Everyone raves about AHA's instead of manually exfoliating, but in my experience it does't matter if I use the AHA's. Any AHA does cause my skin to peel, no matter how low the percentage. Then I have to manually exfoliate (every day) just to get that dead flakey skin off. I'm not complaining that my skin doesn't look better. I'm just wondering of this is redundant and potentially harmful to my skin.
Is it just me or does anyone else have this problem?

That's interesting. I hardly ever peel from AHA's. Retin-A, yes. AHA, no. If you hate the peelies, how about trying an enzyme exfoliant like papaya, pineapple, etc. These dissolve the dead skin cells instead of causing the cells to flake off. I do use a physical exfoliant (those rough washing gloves) with my Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser (w/AHA/BHA) and don't have any problems with peelies. I have started putting oils on at night though (as a moisturizer test) so I doubt I could flake even if I wanted to. |

I use Tazorac nightly so I know how that can flake in the beginning. However, if I only use the Tazorac I don't get the peelies. It only happens if I use an AHA which my derm recommends along with the Retinoid.
The last week of so I've been using those Dove cleansing pillows at night and I really do love them. Since I've been using those it has taken care of the problem, but I was afraid it was too much.
I have tried the oils and deep moisturizers, but almost all moisturizers give me blackheads even though I have normal/dry skin. I've tried the gels too and they just aren't hydrating enough.
Regarding the enzymes....I just ordered Mario Badescu's Enzyme Revitalizing Mask, so maybe that will help. Which enzyme products do you recommend?
Sometimes I think it may be best to use a simpler routine. But I really don't want to let go of my Retinoid. Maybe discontinue everything else that is a treatment?

Which AHA do you use? Maybe it's too strong? Maybe your skin would prefer a BHA instead? Why does the doc want to use an AHA when you are already using Taz? Hmmm. I know lots of questions. If I were you, I would just stop the AHA. The Taz will increase your cell turnover and help your skin look nice and it's like a jumbo jet next to a biplane (vs. AHA's). The enzyme mask/scrub I use is Adrien Arpel's Papaya Scrub. I leave it on for a couple of minutes as a mask. Maybe other members have enzyme masks they like and can chime in, too.... |

I have been using various AHA's including MD Forte, Obagi, Paula's Choice, etc.
According to some dermatologists, using an AHA or BHA during the day will boost the effectiveness of a Retinoid used at night. Some even think using an AHA right before using a retinoid boosts penetration.
You're right, maybe I should just stop the AHA and see what happens. Initially the AHA's were really helping with my peelies and I was so much more satisfied using Taz this way. Maybe it just became too much for my skin.
I think sometimes we get into the rut of thinking we have to "beat" our skin to perfection with the harsher products, when what we really needed was something gentle.
Thanks for the advice. You just knocked some sense into me. Ouch!
