What are the reasons people would use hydrocortisone cream on their face? My derm suggested I use it but she was in such a hurry she didn't really say why. Is it "healing"?
Thanks! |

Hi Shelly...
Hydrocortisone cream is generally recommended for treating skin reactions like rashes and itching. Be aware that it does have the tendency to thin the skin though, so don't use it for an extended period of time. |

It also calms down the skin and takes away redness. |

Its for skin that is itchy and red...like a rash, bug bite, or irritation. You can use it on your face for that purpose, but I don't think its healing. |

Be careful using hydrocortisone cream anywhere on your face, and never for more than two weeks at a time. It surely does thin your skin! I get red, dry patches under one of my eyes and I've used hyrdrocortisone on that area many times. Now, my skin under that eye is extremely thin, and wrinkly. Also, get the lowest concentration if you can--I think it's l/2 percent. The dermo told me it was safe to use for three weeks in a row, but three pharmacists have told me to never use it for more than 2 weeks. And I've learned they were right! |

Prolonged usage of topical steroids leads to a thinning of skin and other scary side effects. Google it. Def only to be used in emergencies. |

I have used it on my face before to help with a dry patch...but like others have said do not use this on your face on a regular basis, because it will thin facial skin! So go ahead and use it, but for short periods of time...be careful! |

For 10 yrs I used to get dryish red flaking by my nostrils and on chin...even if I moisturized the area. My sister said it was a skin fungus like dandruff but not on your scalp and that only ketoconazole cream2% would help. She gave me a tube and on the first application it went away! I couldnt believe it! I only put a tiny bit where I have the problem, twice a day.It says to use for 6 weeks or else the fungus will come back. |
