I have been looking through old threads to get information about AHA's and Retinol. I'm 40, have extremely dry skin that is sensitive to fragrances. I don't have terrible wrinkles yet but I think I need to focus on turning over/renewing my skin rather than just constantly moisturizing it.
I've used Amlactin 12% on my body for years so I thought I'd look into finding an appropriate, similar product for my face. But then I started reading about Retinol. What do they do differently? I've read you shouldn't use both so which would be better for me to use?
Thanks for any advice! |

I am currently alternating nights with Avene's Retrinal (retinoid) and ISC's Active serum (AHA) and it is working well. Retinoids smooth the surface of the skin, even tone, increase blood flow and unclog pores. They are the one topical treatment proven to regenerate collagen. AHA's are known for skin softening and improving skin thickness and fine lines. They provide a reliable mechanism for exfoliation without the potential damage that could be caused by more abrasive means. |

The instructions that came with my tube of Retinol say not to use it with AHAs. I prefer the Retinol over AHA - it does make my skin peel, however, I don't get the dryness or irritation that can occur with long term AHA use. |

I've tried both, and in my own experience, I would prefer RETINOL because it renew my skin, gives me pinkish glow....

The retinal products I was most interested in are from Avene. I was looking at Ystheal, Eluage or Retinal .025/.05/.1
Which would be best for my type of skin and problems: dry skin, sensitive to fragrance (I read Eluage is heavily fragranced), light wrinkles on the sides of my eyes and between my eyes (11's), heavier wrinkles on forehead, skin is not too saggy yet but starting to sag. |

Hi Button, I think the Retrinal would work well for you. It is emollient so it's good for dry skin. There is no fragrance. I have just been putting the Retrinal cream on every other night and not following it with any other products. I suppose if your face got too dry you could follow it up with a moisturizer over the Retrinal but I would probably wait at least an hour before doing that to let the Retrinal do its work. I started with the .1 instead of working my way up and I have not had too much of a problem with flaking or dry skin, but it does smooth out lines and make your skin clear. I'm very happy with the Retrinal. |

Button-I used Eluage for about 6 months and did not see any difference in either my hyperpigmentation or softening of my fine lines. I switched to Ystheal about 10 days ago and I really like the way it is working on both of those issues. After I have finished with this, I am planning on switching to Retrinal per Jom's recommendation. |

You can use both of them on your whole face. They are both essentially the same thing. I compared the ingredients and the only thing that is different is that the Ystheal has something called Tocopheryl Glucoside in it and the Retrinal does not have it. This may make the Ystheal more emollient than the Retrinal. I believe the Ystheal is the European version of Retrinal and Retrinal was created just for the American market. And Retrinal comes in three strengths. Also, you can use both AHA products and retinol products but not on the same night, you shouldn't layer one over the other. It's best to alternate nights and you may see more of an improvement if you use both. |

I have moved on to using Retin A, but I was pleased with Green Cream when I was using. |

I use Skin Ceuticals (pure)retinol 1.0 and Neostrata AHA/PHA product. The Neostrata said can be applied over retinol, I sometimes would apply both at the same night(retinol on T-zone only).
Retinol should need some time for the skin to accustom with. At the very beginning I even feel a bit allergic on applying retinol 0.5 once weekly. But my skin becomes more adapt to it and now I can apply 1.0% 2-3 times a week without any problem.
It's said Retinol can help pores and fine line. But I'm not sure does it work as I have many other things to apply at the same time.
But one surely is, to use Retinol, you MUST use sunscreen, and cannot be pregnant. |

I would recommend using a mild retinol ... great for your skin and gives you a lovely glow. Just be sure to wear your sunscreen!
I am a huge Green Cream fan but I have also heard good things about Ystheal, the Jan Marini products, and the Vivant Vitamin A products. |
