Hey everyone:)
I tried using the search to collect some info before making a post but I had problems with the search thing, so forgive me if my question is asked to often!
I'm 28 and suffer from terrible skin.
My mother is from Ireland (pale dry skin) and father is from Spain (oily, olive skin)
and I've inherited a fairly nasty case of:
very pale & VERY VERY oily skin
with EXTRA LARGE pores (to the sides of my nose under my eyes)
unrelenting black head infestation on my nose
mild discolor/bags under my eyes
slight acne
Not a pretty sounding face is it *LOL*
I'm not sure if my skin problems are a result of my heritage or that I suffer from allergies or both...(I'm allergic to just about every airborne allergen)
I often try different products, but I'm just a guy and am always a little shy asking others about this stuff, so thank goodness for this forum!
I'm indoors 99% of the day (computer work) and usually get to the gym about 3-5x per week and eat a balanced diet (which I track).
My current routine which I do twice per day (AM/PM) is:
cetaphil facial cleaner or glycerin bar soap to clean my face
followed by ProActive Toner,
and then an oil free moisturizer (Neutrogena Visibly Firm w/ SPF 20 or ProActive Moisturize w/ SPF 15)
at nights I usually go with the Neutrogena Deep Pore Treatment instead of the moisturizer.
At any rate these chemcials that I've been using for the past 6-7 weeks dont seem to be doing much. My skin is slightly less oily but the results don't reflect the toil.
Should I consider going to a dermatologist? or getting some type of facial so someone with a little more insight (than I have) could give me guidance?
I always hear people discussing the benefits of Retin-A and the Proactiv line of products but never know if they are right for me or which to buy...
What routine/products would you advise? |

Based on what you have described, I will suggest the following skincare to help decongest the skin & control oil-production. The following are gentle though effective skincare products for you to consider:
Cleanse
Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser, MD Formulations Cleanser for Oily/Problem-Prone Skin, Dr. Renaud Japanese Camphor Cleansing Milk, or Sothys Purifying Beauty Milk.
Tone
Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner, Dr. Renaud Japanese Camphor Lotion, or Sothys Purifying Lotion.
Treatment
Daytime: Skinceuticals/Primacy C+AHA Serum followed by Hydrating B-5 Gel and Phyto +. Even oily/acne-prone skin needs moisture, so of the following should be worn over-top of the treatments: Sothys Active Cream, Dermalogica Oil-Control Lotion, or Dr. Renaud Intervention Fluid-Base.
Evening: Hydra B-5 Gel and Phyto +, followed by your moisturizer and MD Formulations Vit-A-Plus Clearing Complex.
Mask
Peter Thomas Roth Theraputic Sulfur Mask, and Sothys Desquacrem for deep cleansing. |

great thanks for the help!
I've done a little checkin up on prices and that stuff is all a pretty penny!
are there any products on that list that you'd consider a "must have"?
In particular I'm most interested in reducing the size of my pores. |

Sometimes if you can find a salon locally that stocks these products they will give you some advice on which products would be the most suitable for your skin and may even hand out free samples.
I visited a salon that stocked Dermalogica and I had a free 'Face Mapping' session where they had a good look at my skin under a large magnifying glass ( ) and then gave me some skincare tips and a bagful of Dermalogica samples that they thought would suit my skin type. This way I could try out some of their products without having to spend any money. Nothing worse than paying a lot for a product only to find it doesn't work for your skin.
Perhaps some of the other brands you want to try may offer samples. |

Thanks for the advice toe!
but wouldn't it take a lot of samples to see a difference?
I always assume it would take 3-6 weeks for the facial skin to renew, and thus would take about that much time to determine if a product is beneficial? I wouldn't think that a 2-3 day supply would be adequate to appreciate anything? |

You're right there. However, if your skin is going to react to a product you'd probably find out within a couple of days.
I found that the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel really dried my skin out. Didn't take more than 3 days for me to realise that it wasn't suitable for my skin.
It's just a way for you to sample some of the products to decide whether they feel right for your skin or not.
I would have been kicking myself if I'd bought a full size Special Cleansing Gel only to find it was going to dry my skin! |

how does one use these masks?
are they used in place of a daily cleanser?
do i just "wash" my face with them like a normal cleanser? when I hear mask I assume they need to be left on for a period of time?
I've been doing this routine for the last 3 weeks:
MD Formulations Cleanser for Oily/Problem-Prone Skin
Sothys Purifying Lotion
MD Formulations Vit-A-Plus
and
(AM)Dr. Renaud Intervention Fluid-Base
(PM)Neutrogena Copper moisturizer
my skin has a nicer color and looks healthier- oily skin has been reduced which is nice.
The pores and blackheads have been reduced VERY slightly if at all. |

The mask you probably would use a couple of times a week, depending on your need. Normally they are used after cleansing and they are left on your face for 5-15 minutes, again deepending on type of mask and need. Sometimes you only need to use a mask on a part of your face, like the t-zone, and thats fine. Some cleansing mask may be too drying to use all over.
I prefer to use my mask in the evening after a shower, so my skin is soft and warm. I do think most mask works better this way.
As a low price alternative you could try the Montagne Jeuness line of mask. You will find a review on the other forum. Love the red self-heating sauna mask! |
