much (Blackberry Sage was really good) |

I like the Republic of Tea. I love the Ginger Peach and Blackberry Sage. They also offer quite a few blends with rooibos (red tea) - my current favorite. I emailed them and requested a catalog and they sent me a sample of the white tea with orange blossoms (which I haven't tried yet). |

That's who I ended up ordering my tea from! Shipping was reasonable and very fast. Oh and the tea smells devine! Too bad I went to Whole Foods yesterday and learned that I could have ran down the street to pick some up . I really want to try their 'Get Clean' tea for skin; anyone tried that one? |

I love mountainroseherbs and I am definitely going to try their tea the next time I order. This flowering tea particularly sounds great. And what nice gift it would make!
lunarmm- please update on us how you like the white tea with orange blossoms. It sounds delish! |

I will give an update on the White Tea with Orange Blossoms but do realize I only have one tea bag as a sample.
Happy day -- I just bought some new teas yesterday
Republic of Tea Safari Sunset Red Tea
http://www.republicoftea.com/templates/directory.asp?navID=16
(I already have their Capetown Harvest; I wanted to get their Good Hope Vanilla to replace the Celestial Seasonings Madagascar Vanilla I ran out of -- but the store was out of it ).
Numi Organic Iced Tea Raspberry Red
http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/CategoryDisplay?cgmenbr=175633&cgrfnbr=556915
Celestial Seasonings Organic Tea Sweet Clementine Chamomile
http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/organic-teas/
As you may notice, rooibos/red tea is a favorite of mine.
It's quite a bonus that it's good for me too (no caffeine, and high in antioxidants, considered an adaptogen [energizing when needed; relaxing when needed]).
I already made a batch of iced Clementine Chamomile and really am enjoying it. |

I have never been much of a tea drinker. Loose tea has been a totally new experience for me. Recently I made a Eminence Organic purchase from EDS. Free with purchase was loose tea. I chose Eminence Chocolate and Cherries Jubilee Tea. OMG this tea is fantastic. It boasts being wonderful for the skin. I have found a new love...loose tea. If any of you purchase Eminence Organics I highly recommend this tea free offer. They also have it in a pear blend.
Any other loose tea raves are welcome. |

Thanks for reviving this thread, Winnie!^-^
Anyways, I did in fact finally try Republic of Tea's Get Clean and I absolutely LOVE it! The semi-spicy vanilla almond flavor is lovely. My favorite way is to drink it over ice. |

If you're just starting out as a tea drinker, I would recommend Tetley's line of green teas. They come in so many flavours! I have Mango Passionfruit, Mint, Honey Lemon Ginseng, and Blueberry! Their white tea is also very nice. |

Liz, I noticed Get Clean comes in bags. Do the bags contain leaf tea? I did not want the fine grind we get in supermarkets. Get Clean doesn't come in loose. |

Mmm...I am in love with tea. I love venturing out to tea houses although they are somewhat difficult to find in my area. I really want to try to Eminence tea discussed above. My favorite, although it is a bagged tea, is London Fruit & Herb teas. They have become very difficult to find in Canada now, but they are amazing. Has anyone else tried them? |

Been a tea drinker for a while now. I like going to Oriental food stores to look for jasmine, oolong, green... you name it. Oddly enough, Costco sells green tea (Kirkland brand) that is pretty good. If you like green tea and drink it frequently (which I do), Costco is a good deal.
What I like best is brown rice tea. I would "toast" brown rice in a frying pan until they get a bit puffy (but not burnt). Steep them in water for a bit. Inhale the scent and drink that hearty tea. Relaxing! |
