I am currently using a 12.5% peel from Platinum skincare to fade areas of pigmentation, with nice results. However, I would like to prevent the pigmentation from returning.

After doing a bit of research, I decided to purchase Loreal Revitalift with Mexoryl, which recieved nice reviews on Makeupalley.com. However, I know from this site that some people opt for a physical sunblock as well as a chemical formula.

I purchased Juice Organics SPF 30 light tint moisturizer, which I have used in the past. It uses a zinc based formuala as the sunscreen.

So my question is this........can you use these products together, or do they cancel each other out? Mountain girl posed this question in a previous post.

I am curious about this as well. I thought mexoryl was supposed to be one of the more stable chemical sunscreens. Could using a product with zinc in it at the same time reduce its effectiveness?

I don't think I can answer this... All I know is that chemical sunscreens together with minerals can cause a conflict, e.i that the minerals cancel out the protection. Physical sunscreens go well togehter with minerals, but they are so and so when it comes to UVA protection. Apparantly? Would this be applied to zink then? I am about to buy some Avene chemical ss, as I've heard they are an exeption to this.

Well, after reading numerous posts, I am still pretty confused.

SO....I went ahead and purchased what seems to be the HG of sunscreens.......La Roche's Athelios 60 with mexoryl XL and SX. This formula is only sold in Canada and Europe. I purchased mine from Canada at feelbest.com. They are running a special....you get three bottles of the Athelios 60 and one free bottle of your choice. My total was about $65.00 U.S. and that included shipping. I just hope that this doesn't break out my acne prone skin. If you read the reviews on makeupalley.com....the product seems to be a bit greasy.

Most of my friends with breakout prone skin use LRP sunscreens without any problems except shine breakthrough during the day. However, the key is to make sure that you clean it ALL off at the end of the day. Euro sunscreens cling to your skin like nothing else does! I find that a normal cleanser (foam, gel, lotion, cream or milk) isn't good enough at removing Euro sunscreens. Cleansing oils (commercial ones or plain carrier oils) or balms do a much better job, so make sure you do have one on hand. Otherwise, you're very likely to end up with blackheads and spots.

Make sure the product doesn't contain Avobenzone (Parsol 1789 or Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, a chemical sunscreen). It is the one whose protection minerals will reduce.

So far I haven't heard that Mexoryl can be degraded by minerals.

So basically only "Avobenzone" will be degraded if applied with MMU?

What about Tinosorb now? Is it a physical or chemical ss?

avobenzone stabilized with tinosorbs should not degrade upon exposure to sunlight... bioderma's latest ss line has minerals (ti20; Zn0) AND avo AND tinosorbs all together, and it seems to do the job just fine (I tested it on the beach). whether or not these chemicals degrade the skin barrier is quite another sotry--it's your call!

by the way, the french equivalent to the fda is MUCH more stringent and careful when it comes to approving formulations, esp sunscreens. this is why all the major pharma-cosmetics companies over there have to reformulate constantly.
make sure you buy the latest formulations of avene, bioderma, etc.
the reason we don't have tinosorbs and other stabilizers over here has to do with our devastatingly flawed lobby system (in america that is). l'oreal U.S. bought the rights to use mexoryl and they have cornered the market on ss.
