Hey All,
My skin sometimes get inflamed and dry and is easily sunburned. Currently my skin is normal but few days back I bought eucerin calming creme daily moisturizer from drugstore
just to ensure that I can use it to calm my skin in future as summer is coming(cause in summer i tend to develop scaly skin due to sun burn).
Today I just goggled the ingredients in it just for 'feel good factor'..to know what benefits my skin is getting out of it . Smile
But to my horror some of its ingredient Sodium Hydroxide is very harmful of skin that can in long run cause dry skin or eczema as per one site. Shock But I am wondering this creme claims to heal dry skin or eczema. Confused
I thought I should have expert opinon from this forum. Can you please suggest me if I should this creme or not?

Following is ingredient list-:
Water, Glycerin, Cetyl Palmitate, Mineral Oil, Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride, Octyldodecanol, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Colloidal Oatmeal, Dimethicone, PEG-40 Stearate, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, DMDM Hydration, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.

I was thinking that its similar to the claim that a lot of lip balm/chapstick products have drying ingredients. They are in the business of having people purchase their products. So the more dry you are the more likely it is that you will buy some more. Defeats the purpose of buying the product in the 1st place. Initially your skin/lips feel hydrated and good...then it drys out and you need to reapply.

I do some work for Eucerin and I wanted to let you know Eucerin was actually started by dermatologists as opposed to a big pharmaceutical company. This is why they have such a good relationship with dermatologists around the country and frequently get recommended.
Either way you should consult a doctor and I hope everything turns out OK.

Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Sodium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide, Magnesium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide are used to control the pH of cosmetics and personal care products. Magnesium Hydroxide is also used as an absorbant.

It's highly alkaline so they use it to neutralize acidic ingredients.

I bought a tube of the Calming Cream a while ago. Large tube 200 ml for $9.99 in SDM. I wanted something that would moisturize well without fragrance.

For a moisturizing cream, this works well for me. I always suggest doing a patch test if in doubt.

I have had reactions to skincare products (pricy ones sometimes!) and it is not fun having an itchy rash on your face.
