When I was about 14 I could get away with washing my hair about once every three or four days. It still looked fresh and wasn't oily at all on the third day. I washed it more often anyway (perhaps this is where the problem started) but the bottom line is that, if I wanted to, I could not wash it for a few days and it looked fine.

When I got to about 20ish I found that I had to start washing my hair evey second day, otherwise on the third day it was looking a tad oily (still not too bad, but bad enough for me).

Now, that I'm slowly heading towards 30 I find that I have to wash my hair EVERY day. Sometimes I go two days, but that's really pushing it recently. This might have been brought on by the fact that I have just bought myself two very nice shower caps (I've never had one before) Laughing It's as if my hair has realised this and has made sure that they never get used!

Seriously though, did you find as you got older that you had to start washing your hair more often? Is there anything I can do to revert my hair to its original "behavior"? Did this happen because I washed my hair too often and my scalp has decided to increase oil production to counteract that? That's the only thing I can think of. That and hormones I guess... Neutral

TIA

Greasy hair....I've suffered with this all my life...I have always had to wash my hair every day.

I've had people say you should'nt wash it everyday as you are taking out all the natural oils. When I said ok, but would you go out with hair like this?...and they look and say "eerrmmmm well not really"...ok I say I rest my case.

Sometimes by lunchtime my fringe is greasy. I get up in the morning and my hair is greasy lank and limp...its just horrible...

If I curl it I can maybe sometimes get away with it for a second day, but thats only if I was my fringe.! Sad

I know what you mean, Mabsy.

I always thought that my hair got really oily after only one day, so I would wash it every day. Part of that was because I was on a dance team and working out for an hour to two hours everyday. I was told washing every day is bad for your hair so I stopped, and have been only washing it every other day (I'm no longer dancing so no insane workouts Laughing ). But now, it seems to get oily before the end of the day. Should I go back to washing every day?

At first I thought it was because of the products I used (John Frieda Brilliant Brunette...ugh left TONS of residue), so I switched (to Dove) and the problem seems to be the same.

Hi, I hate to be the oddball here but my situation is the reverse. For years I washed my hair everyday and recently am only washing it on the third day and it still has loads of body in between.

Hi, Mabsy.

We all know that when you wash your face too often, you can increase the oil production. So maybe that also applies to the scalp?

Another thought: if you take long hot showers, you're creating heat and humidity inside those new shower caps. That might cause adverse effects too.

FWIW

I only wash mine every couple of days. Right now, it is needing a trim, as I haven't touched it since June 20th. Haven't had highlights since the middle of April. Hey, I'm blonde anyhow, and my hair lightens-up on it's own in the summertime. Will be getting some low-lights added sometime in September (for contrast). I am SO lazy that I usually have my hair back in a ponytail or twist anyhow. Rolling Eyes

Wow, thank you for all the replies.

Gucci - I tried forcing myself not to wash my hair to help it realise that it has PLENTY of oil and that producing more is really not necessary. But, I have the same problem, I'm just not going out looking like that!!! The photo in the shower cap would be rather embarassing lol I tried to find the pic I found online (the one that made me want to go out and buy the shower cap) but I can't find it Sad It's a ltd ed Bloom one. When I get my camera out one day I'll take a pic Smile

Alohagirl - I must admit I am guilty of taking long showers. But, seeing as my hair gets oily so quickly, I have no problems with humidity build up inside the shower cap - I never get to use it! Sad

Hi Mabsy,

One of my many careers in life was Hairdressing.

I think you hit it right on the head!!! Years ago (I for one) did not wash our hair as often. I am a lot older then you but I used to brush my hair every night. I did not put a lot of product in my hair. Therefore I did not need to wash daily. Always used to think my hair had more body after a day or two.

Now, people usually wash there hair everyday. Yes, this can produce more oil in a lot of people.

I don't know what to tell you to do. My hair is very short now so I wake up with flat head. I automatically wash it in the shower.

I have found one product that has helped my hair shine, nails stronger(and very good for skin). I drink a soy shake every morning. I get it from Rivial Soy. I first starting using it for hot flashes. Within one week hot flashes gone. This particular shake has isoflavone consumption equates to eating 3 to 6 daily servings of traditional soy protein foods like soy milk or tofu.

Apparently there is a big difference in eating pure soy then taking it in pill form.

Anyway, to get back to hair. I still wash my hair everyday but I think the soy has made my hair stronger and very shiny.

Mabsy,
I have always heard it is not good to wash your hair everyday. I haven't done this in years, but it was said that putting a little powder with cornstarch in your hair in the morning will help absorb the grease if you don't want to have to wash your hair. My hair is almost black so this got to be tricky, but i read somewhere that they have even come out with a colored black powder for this problem. I can't say that I was fond of the powder treatment but it's a good fix.

Fairlyfair - I have heard about the powders before. Like you though, my hair is quite dark. I have never been able to find the colored powders in the shops. I do have a "dry shampoo" by a company called Klorane but it's a bit dodgy. It doesn't work really well.

I did go and have a chat to a hairdresser the other day and I was told that, unless it's hormonal (which it apparently can be), it's most probably because I have overwashed my hair and it's now producing more oil. She told me to do the following:

Day 1: Wash hair with shampoo and condition ONLY the VERY ends of it.

Day 2: Wash hair with just warm water and then condition the ends.

Day 3: repeat the cycle. Extend it over to three days after a while.

I'll give it a go. I'm not sure what my hair will look like after the washing with water only on day 2 but I'll see. Only problem is that I am now using Nioxin conditioner which is actually supposed to be massaged INTO the scalp. Talk about contradictions! Laughing

Hello all! In another thread I started to discuss about "gray hair" and while browsing I came up to this one.

I myself, shower/wash my hair - twice even! - In the morning when I get for work - the works - shampoo and conditioner... then at night just before going to bed...

I have read and been told that I shouldn't wash my hair twice because it ruins your hair ie: dry hair and/or eventually I will lost the shineness - which I think I'm experiencing it now. Then of course my hair color fades as fast.
Anyhow, this week I colored my hair, even bought (big bottle) Pureology shampoo/conditioner (Hydrating) - man! spend a lot of dough on that one! and guess what I have only shampooed my hair at night and I also sort of stumble a nice small bottle from Neutrogena Triple Moisture Healing Shine Serum. Which I been using it after shampoo.

Guess what! My hair is now shiny! and I feel that the softness is coming back!

Here's what it says: <Quote>

Neutrogena Triple Moisture™ Healing Shine Serum remedies dryness and damage all the way down to the tips.

Go beyond surface shine with this extraordinary daily leave-in treatment that actually helps repair damage. Treat frazzled and split ends, restoring strength and moisture to weak, dehydrated hair with three naturally derived extracts. Olive penetrates to the center of the hair strand, Meadowfoam Seed helps moisturize the middle and Sweet Almond wraps the surface. A single use will leave your hair brilliantly shiny and healthy looking from root to tip.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture™ provides specialized care for extra dry hair.

A lot of people are saying it's the cleansing agents in shampoos that provokes this kind of downward spiral and are going 'poo (shampoo) free. Someone else posted this site a few weeks ago it makes for interesting reading www.naturallycurly.com

I don't see why the principles wouldn't be applicable to 'straighties' too.

I've been trying to follow some of their advice, unfortunately I can't get hold of any 'cone' free conditioners out here. I think cones are good for straighties, but I've always noticed they do nothing but damage my hair.

I've been trying out ideas for natural shampoos /conditioners which I can make straight from foodstuffs, but so far I've not come up with anything decent.

If anyone has any ideas for that it'd be great.

I'm not oily BTW I'm dry (only hair not scalp which is healthy) so it's a different kind of problem.

Hi molly, yup same here, when I first tried Nature's Gate line, my hair felt better, lighter Smile I have thick straight hair that can go wild sometimes Sad I also do not like cones.

Really? You can't find a cone free yet? Here's a long list maybe one sits in your healthfood store. I live in Manila, Philippines, and they import stuff here to healthfood stores. Smile But I only have little brands to choose from. I usually buy when I go out of the country Smile

Hi joziegrozy

Honestly, can't find cone free stuff. I'm living in Guangzhou, China. I think part of the problem is these 'cone' shampoos are ideal for straight thick Chinese hair. There are no health-food stores that I've found to-date, just a couple of beauty stores which import a few brands. I've spent some time in them and they all contain SLS or similar which also mutilates my hair. We have some of the brands from your list in most shops but they are never exactly the same name and the ingredients are usually in Chinese and that's a bit beyond my vocab. Every one I've bought makes my hair steadily worse so I've given up with them. Thanks for the recipe list. I've tried rather a lot of these ideas in one way or another, but there might be something worth a shot.

I'm reading Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey b/c my 4 yo has curly hair (and I have straight). One of the things she talks about is that hair health and scalp health are two different things. It is really interesting, and I do think that some of the principles apply to straight hair as well. She does talk about harsh cleaning agents and about washing your scalp using water and massage, and then either using a low suds shampoo or simply conditioner to keep hair clean and healthy. I started using devacurl on my dd about two months ago and her curls have never looked better!

When I was younger I only ever washed my hair about once a week and never had a problem with it being oily or greasy. Gradually as I have got older, I have increased the washing to twice a week because of a continual itchy scalp. Finally found it was caused by the shampoos and even though I have always used what I thought were high end shampoos and conditioners, my scalp just got worse. I also tried non SLS shampoos but a few of those had no effect on the itchy scalp (perhaps the ingredient list on the container did not list everything!). I now use Kosmea shampoo and conditioner and am itch free. I also believe SLS in my face cleanser was a contributing factor because the worst itchiness was on the forehead hairline and that copped a lot of the face cleanser.
I tend to believe that when we are younger we can tolerate the chemicals but as we get older, either we have a buildup of chemicals in our systems or our immune system is weakening, either way, intolerance of a lot of products is more common as you get older IMO.

I've had to shampoo my hair everyday since the age of 11 (puberty). Mad I've tried every shampoo, dry shampoo (had to re-shampoo), talc on the roots (had to re-shampoo), using conditioner only (had to re-shampoo). On my days off, if I'm staying in the house, I'll go without shampooing. This dose not help my hair is only greasier and smelly.

This has been going on for well over 40 years and I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. Mad

Molly, I was in Guangzhou last November, and I remember a GNC store near the Garden hotel where I stayed, aren't there organic shampoos there? It's a shame, I am going there nextweek, and I was hoping to pick up more stuff that might be available there and not here in Manila Smile

My hair right now is a disaster Sad I have spent three weeks not really taking care of my skin like it's used to and definitely not taking care of my hair. I'm going to make a hairdresser appt tomorrow and chop most of it off (I also just realised that I haven't been to the hairdresser since Nov 2005 *gasp* shame Mabsy! shame!). Once it's shorter I will start trying to get it back to a better shape.

I was actually going to post about this when I got back because my cousin and I had this long conversation about how our hair has never been the same (glossy, strong, etc) after just one hair dying incident when we were younger. I wonder why that is....

Mabsy, I really believe that in my case, why my hair will never be quite the same again is due to the water we have to use now. Up until I was in my late teens my parents had a farm and all our water was tank water which meant if was 'soft' water. I never had to even use a conditioner. Now all our town water is hard and full of 'necessary' chemcials. If you ever have the chance to wash your hair in soft water then you will know what I mean.

Yeah, you're probably right. I know there is a big difference in the water. In my case, I'm pretty sure my first perm was the death of my hair (I've lived in the city all my life).
