I take Yasmin birth control pills, but i know that there is a newer version of this pill called YAZ. Just wondering if they are available in Canada? I know they are available in the US. My doctor wrote me a prescription for YAZ bc pills, however, when i went to the pharmacy they told me that YAZ is not available in Canada yet. But my friend just bought YAZ bc pills from canada, so i am confused

Hi BCgirl,

I take Yasmin BC and I recently wanted to switch to Yaz so that time of the month would be shorter and less crampy. I spoke with my Gyno about this and she said that my private insurance carrier doesn't cover Yaz. I get my prescriptions in three month doses, so she gave me four boxes of the regular Yasmin pills and I take them the same way I always have but I take 24 pills a month instead of 21. Yaz is supposed to be the same dose as Yasmin - just more days on the actual pill and less on the placebo.

The way I'm taking it can be a little confusing at first; I start with a fresh pack the first day of my cycle, then those last three days I use from the fourth reserve pack. The last three days can be a little confusing but it's not bad. I've noticed that for the past few months I've used it this way, I've had less cramping and that time of month is lighter.

I do pay more for this but it's worth it and not too much more. Talk to your Gyno, she might be able to help you figure out a system that works for you!

My gyne just wrote me a script for Yasmin, to help with my acne. She said Yasmin contains a higher does of spiro than the Yaz, and I think more estrogen as well. Did your doctor tell you it was the same dose?

My doctor did tell me it was the same dose, just taken for an extended period of time (3 more days). Since I'm using it for pregnancy prevention, I'm not sure if my doctor was paying as close attention to all the ingredients. I've taken many different brands of BC and this is the only one that I haven't had negative side effects with. I've been doing the 24 day cycles for about 5 months now and haven't noticed any problems. I'm going to see if I can find any info on if there are differences in the formulations.

Yaz and Yasmin are NOT the same dosage.

They have the same amount of drospirenone but not ethinyl estradiol (yaz has less EE).

Also neither actually contains spiro, drospirenone is a derivative of spiro.
