Hey all,

I've just started taking 2 x 1000 mg of MSM daily. I had headaches for a few days, but they've subsided. I'm thinking of upping my dose, but have no idea what the optimum dose for helping the skin/building collagen would be. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jamie

I started on half a teaspoon, but it did nothing for me.

I then found this dosage guide - http://www.planetmsm.co.uk/html/msm_dosage.html

and I have upped my dosage to 1tsp (6000g). Apparently, the heavier you are the more you need.

There is no daily value amount from FDA . But you can find some paper:

http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/DSH/msm.html

A single oral dose of MSM is usually not effective. . . . Therefore, the MSM is usually administered in successive spaced dosages, either periodically throughout the day or on successive days, or both, until such amelioration occurs, e.g., for 2 to 21 days or even longer. The amount of MSM in each dose usually is not critical, particularly when several successive doses are administered, because the ingested MSM accumulates in the body tissues and fluids, i.e., reaches an effective titre. Individual doses of as low as 50 mg. are sometimes effective and doses as high as 1,500 mg or more are well tolerated. The usual individual dose is about 100-1,000 mg., preferably 250-500 mg. Total daily dosages of 100-5,000 mg, preferably 250-2,000 mg, more preferably 500-1,500 mg, are usually employed. The effective dosage depends to some extent on the nature and severity of symptoms manifested; the cause of those symptoms; and the MSM blood level of the patient prior to the administration of the MSM thereto [3].

I think the "optimal" dosage depends on 1. weight and 2. your individual condition and needs. If your body and diet were highly deficient in MSM to begin with, you would need more than someone else who has a better diet and more MSM in their system already.

I didn't have much in the way of side effects initially but I did notice that the dosage at which I started to see the desired effects (lightening of pigment patch on my arm) coincided with the dosage at which I started getting some hair loss. So I "think" I have reached my "optimal" dosage at this stage. This will vary greatly for the individual person and also depending on what is the nature of the condition they are wanted to improve with the MSM.

****You may need a few months on the MSM before you notice any effect as it takes some time for your body to respond to it and make the necessary internal adjustments.
