ok i have never actually used a peel and i have always wondered what happens i.e. how skin looks after one.

it is something iv always considered dooing for about 3-4 years now but havent actually done it. why? well i guess im scared i might end up damaging the skin or looking like a freak until skin recovers.

but today i while looking in the mirror close up i thought damn my skin looks dull and a very light wrinkle from lip to nose.....my skin looking uneven round the mouth area. also uneven on forehead (the uneven mouth and forehead iv had for 4-5 years now) i have a tiny discoloration lookin patch near side of the eye..how did that patch happen well not from any products but more from lack of product there, confused well once like a year and half ago the therapist decided to put facial bleach over my face.....yes i liked the appearance afterwards and it looked brite....but since then what bothered me was that lil patch near left eye where she dint put the bleach....that remain darker while the rest of my face appeared a shade or so lighter.....and yes iv put lightening creams etc there but that patch of SKIN doesnt get lighter to match my face Shock

ok so bottom line is it got me thinking today a peel might help me out here give me a newer skin while peeling away the dead one from the top i hope my problem areas will be fixed?

my goal....to have even smooth bright facial skin all round. i reckon my face looks the dullest from the rest of me and its like 4 shades or so darker than what actually my neck and body is......i gave up on lightening creams as i thought they do more damage than good..so i stuck to using brightening creams but they dont help at all in fact. i mean even that decleor night whitening cream does NOTHING so i just use that as a moisturizer than counting on that giving me any brightening. ok iv given up on the idea of my face ever matching my body or neck but at least what i would like is to have even glowing facial skin

im hoping after the new skin from the peel, my products will work better than what it is at the moment trying to fix the dull skin, rather it will help me maintain then fix Exclamation

ok so my question is what do you guys recommed? what sort of peel would be best and help me out? what i do know is higher percentage peel is best to be done at a salon or whatever by an expert. but if i have some sort of idea than id know what im looking for and be better informed than having someone talk me into something to get money out of me.

what im thinking for now is using some sort of at home peel? start of with these than going for the drastic higher percentage ones... how effective are those? iv read here a number of times a couple of peels being mentioned now and then for example juice beauty apple green peel, pumpkin peel etc..will these work for me?

these at home peels can you tell me how does the skin look and feel after? .....do these literally peeel of a layer of skin? if so how do you know that it has! Exclamation

and if the skin is peeling over the next couple of days, then dont people ask questions? or is the peeling very very mild hardly noticeable by the next person other than you Shock Confused

is the skin dry and flakey alot?
any recommendations or your feedback will help me out. thanx

by the way im 23 Sad .. and my skin varies from dry to normal with the odd breakout now and then. skin color best i can describe is light golden brown.
i can cut out a part and insert an image to give better idea but i dunno how to put up images here.

I am sure you will receive lots of suggestions but the most effective and safe peel I have used is Osmosis Polish. It is applied in a thin film after cleansing, left on for between 5 to 15 minutes and then rinsed off. You may have some very slight flaking which is easy to remove with a damp facecloth and should not reappear. Your skin will feel extremely soft and smooth. It would probably be best if used with the Osmosis Cleanser or another gentle cleanser.

I like the Philosphy Micro-delivery peel but recently I discovered Kate Somerville's Kate in a Jar - that is so much more convenient to use. You apply a thin leayer over a cleansed skin, leave it for only 30 secs (your skin will tingle) - wash it off and your face feels and looks really smooth! I do this twice a week. The Philosphy peel also makes your skin feel and look great but takes a little bit longer - it is a two step process. Both products smell fabulous as well.

You could check out makeup artists choice website. They have lactic acid peels, glycolic peels, etc, and very useful information on the site. I am not sure you are wanting that type of peel or not, but you may get some information at least!

simran, no, I don't think they are as harsh as that, but when I have a blemish that I have picked and there is a layer of skin left on it, and then I use the peels - I notice that it comes off quite readilly as I flannel off the peel. So if it does "peel", it is very microscopic. Sometimes your skin can be left with abit of residual redness for about 10 to 20mins. But by golly it feels great and you wake up with a glow. You can always ask EDS or Kate Somerville for a sample of the Kate in a Jar (I think it has recently been renamed exfolikate) and philosophy may let yoou sample the microdelivery peel system (or mecca shops will). Good luck.

Out of all the peels I have used (PSF, Juice Beauty, Kate Somervile, Elemis), I like NCN's pumpkin peel the best Very Happy
It is a 30% glycolic, lactic, salicylic, fruit acids pumpkin peel, so it is very strong.
I can see a dramatic difference to my skin when I have used this peel, as my face is more smoother and brighter. I have only used it maybe 5-6 times, but my acne marks are slowly fading. However, I cant say that its purely because of the peel, but it certainly helps!
Seeing as you're new to peels, maybe you can start off with PSF's pumpkin peel (its not as strong as NCN), which I have used before and liked. But after so many recs and reviews on NCN, I decided to try it out after using up my PSF and I dont regret it! Its slighly pricier than PSF but it does a better job, IMO. There are many members here who love this peel too.

My favourite is Phytomer's Peeling Vegetal, gentle yet effective. You'll notice clearer, brighter and softer skin after you rinse off the product.

Another product to look out for is Decleor's Face Peel Cream. But personally, I find this a bit difficult to use as compare to the Phytomer one.

I have read several articles that suggest over exfoliation/peeling can actually damage the skin and accelerate aging. Some also suggested that it can cause the skin to become very sensitive and can actually stop the skin absorbing products. I also read that excessive use of glycolic and aha peels will exacerbate scarring by stopping the healing process.
I didn't keep any references to these articles but if I come across them again, I will post links. It is the reason that I have remained with products like the Cellcosmet Exfoliant and the Osmosis peel which only uses lactic acid.

bushy.ummmm you said those articles suggest peeling can cause damage to skin........did they mention this excludes Osmosis? If so why cause as you said it is a peel......so m confused why osmosis is excluded from the category? is it cause the article said lactic acid based peels are ok? Confused

Simran, the articles said excessive and over use of exfoliation/peels could damage the skin and/or cause accelerated aging. None of the articles referred to any brands.
From research that I have done, lactic acid is gentler than glycolic or aha. I also think that the term excessive would mean using strong solutions very regularly.

Hi bushy

Did the article mention how much is too much exfoliation? Because some people use AHA and BHA's daily and they claim that their skin has never been better.

If you could pull out that article, that would be greatm as I'm sure we all want to read it.

Thanks!

If you go to the Osmosis website there are little video clips that talk about how you can over peel your skin causing damage. Look for the one called Plateau effect. Hope this helps.

Eeek...AHA and BHA will burn the skin like putting a lit cigeratte onto the skin!? Shock
I dont know whether to believe him, as I do love my NCN pumpkin peel...but then again he does sound convincing Confused

Can someone else shed some light on this issue of AHA and BHA damaging the skin and has ageing effects?

I haven't actually seen the video you are referring to but I will try and find the articles that I read. I really don't know what is excessive as it wasn't explained but I did think at the time that perhaps the effects are cumulative and it takes a while to realise that the skin is gradually being damaged.
I have used Renew, Replenish, Boost, Polish, Shelter, Cleanse and Refresh. The interesting thing with the serums is that if you don't think it has completely absorbed then you can dampen your skin with water and continue to massage the product in. I get the products from Karen Herzog-JMilan but I think Hydraskincare sells them as well and there are probably others.

Dr. Ben Johnson is the guy in the videos. He helped form Cosmedix then broke away and formed Osmosis. This is a professional line and the products are very active. A lot of them contain a form of Retinal called Retinaldehyde. IMO best used under care of a skin specialist. I have most of the products and like them. I can't use the Polish more than once a week. It makes my skin exfoliate off in sheets. Rolling Eyes

i think everyone's skin is different (thickness, temperament, and how quickly it renews itself), so some people have no prob with aha/bha every day but for some people it would be bad for their skin... take both sides (it's fantastic and my skin has never been better! it's not good for you and damaged my skin!) with a grain of salt and work up slowly to find what works for you?
personally i love my psf pumpkin peel but i feel like it's enough for me, i didn't really feel the need to step up to the stronger ncn. im not giving up on my aha/bha cleanser though, it gets rid of the winter flakies. i stopped using my bioclear though, that itchy/tingly feeling just always made me feel like it wasn't doing something good... unlike the pumpkin peel where it tingles but you feel like it's really doing something for your skin.
