Not sure if you guys have heard about this but basically some China-made food products have been found to have chemical contents above safety standards... or have been found to contain some industrial chemicals in them...
You can read the reports by AFP & Bloomberg here (won't post them as too long!)
http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iq9S1CntPjsk4NH_dHbqDrNdkLnw

Well I've got relatives working in China and they're telling me that what's been reported is just the tip of the iceberg and there have been other cases of "fake" foods found in China but just covered up by the officials. Not too sure how true it is but it doesn't hurt to be more careful when dealing with China-made products, especially if it's food I think since it concerns health.
No offense to Chinese everywhere!! (and I am Singaporean Chinese myself btw haha) |

Yup, what's going on in China is exactly what happened in the US before that Food and Drug Administration got started and implemented a rigorous enforcement period. That's how an unregulated free market works--companies realize that they can make huge short-term profits by cutting corners and adulterating products with cheap additives. Unless and until the Chinese get serious about government oversight, we'll see more scandals like the pet food and baby milk ones. |

What a shame. I hope they get this under control for the safety of the Chinese people, not to mention everyone they export to. I haven't seen very many food products from China here, although I know there are ingredients from China used in a lot of foods we buy.
We've had some toys recalled and I had my kids tested for lead exposure. Honestly it's hard to find toys that are made anywhere else!
I'm signed up for CPSC email alerts and I get them at least every other day for children's items. You can sign up for alerts in other categories as well. |

I have to admit I'm VERY leery of anything that's from China. Saving a little bit of $ in the short term isn't worth the long term $$$ costs to me. |

I agree, it is very hard to avoid Chinese sourced products and ingredients. Food wise I try to buy only fresh products - nothing that has been bottled (even something as harmless as the name brand Ketchup - while using tomatoes from North American, does use "additives" from China and the other countries that China is hiding behind as country of origin. With clothes, it is especially frightening to see $1,000 shoes (not that I am buying them) but out of curiousity I have been looking on shoe bottoms and they are made in China. I am at the point that when I travel and make a list of what is packed in my suitcase thanks to the liberation of my suitcase at Pearson, I am listing country of origin of my clothes if made anywhere in "euroland" or Canada. I buy a lot of things at a consignment shop and if someone comes in with a classic item that has been hanging for a few years in a closet, there is a good chance it was made in Germany, France or Italy - which is a good thing. |

Head-ups! Apparently veggies from China might not be too safe as well.
Read in the Japan Times that they have found high concentrations of chemicals in peas (or some other beans)...
Sigh, I wonder if any other products will "come to light" as well |

Oh God. I buy frozen Bird's eye vegetables most of the time and I believe they're all grown in Australia.
I read food labels and sometimes it's so frustrating because they give you the plant where the food is packaged, but no information about where it was made or grown, not to mention where all of the ingredients come from. So that involves doing research online, which you can't do while shopping, unless you want to spend 4 hours with your laptop in the grocery store googling every product you want to buy. It's just SO frustrating. |

I noticed a brand of Mineral Makeup that was made in China. I have a question. Does anyone know if there could be additives that are dangerous? For example, Lead? It wasn't a brand sold here. Are other mineral makeups made in China? |

The worst thing for me is that they do not disclose in sea food shops where the fish is from.
I have seen recently a show on TV here in Australia which shows fish farms in Vietnam and some other country and how contaminated the water is where they grow. It is quite scary.
I think they have started to write where each fish is from now in the big supermarkets thank God. |

we are very careful where we buy stuff from too.
In Japan there have been at least 3 different incidents of people being poisoned with insectides in frozen food products made in China and there has been a lot of government cover ups.
I am sorry to say, but if any product I go to buy says made in China it goes back on the shelf. Japan, Europe, USA or Aussie made is pretty much all we buy and ia m happy to pay a premium for it.
Seafood is a HUGE problem... even stuff caught in Japan with mercury and toxin problems. I haev also heard horror stories of prawns from Indonesia.
I buy Thai fresh-water farmed green prawns for my cats from Costco (Kirkland brand).. if it was any other brand I might think twice, but (perhaps I am foolish) I trust Costco to use reputable producers. |

So what's the name of the mineral makeup that's made in China? Or sometimes it says it's made in whatever but the ingredients might be coming from China! geez.... |
