I've always read that the best tools are your own fingers for applying liquid/creamy foundation. Lately I've come across "experts" that advise to use a foundation brush. What are your opinions? |

Hi Cindy67,
Like you I always used my fingers. Since finding EDS I purchased a foundation brush (MAC) and find I use less liquid foundation. Best of all it looks even and very natural. |

I use cosmetic sponges to apply liquid foundation and to smooth over mmu. Fingers are just to messy. |

I use my fingers. But I find a good makeup base is essential for smoothness and ease for applying. I'm currently using Botanics Smoothing Facial Serum. |

I used my fingers for years, and then
purchased a brush and also a flocked sponge.
I like applying foundation with a brush the
best. I think I use less foundation and get a better finish. |

So what kind of foundation brush do u ladies use? Synthetic or natural? I heard that using synthetic brush is good for applying liquid foundation or concealer. Is that true? Also, what brands do u recommend? I feel that it used up a lot of foundation when using a sponge or wedge. |

I bought my first foundation brush this spring (Illuminare which is synthetic) and found it amazing. When I used my fingers, I could never get the great finish I get with the brush |

I've tried sponge and brush, but always go back to fingers. i find the product goes on better when warmed a bit first on my fingers and pressed into the skin.
I think it also depends on what kind of foundation you use, 'cause I'll still use a sponge when applying heavier stick foundation. I would think the really thin formulas would work best with a good synthetic brush.
And then maybe it's because I liked to finger paint as a kid! |

That's a very good point. The ticker foundations are probably better when applied with fingers. But for the thin ones the brush is excellent. So maybe it's not so much about which tool, but more about finding the right one for ones favorite foundation(s) |

I use a brush. I put the foundation on the back of my hand first, this warms the foundation up so it goes on better. I use a synthetic brush as the brand of make up brushes I use (Trish McEvoy) makes the foundation brush in a synthetic (though the rest are sable).
Sometimes, I use my fingers but it does get a bit messy and you use up a lot more. And I think the finish is better with a brush. |

I tried to use brush, sponge and fingers. I think it wasted the foundation when using brush and sponge. Also, you need to wash them frequently. So, I like using fingers. |

I use sponges or a foundation brush depending on how much time I have in the morning. I prefer a foundation brush because it looks so natural and you do use less foundation. |

I assume it will take soem time to get used to brushes. I got a holiday set from MAC, LOVE their brushes. But tried the foundation brush with no success. It takes longer time than I used to(hee maybe I wasn't skilled enough).
With fingers I don't find I use that much foundation. Btw, I am using Armani and Prescriptive's foundation. And they are so smooth to apply |

I used to use cosmetic sponges and then I tried a foundation brush and I will never go back! I use ALOT less makeup now and it goes on so much more smoothly! |

I don't wear foundation much because I've yet to find one I really love. I've always used my fingers to apply liquids and once I heard about the great finish that brushes give I thought maybe that would help me have more success with foundation. I bought one but just can't really figure out how to use it. Do just "paint" the foundation on your skin or are you supposed to be buffing it in? I was hoping once I figured out how to use the brush I might like wearing foundation more but no luck so far. |

I've just recently switched to brushes and I LOVE it! It does take quite a bit longer, but the coverage is so much better/even it is worth it! I blend with my fingers. |

I used to use my fingers but found it way too messy. Then i've used a make-up sponge for years and it worked great. Right now I'm using a foundation brush by Estee Lauder which feels really nice on the skin but I still like how easy the sponge works and the application of foundation with the sponge. The only problem with using a sponge is that it absorbs alot of foundation. A good foundation brush costs about $40 CAN whereas you can go to any store and by a bag of make-up sponges for $5 BUT in the long run, a sponge wastes more foundation than a brush |

Hey Mamawalnut,
Yes you kind of 'paint' it on with light, soft strokes starting from the centre of your face working outwards.... probably not like a buffing motion as you do with the buffing brushes for mineral foundation.
I love my foundation brush, it's a MAC also and have had it for many years. I'm also eyeing the Prescriptives one. I use it for liquid and stick foundation (pump/scrape it off onto the back of my hand with the end with a brush.)
With a brush you get more of an 'airbrushed' finish and yes you do use a lot less than you would with a sponge (it soaks up too much product.) The thing with brushes though is that sometimes you may get some streaking....where sponges come in very handy. They're like erasers for mistakes.
Like most of you ladies here I used to use my fingers too until I discovered the foundation brush. It's more hygienic, uses less product and the finish is more WW !!
I try to minimise the use of fingers on my face unless it's cream blush or to blend out concealer with my fingers...there's no other thing that works better. |

I used to use fingers for many years until I decided to try the sponges and I love it, never used my fingers again. However, I do agree that sponges take up a lot of foundation so I might get the brush later. |
