What do you like/dislike about these manual exfoliating methods and which do you prefer? Any other suggestions? I've noticed many of you rave about the Clarisonic and I'd love to try it but I'll be honest in saying the price makes me hesitate right now.

My problem (well, one of my skin problems) is products do not absorb very well on my skin, i.e. Emu oil just sits on my face feeling yucky yet many of you have commented on how this oil easily absorbs into you skin. I think I have sensitive, leather-like, dull skin yet when I use BHAs/AHAs daily for enlarged pores & blackheads, my skin dries out & flakes. Sad

Would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you!

I am also trying to decide what to buy. I had great results with microdermabrasion a few yrs back so I am interested in a home machine..not the kind you find in a jar...but clarisonic sure has my attention.
My life is busy right now so I wish I had more time to look it all up...maybe when my kids are grown.. Razz

I need to add some moisture to my skin care routine...would emu oil be a good way to do so.

Thanks Lou

I tried the following:

Cleansing cloths: Difficult to control
Manual plastic bristle brush: Felt too abrasive
Clarisonic: The best so far, good control, different texture brushes for customization.

I also purchased the Neutrogena at home microdermabrasion kit as well as the Dove handheld tool which I have both yet to use.. Embarassed (I know..just cant seem to stop buying stuff to try! Razz)

Put off using the neutrogena kit as there were instructions on limitations of aha use before and after its use.. could never seem to get round to doing it...

As for the dove tool, it was an impulse buy, doesnt really have good reviews, not enough incentive to start on it right now!

Have fun exfoliating! Wink

I find the clarisonic to be one of my best purchases. I iuse it once a day in the shower - keep it there until it needs charged. I use it on my decolette as well as face and neck - It helps absorption of products, therefore making them more effective.

It is pricey, but overall a good investment in your skin.

I have done them all, including professional microdermabrasion and at-home microdermabrasion scrubs. My favorite investment of what you have listed is the Clarisonic. The special sonic pulses are different than just a spinning brush, in my opinion. It is the one beauty item I do recommend to all my friends (no matter how little they are into beauty, skin care, etc.)

I have only done two professional facials. The first one last year in January and I had a microdermabrasion then with the facial. Saw the same aesthetician last month - had a facial with oxygen treatment. She said my pores, especially on my nose are a lot less congested. She had to do hardly any extractions! ** What's the difference - I've been using the Clarisonic (not even every day) since then. **

Another benefit: after using the Clarisonic, I feel products absorb better into my face. And Clarisonic helps reduce flakies. I do use a microfiber sponge on my nose to get rid of any leftover flakies (that's the area that flakes most on my dry skin - really the only place that's left after using the Clarisonic).

So, I definitely think the Clarisonic's worth the price. It's a initial investment but something you can use EVERY DAY. Not that many items you can say that about.

That being said, if you can't afford the Clarisonic, get a good microfiber cloth or sponge (I like Stan's "microdermabrasion" sponges available on Ebay). It's not the same but much cheaper. THEN ... save up for the Clarisonic!!! Laughing

Okay, you've convinced me - the Clarisonic is indeed the best investment. Thinking this warrants being at the top of my list to purchase as it'll help with any products I use.

Thanks for the ideas!

Also, the Clarisonic has a guarantee. You can return it if you don't like it - depending on where you buy it, for a differing amount of time. Check with whomever you purchase it from. And Clarisonic is pro-active, they instigated a voluntary recall on some models they found had a problem.

So, go for it! It's definitely worth the price of one or more professional microdermabrasions. And, yes, it helps with absorption of other products, etc., so it has increased value for this itself.

I had the same issue. I could not justify spending that much money on what essentially is an overpriced brush. I could however justify spending the money on a Microdermabrasion machine to be used fortnightly.

What to use for exfoliation in between treatments turned out to be the tricky question though.

I was browsing the beauty section at the department store one day and noticed the children’s electric Colgate toothbrushes. They feature the same rotating brush as the clarasonic and it is actually quite soft. The price could not be beat at $10.00AUD and surprisingly it wasn’t too small either.

Apply a thick cream cleanser, turn the brush on, and start to exfoliate any dead skin cells that have accumulated over the day.

What’s not to love? Razz

I didnt like the clarisonic I tried it twice, years apart. I find it too harsh, even with the delicate brush. I don't consider my skin really sensitive so I was surprised my skin hated it.

I do like the Shiseido cleansing brush, its very soft:
