I have just started using MSM in powder form. The jar says to use 1 teaspoon and Yesterday, I guess I had more than 1 teaspoon as I am too lazy to measure exactly, I had the worst headache that I have ever had in a very long time! The xmas shopping yesterday didn't help the situation either! :-&

bugaboo - you kill me! It was only yesterday that you posted that you never get headaches from MSM! Laughing BTW, if your MSM powder is anything like my own, 1 teaspoon equals 5000 mgs (which is what I take every morning, but had to work up to from 1 gram a day). Smile

I know but I took a little more than normal, not thinking that it would really make that much difference!

My jar (also in powder form) says to take a 1/4 teaspoon (1,000 mg), and the discrepancy between the two seems pretty big. In any case, other things can factor in like other medications and supps your body has to process, as well as alcohol if you drink. I believe that MSM headaches are caused by an overload of toxins in the system (like what happens with a hangover). So to prevent the headaches, be careful to ensure the body can process toxins as well as it is able (don't drink alcohol or take any medicine when you take the MSM, drink lots of water, slowly work up to the dose you want, starting at 1/4 teaspoon increments).

WATER!

It is well-known and well-documented that anyone who takes MSM must (MUST) increase their water intake at least five-fold.

Headaches mean the toxins are flushing out of your cells quickly and not being excreted via your kidneys. The more of a headache you have, the more water you should be drinking.

Stay away from dehydrating beverages like coffee, anything with caffeine and alcohol while taking MSM.

Google "water MSM" and you'll see that I speak truth.

Please pass this bit of knowledge on to your friends or ANYONE who is taking MSM.

I hear ya, bugaboo!! My guess is it's not the slight increase of MSM that triggered the detox headache and that the real cause might have been lack of water or an increase in coffee (and/or alcohol) the day or night before. Like Jeannine and Bolla have pointed out, you have to be careful about consuming things that dehydrate the body when you're taking MSM. And there is nothing like coffee and/or alcohol to dehydrate your body the most! I drink around 2-3 liters of water every day, but if I have any wine and/or coffee (or both in one day), and I don't drink as much water as I normally do, then I will have a MSM-induced headache the next day. Here is a great tip that I've been experimenting with and that is working really well for me. If I indulge in too much coffee or any type of alcohol at night, then I consume a good liter of water the following morning BEFORE I take my MSM.

So always think about what you do (or were doing) the night before your next MSM dose and if you drank as much water the previous day/night. As Bolla has mentioned, increasing your water intake is very important while you're taking MSM as this helps to flush out toxins safely. If you're 'celebrating' with spirits of any kind during the holidays, then I would replenish with some water before bed and then drink 1 full liter of water the following morning and take your MSM before lunch (instead of around breakfast if that's been your practice). I just experimented with this again today (as I had some coffee and wine last night) and I did not have any sort of MSM-induced detox headache today (not even a slight one which has happened in the past). Smile The key is the extra water in the AM before you take your MSM. HTH's in the future....
