Hi all! Ok, so as most of you know, my husband and I are moving at the end of the month, so during these last couple weeks we're making pretty much a whirlwind effort to see all of our friends in the area one last time. Some very dear friends who just had a new baby one month ago are having us over for dinner tomorrow and I would like to bring some goodies with me, both to show my appreciation for them having me over and to take a little pressure off of the new mom who is busy enough with her new arrival and shouldn't have to worry about fixing an elaborate meal for us.
The problem is that the new mom is nursing and her baby has a lot of food allergies, including dairy and wheat, so she's really on a restricted diet. This makes it hard because it nixes a lot of the stuff I would usually bring such as appetizers, desserts, etc. Also, I typically like to show up to people's houses with some kind of nice drink (microbrewed iced tea, jasmine tea, Japanese mugicha, etc), but mugicha is out because of the wheat, and tea, wine, etc are out because they are Mormon. So, any ideas? One thing I thought of was bringing chips and guacamole. Doesn't anyone know if there is wheat in corn chips, or should I be OK there? I was also thinking about getting some nice fresh fruits, maybe even some flavored water. Anyone else have any thoughts? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

Hi'a Lizzy Tish, hope all is going well and your not too stressed with the big move comin'.
I suggest a nice big fresh fruit salad... You can even fancy it up, by making it in a watermelon shell.. YUMMO! And a couple of cheeses to go with it, would be great too.
It might be a good idea to forget the chips, as so many are made with wheat flour these days. And if Mom is breast feeding, the little one might not be up for guacamole just yet..
Just keep in mind, whatever Mama eats, baby eats...
Cheers and Bon Apetite' |

Kassy's suggestion of a fruit salad is great (probably skip the cheeses though with dairy allergies). I have an intolerance to both wheat/gluten and dairy and fruit salad is always a safe and yummy option.
As for appetizers most corn chips are wheat free. Just make sure to check the ingredients and get the plain salted ones as the flavoured ones often have dairy in them. If you make the guacomole yourself it should be fine as well. Another alternative is hommus dip with rice crackers, carrot and celery sticks etc. Probably easiest to stick to something really simple.
I'm sure your friend will be delighted that you've made an effort to bring something that she can eat. |

Some homemade lemonade might be lovely at this time of year (and no wheat or dairy, just lemon juice, sugar and ice water).
A greek salad without the feta is good as well if you are looking for other salads. I usually put a bit of fresh dill in with the cucumbers, tomatoes, olive oil and a splash of lemon juice.
I have also taken roast chicken over to new mom's so they don't have to cook supper that day ... its an easy one dish meal that doesn't involve dairy or wheat! |

Lemonade or limeaide is good or a nice herbal iced tea. There are some new tea recommendations on the tea thread here:

I like the new Twinings Herbal Unwind: African Honeybush, Mandarin & Orange iced (quite yummy! and refreshing):

I picked up a new one in their herbal line but haven't tried it yet - I'm pretty sure I will love it:
Herbal Lemon with Chinese Ginger
Beware that the blackcurrent one with vanilla has ginseng in it (I don't like the taste of ginseng - feel it overpowers the other flavors).
This is a link to ones Twinings recommends iced:
