The products in the different lines are always promoted as being designed to "work together" (ie. cleanser, with the mask, with the toner, with the moisturizer, etc.)
How much truth is there to this?
Need to replace the basics and am wondering if I should just try them from one line (am considering Dr. H.) or if I should choose the most highly recommended cleanser, mask, toner, moisturizer??? (I am the drier side of normal, age 37.)
Thoughts? |

Personally I think its unnecessary, use what works best for your skin. I have always mixed lines. |

I agree totally. Mix away!
I have a few "rules" that I adhere to like getting a cleanser with a more neutral toward acidic Ph.
Also waiting between exfoliating and applying C serums in the morning and CP's at night. |

I don't think you need to stick with one product line. Fortunately, I find most of the Janson Beckett's line great for my skin. In saying that, I do use products from other companies. Actually I think it is a good thing to switch things up from time to time. |

I think sticking to one line works best for the bank account of the manufacturers.
Apart from that, I have personally always been a mixer, and I conceive of the "sticking to one line"-idea as marketing BS from desperate companies. |

Good question. I always wondered about that too; although I am mixer. Usually I end up with products from 1 or 2 lines and alternate using each line. Not the most economical way to do it if you have to purchase all at once. I agree with everyone else, it's just a matter of finding what you like. Right now I have eye cream from Dr. H, moisturizer by Caudalie and toner by Decleor. I usually worry more about mixing when it comes to treatment products like serums but haven't had any problems if I mix. |

I have always been a mixer and right now I have like 6 different types of eye creams and three night creams - just for starters. I've never had any problems with mixing. |

Before, when I was completely new to "skincare" I thought that I should stick to just one brand as I was so sucked into the marketing--- "all the products in this line works together to achieve the greatest results. If you use just one, then you will not see the likely results!"
However, a year into experimenting with different skincare lines, I use what works for my skin rather than sticking to a regime entirely of one line. |

I think that the only true answer is through trial and error - i know that its true for some lines but for others you can get even better results if you mix them |

I am defintely a mixer! More a dabbler now I think about it - I can have up to 3 or 4 different brands going at the same time. It is much more fun. So long as there is no massive explosion/break-out, it is really good to mix and try new brands. I guess we all have our favourites that we will buy and buy again, then there are some products that we don't even finish... |

During my recent trip to Sephora an associate talked about the skin care lines as being based in science or based in nature. I wonder if it pays to stick to one or the other - regardless of the brand name of individual products??
Any thoughts? |

IMO only under certain circumstances like, if you are wanting to deal with irritation or rosacea you wouldn't want to use a line that was based on acids or lots of manual exfoliation. Just like if you were dealing with acne you wouldn't want to load up your skin with "cones" or other pore cloggers. I think its OK to use a whole line if you are getting the results you want but its not necessary to use all the products in order to achieve your goal. I use mostly "natural" products but also think that things like retin-a are helpful. Sometimes it good to use natural products to soothe irritation from science based products and on the other hand to use science based products to boost natural products. I hope that makes sense and answers your question! |

I've always mixed different products from different brands. Some things work better from certain brands than others. Can't use products in the winter that I used in the summer. |

Interesting discussion. I've always thought that our skin care needs are so varied that it's actually smarter to pick and choose what right for each of us within all the lines, but who knows? Maybe someday I'll find that HG line of products that are all perfect for me. |
