Hi everyone!! Just a little background info...I am 26 and over the years have really noticed a great reduction in the amount of hair I have. I don't have any bald spots or anything but want to take preventative measures and stop it before it gets to that point. Does anyone know of things I can use or take to help my hair grow thicker or at least prevent it from getting any thinner??
Thanks! |

Hello.
I think it's important to focus on a healthy diet and treat the problem from within. You could consider to take supplements of Brewer's Yeast that are rich in B vitamins, green foods like spirulina and barley grass, MSM or a vitamin complex designed for hair, nails and skin. |

I agree with the healthy diet suggestion. Also make sure you're not doing anything to hurt yout hair. This includes: coloring, perming, using a straightening or curling iron, and anything more than minimal blow drying.
This is not a one size fits all solution, but my hair got a lot healthier when I minimized shampooing. It's shedding a lot less, I have almost no split ends/breakage, and I'm currently growing out my hair so it's longer than it's ever been. I don't shampoo regularly, maybe once every other month. I wash with conditioner- I use Suave naturals conditioner and I add honey to it and a little apple cider vinegar. I wash with my hair with my conditioner mix about every other day. |

Someone on another board had mentioned that she was using Avalon Biotin shampoo and conditioner and her hair stopped shedding. It isn't that expensive and is worth a try. |

Theres a scalp colorant called CRC that is just the greatest. I use it on my hair part and around the hairline. It blends very well and theres a very good variety of shades; if you color the scalp it will give the illusion of more hair and is undetectable. Doa search on google and see what comes up. |

Exercising is the key because it increases blood circulation. Poor circulation can cause the hair to fall out. In addition, eating vitamin enriched foods can help as well. I also noticed that rubbing certain oils into the hair can help prevent hair loss. Some oils are: mustard oil and coconut oil. Rub it into your hair, don't drench it. Leave it in the hair for an hour or 2 and then wash it off. Shampoos can be problematic too because it can cause buildup. Try using some natural based shampoos. Stay away from shampoos that have harmful detergents in them. Essential Day Spa has some shampoos in the natural category. You can also find them at certain Grocery stores like Loblaws and even Walmart. Currently, I'm using Natures Gate. Seems to work well. |

Oh and I exercise at least 4 times a week, so I am hoping that that is not the problem because I don't know if I have time for more lol. |

sweetp,
you may want to have a physical since sometimes changes in thryoid function and/or iron stores (Ferritin) can cause thinning hair. |

If I may, I would like to offer a comment on an 'unanticipated yet welcomed' benefit of a product I began taking. I don't have thinning hair to be fair - under periods of stress it does shed faster than normal however.
I started using a product called Bio-Sil (from Lorna Vanderhaeghe, liquid drops form) as in a presentation she gave noting the products benefits for bone density/osteoporosis, she relayed some positive anecdotal comments some dentists had given her re: gum health. I eat healthily and take great care of my teeth, but wore braces and have some heriditary factors to contend with!
I started using it for the oral health reason. After a few months I noticed that along with my gums improving tremendously, my hair wasn't shedding like normal (same stress levels!). Lorna indicated in the presentation that her hair has also seen an improvement since using it. I continue to take a low dose (about 4 drops daily) to maintain the improvement in gum health I have experienced.
There are other companies that make bio-sil, you wouldn't have to necessarily purchase Lorna's if you didn't want to. |

wow!! thanks everyone...I will look into this wealth of new info I have. The biosil definitely sounds interesting - how many drops did you start with before you reduced to 4? and how long before you saw an improvement? |

BioSil is definitely an interesting supplement. It has been proven in clinical studies to improve hair and skin quality. I have just ordered Natrol BioSil (formerly known as Jarrow Formulas BioSil), which contains choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (silicon).
Jarrow Formulas BioSil has been shown to improve hair quality in the study I have quoted from below.
Quote:
An international research team conducted a 9 month, randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study using 48 healthy Caucasian women with fine hair and an average age of 43.3 years. Half the women supplemented their regular diet with 10 mg of silicon in the form of choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid, while the other half received a placebo. The BioSil group experienced a significant improvement over the placebo group including:
- Increased cross sectional area of hair fibers: 7.8 per cent increase average (twice the placebo group)
- Increased diameter of hair fibers: 3.8 per cent increase average (1.7 per cent for the placebo group)
- Hair tensile strength and elasticity decreased significantly in the placebo group (-10.8 per cent) whereas in the BioSil group no significant change was observed.

Another independent study showed that BioSil helps restoring elastin and suppleness to sun-damaged skin.
Quote:
Scientists at the Free University of Brussels recently conducted a 20-week double-blind study using 50 women ages 40 to 65 who had clear signs of sun damaged or prematurely aging skin. Half received 10 mg of BioSil, while the other half received a placebo. The BioSil group experienced a significant improvement over the placebo group including:
- Shallower micro wrinkles: Up to 30 per cent better than placebo
- Improved skin elasticity: 55 per cent better than placebo.
Significant reduction of brittleness in hair and nails.

Hormonal changes also can contribute to hair loss. Menopause, stopping OCPs.
Stress
Anesthesia.
Just about anything, it seems!!
Good luck! |

I also recommend the Natrol Biosil (formerly Jarrow formula). I started taking Biosil and MSM for my skin, but saw much faster results in my hair and nails. In a matter of weeks, I saw nails and hair growing significantly faster and stronger.
I've also had bouts of hair shedding, during times of stress. |
