Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), pronounced "hō-hō'-bə", is a shrub native to the Sonoran and Mojave deserts of Arizona, California, and Mexico. It is the sole species of the family Simmondsiaceae, and sometimes placed in the box family, Buxaceae. It is also known as goat nut, deer nut, pignut, wild hazel, quinine nut, coffeeberry, and gray box bush.[1]

Or maybe not...who knows1

Coffeeberry might be one of the jojoba nut's nicknames, but it's not the "coffeeberry" that got a lot of press in the cosmetic world the last couple years.

Jojoba's seed, or nut, is what gets crushed to extract jojoba oil, and the plant name Simmondsia chinensisis:

The coffeeberry used now in skin care is really from the coffee plant (bush) that we get coffee beans from (plant genus Rubiaceae: commonly cultivated coffees are robusta and arabica). The coffee beans we roast, grind and brew are the seeds inside the fruit of the plant, the coffeeberry; that outer hull gets discarded during coffee production but that fruit is what has been discovered to have "...polyphenol anti-oxidants which aids in preventing cellular damage to the skin, it also contains five of eight rare and essential sugars called monosaccharides and these properties make Coffeberry stronger and more effective than Green Tea, Pomegranates and Blueberries."

"Revaleskin can improve the skin's appearance so quickly because its primary ingredient, CoffeeBerry, is abundant in four powerful polyphenol antioxidants which help prevent and reduce superficial damage from sun exposure and free radicals," said Jim Hartman, senior vice president, US sales and marketing, Stiefel Laboratories.

"It's having four polyphenols -- chlorogenic acid, condensed proanthocyanidins, quinic acid and ferulic acid -- that makes the CoffeeBerry even more potent than such robust antioxidants as green tea, pomegranates, blueberries, vitamin C and vitamin E," he added.

The company says the new line comprises a three-step system: a day cream containing an SPF 15 to prevent damage, a nigh cream and a facial cleanser, which will retail at a premium rate of between $40 and $110 for each item.

Evidence of the line's efficacy is provided by two studies, one carried out by David McDaniel at the Institute of Anti-Aging Research in Virginia, the other carried out by Zoe Draelos from the Dermatology Consulting Service, based in North Carolina, which entailed a 12-week study using 50 female volunteers aged 30 to 50.
Both of the studies concentrated on determining the efficacy of the CoffeeBerry ingredient, which showed that the regime could help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, without allergic reactions.

"During our study, we began to see improvement in skin texture after three weeks of application," said Draelos. "After 12 weeks of use, there was a statistically significant improvement in overall skin appearance as characterized by better skin tone and increased skin brightness.
