ok so heres the deal. a while back i went to the dermatologist and got on retin a .025%. it worked WONDERS. then about a few months ago i felt it was time to move up to the next level of Retin A and went back to the dermatologist, and he put me on .1 Retin a MICRO. For like the first week or two, my skin was flawless, then came the itchy, red, dry flaky skin. The flakes and redness and dryness are GONE, but my skin does NOT look good.
Idk if its the retin a micro, or what. but im confused. so what i want to do is go BACK to the dermatologist (again) and go on .1 retin A (NO micro). is there even a difference?
and my next question would be...whats the difference between retin a, tazorac, renova etc?
thanks for any advice i get! |

I've used Tazorac and Retin A... Would definitely say that Tazorac worked better for me. They are all Vitamin A derivatives but just different kinds. |

Hi Natefan87, I read your other posts about your experiences with Retin-a and I wanted to ask you for your opinion/advice if that's okay
I've been using a generic cream based 0.025% retin-a for a just a little over a month and I've been in the flakey, spotty, red face place for 3 weeks and I'm getting worried that it's not going to improve!
I leave at least 30 minutes after washing before applying and I use it 5 nights out of 7.
The flakiness isn't as bad as it was and not that noticeable if you don't look too close . The acne spots are mainly around my hairline and jawline and so can be disguised(-ish) with makeup but the redness, oh the redness! I look like I've been up Everest and have windburn! It makes me look/feel a lot older than I am too which is depressing.
So what I want to know is when did your skin start to improve? Was it very gradual or quite noticeable? Does the redness go completely?!
If any of you have any other advice I'll gladly take it!
What's worse is I need to renew my passport for an upcoming holiday and I have to do it asap. But I could cry at the thought of having my red, spotty face stuck in my passport for the next 10 years!
Thanks a bunch - littlepea |

Unfortunaltely, red, peeling flaky skin is just part of the Retin A renewal process. What's happening is the skin renewal process that usually takes about 30 days is shortened to about a week, so the skin that usually flakes off normally unnoticed is peeling off everywhere. This is "normal" and will get better in time as your skin acclimates itself to the vitamin A. You may in time find yourself needing to move up in strength! However, it it bothers you, the best thing to do is back off in usage. Go to only 2-3 nights a week and when your skin adjusts bump up to every other nite. After years of vitamin A use, I still use only every other nite alternating an AHA in between. If this still doesn't help it could be that your skin is just too sensitve for Tretinoin use, try a retinol instead (I like SkinCeuticals and SkinMedica brands) these give slower results but much less irritation. |

thanks averygsmom, I'll give it another week or so and if there's no improvement I'll drop back to every other night. |

Is Retin-A Micro a gel formulation? I've never used it. I usually use Retin-A 0.1% cream, however, is recently bought a 0.1% gel formulation and find it very drying.
If you don't like the Micro, I would try upping the strength of the cream formulation to 0.5% or 0.1%. |

I couldn't tolerate prolonged use to retin A (I'm using generic tretinoin) as well. I read somewhere here about doing a retin a mask, so I decided to try it. Instead of doing it every other day (or everyday), I would put a mask on Wednesday night and the peeling would begin by Friday until Sunday. There are times when I'd peel in sheets! This didn't irritate my skin as well because during those following four days, I would use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer only. No additional treatments.
I really like the results without the irritation. Right now, I'm doing it every two weeks, but I may bump it up every week when my skin stops responding. |

Do a search on "retin a mask" and you will find the thread that discusses this. I use tretinoin cream UPS .1%. I think that's the generic retin a. |
