I have been using the FA+E+C serum nightly. But 2 nights ago, I had a huge reaction to it! It stung like hell and I broke out in ezcema. I'm not sure if that's the cause of it or the SAS Bright-I cream. Maybe I should add less stuff in there.

funkydory: OUCH! That sounds very painful Sad

It may be something as simple as just using too much too close together. I am not an expert but I would suggest a skin rest to calm it down. My son uses 100% Shea butter and it seems to calm down his outbreaks.

I hope your skin improves quickly.

Thanks for the tip on Shea Butter. Seems like it works for many. I might get that on my next shopping spree.

I applied some rosehip seed oil and it has calmed down a lot but still has flaky and hard skin around it. =( So I'm staying clear of everything now except for my Mario Badescu HA lotion

Darn! skinactives is just grossly overpriced (notice how it is 4X the price of bulkactives Rolling Eyes), moreover I just find the people at skinactives to be somewhat dodgey.

Coconut: I actually went to the SkinActives offices in Gilbert, AZ to pick up my order and had a wonderful experience, pleasant and friendly. Jonatan answered all my questions. I have not had any problems with them answering my email questions.

I agree that SAS is overpriced. But they do have really good customer service and they have tonnes of actives. I like buying from SAS because of the convinience and also international shipping is only $10!!

I bought my FA from Bulkactives forever ago and you get so much that I haven't had to look for it again. I did a pretty exhaustive search yesterday and bulkactives and Skinactives are the only places that I could find as a source of ferulic acid.
That seems really strange to me Confused Confused
I think I might email a couple of the other suppliers I use and see why they don't carry it. I will let you know what I find out.

ps. I also try to buy from other suppliers than Skinactives - a little to condescending for my taste

You could try PSF as they offer FA as an antioxidant booster:

The LAA from Lotioncrafters dissolved instantly in water. The Ferulic from SkinActives dissolved just as quickly in the vodka.

I was stirring and stirring the LAA and water in the shot glass thinking that is wasn't dissolving because I could see white on the bottom of the glass. Upon closer inspection it was the remainder of the price sticker that didn't get all the way peeled off on the bottom side of the glass Embarassed

FWIW...I don't like putting alcohol or glycerin on my skin, and vitamin e oil (from a capsule) breaks me out, so I don't use any of those in my Ferulic/L-AA serum. Ferulic acid dissolves quite nicely in rice bran oil, avocado oil or ELS (Every Lipid Serum from SAS), so I imagine it would dissolve in almost any oil. Works like a charm for me. You just have to give it a little time.

I found that I have a MAP that I got from SAS a couple of years ago. It was just sitting there on a counter. Does anyone know if it's still good? It still looks white powdery. I put it in the fridge. The counter is located in a family room in the back part of the house, which doesn't get hot.

If this is still good, can I add it to the Vit C powder I got from TJs and seamolient + distilled water?

I want to buy ferulic acid but from what I hear the one from SAS doesn't seem very good. I also have Vit E capsules I can add to the mix as well as pure glucosamine and niacinamide powder.

Would this be a crazy mix?

Bira.... Whatever posts you write are amazing, it's like you are me or something. We have the same issues!

Anyway, good luck with your serum. I AM LOVING THE TJ's Vit C crystals!
Im still waiting for my SKB to get started on my serum!

I made the serum for the first time about a week ago and I love it. It was the Version A and next time I'll make the Version B only I need to order the Hyaluronic Serum. I have Hyaluronic Acid but not the serum. When Kassy gets back I'll ask if I can substitute one for the other or if I need to add anything additional.

That's so funny! Laughing You and I must be shopping at the same places. Laughing

Have you started using the TJs Vit C crystals in your C serum yet? Tonight is my first time trying it. It's rather potent as it stung my face, and I had to wash it off right away because I was afraid I'd get red from it.

Bombshellbella...I think you've got a good serum there!

Dr. Daniel Yarosh (Remergent) says this about aloe in "The New Science of Perfect Skin": "Among the new topical ingredients that boost immune function are compounds called oligosaccharides, which are long chains of sugars linked together. Aloe vera gel is a well-known soothing and calming agent, and a preparation of its purified oligosaccharide sugars, called Aloeride, is known to stimulate the immune system."

Hiya!

Okie Dokie!
After being a Skin Ceuticals C/E + FA for awhile...I am on to doing this myself. I am quite savvy/ smart and very much a DIY'er..I love this site! Woo Hoo! Very Happy
I have modeled for 15 yrs, etc...but they had us ruin our skin in the sun, only to put makeup on it and send us to BS facialists in Bev Hills and NYC for tons of money. All a joke, and I knew while I went through it, but the $ was too good..lol
I am 31,and have used retin-a for about 10 yrs,on and off,also various c-serums, etc.
It has been hard b/c I model a lot of beach-wear and lingerie and the dark tan goes along way, many times we shoot in Bali or Mexico, etc...
So..I'd get my body dark and keep a pale face..lol..Everyone had thought I'm nuts but in the last 2 yrs all models are doing the same! Plus they airbrush tan us..but prefer real tan on body,mostly...(sigh) Mad
I just let makeup gals do the match-up,or myself, if I am going out! I get laughs from family and friends, and my guy..but who cares! My mom was a beach bunny and in the sun all the time. We both have blonde hair and light eyes.My parents were huge 1970's health freaks..lol
She started retin-a 25 yrs ago, and never has had botox and her skin is amazing. She also started with Cellex-c from Canada, when it was brand-new.. when I was a little girl in the early-mid eighties.
She still basks in the sun and gets dark, but shields her face, at 63...( however, you are also talking about a woman who burns off her handspots with matches and all. She is old-school russian..and has amazing skin! Adds to my confusions! LOL)

I SO love this forum! I have faithfully used obagi a few times, usually in winter months, used all kinds of blocks, both chemical and physical, hydroquinone and Prolight from Rita, derma-rolled, and some 302, Skin Ceuticals, etc etc..

I am modeling again..and yes, it's weird, they think I am 22..lol
That is great,I guess..but it is mostly prob genes and vitamins and health, with a lot of retin-a and c-serums thrown in. I have never relied on Dr's, as many of them are just trying to make $ and reiterating what you all here know, but the other masses don't! YEP!

Which all leads to: I am mostly a DIY'er, esp with my almost-medical background...(HEEHEE...j/k Laughing )
I digress....
Bethany and Dr Kassy have had invaluable info on here,as so many others have! I am so lucky if I get to squeeze in a few days to lurk on EDS! I have helped many friends, too, with the info from this site! Or just sent them this way!

OKAY!
So...
I am going to embark on my 1st homemade c/e plus ferulic acid concoction,as I am tired of buying it for sooo much and then, who knows if it is good at all? Given the continuously off-color! ?? Confused GRRR
Do you all recommend this as a good serum to start with for someone who usesSkinCeuticals normally??
I am somewhat new to mixing, but a pro at peels, etc...

15% C, E + Ferulic Acid Serum, 1oz

1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid
1/4 tsp Ferulic Acid
1/3 cc/ml (.3) of Vitamin E Oil
1/3 cc/ml (.3) of Hyaluronic Acid
1 tsp SKB
1 tsp vodka
3 1/2 tsp H2O

Can I skip the Hyaluronic acid?
Don't need it for moisturizing, and have separately that I can add.

Can I get these all at Skin Actives or the C-from Bulk Actives? (more finely milled there, right?)
What about adding another version of C to this? Like the other recipes I have seen on here
( Different versions of C's :like the THA? (SP? )etc..the stuff that is less degradeable and in 302 products, etc?) Is that really necessary?

Please advise.
I am planning to buy bulk and then mix every few days or so. I would like to use on the whole body, so I will probably dilute the body serum and make the stronger one for the face?? Smile

Where do you all get amber jars/bottles from, and other containers,so I can store in a cool dark place?
I can also use the SkinCeuticals bottles I have kept,I guess.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Very Happy xoxo

PS:sorry for so many ?s and this super-long post..Just wanna get started ASAP, as I just ran out of Skin Ceuticals! Confused

Thanks a zillion Rolling Eyes Laughing Very Happy

It may have been mentioned elsewhere, but the Skinceuticals patent for C&E is online -- go to http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm and search for number 7179841 -- gives the ingredients and basic formula for the product.

Given how much the stuff costs when you buy it ready-made, seems as though it's worth getting together the ingredients and giving it a try.

Hi Kassy,

I used up my first bottle of DIY Vit C serum (your patent pending recipe) this morning and made a new one with your latest recipe:

15% C,E + FA with HA (New 6/23/09)

1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid
3 tsp Distilled H2O
1 tsp SKB
1 tsp Glycerin
1/4 tsp Ferulic Acid
1/4 tsp vodka
1/8 tsp Vitamin E or Rosehip Oil
1/2 tsp Hyaluronic Acid Serum

I found that the Ferulic Acid couldn't be dissolved by 1/4 vodka, so I added another 3/4 of vodka to make it dissolve (just the amount listed in your previous recipe).

Was your F.A. dissolved completely in 1/4 vodka?

Just a reminder that Kassy is on vacation till mid-July.

summer 2004: When you formulated the new recipe did you use the Hyaluronic Acid Serum or the usual plain Hyaluronic Acid?

Summer, how long did you try to get the ferulic acid to dissolve? I believe I read in one of the threads that Kassy said sometimes it can take up to 60 minutes. I bought mine from Skin Actives and thankfully it dissolved within 5 - 10 minutes after mixing it around a good while. I wish had an answer to your other question but hopefully one of the more experienced skincare gurus can help you with that!
