hi I am 15 and I went the beach for the first time in years.. and used a tan lotion. I've never tanned before. The tan lotion I used didn't have sunscreen in it, it had mineral oil and some other kind of oil.. I was unaware of this because my friend applied it to me.
That was 3 days ago.. the tan is so bad it hurts to take off my shirt. I have some blisters and sleeping is very uncomfortable. I managed to pickup some virgin coconut oil at the store and aloe gel and have been applying that twice a day to keep it hydrated.
Is there anything I should be doing? I'm also taking 4 caps of Salmon oil x 3 a day, 2 asprin x 2 a day and drinking an antioxident drink with vitamin C and beta carotene. I've totally learned my lesson from this! I will NEVER EVER tan again!!!!!!!!!! .. when my tan heals can I use retin A for the damage?
thanks |

If the sunburn is still painful, you can use a lotion or spray with an anesthetic ingredient to cool the burning--look for ingredients that end in "-caine."
After a few days, the damaged skin will peel. Don't try to hasten it or do anything about it to stop the peeling. It's part of the healing process. Keeping it hydrated will help stop itchiness during the peeling phase.
I wouldn't use anything as harsh as Retin A on your skin. In fact, be as kind and gentle to it as possible for the next few weeks while it recovers from the burn.
Sounds like you had a painful lesson in the importance of sunscreens; hope you feel beter soon. |

There are some good suggestions here using things you probably have a home such as honey, apple cider vinegar, yogurt, aloe, baking soda, etc.

If you have severe blisters, though, the herbalist who wrote the article suggests a trip to the doctor.
I hope you will be feeling better soon! |

I have blisters but I don't think they are severe. It just seems to hurt alot! and I'm pretty tolerant to pain. I'm on vacation right now in Mexico so getting those types of things are hard.. I was very lucky to beable to get aloe and coconut oil. I'm using lily of the valley aloe and it lists vitamin A, E and C as the third ingredient. Should this worry me? I'm applying a mixture of coconut oil & aloe 2/3 times a day. I'm thinking I'll keep doing this till it heals completely then get a low strength retin A and add it to my mixture (but not for a few weeks). |

I would also go for a Vitamin C body lotion and apply that to the burned areas. Vitamin C is rumoured to be able to prevent sun damage worsening if applied immediately after exposure.
Remember to also keep yourself fully hydrated while taking Vit C. Its water soluble so doesn't remain in the body - so if you wanted to you could take it throughout the day.
Just don't try taking it before you go to sleep as it can prevent you from being able to fall asleep. |
